I'm really looking forward to spending time learning about how to use Egyptian Oils Sekhem on Monday evening.

It's the first of a five week course with Annie Day who uses Sekhem for all her work from hospice work to beauty. This energy modality is akin to reiki and draws on the wisdom and energies of the ancient goddess of Medicine, Sekhmet.

We made this video a couple of weeks ago about it.

I'd love it if you joined us. Click the link in the description for more details.

I've been enjoying this this quarter's Aromatherapy Times - the journal of the International Federation of Aromatherapists. There are some great articles in it, not least one entitled "The Brain Body Connection: Neuroaromatherapy, Massage, and The Neuroscience of the Olfactory -Somatosensory Integration".

It's a terrific article. I have but one question...

What is neuroaromatherapy?

I thought I would commit my thoughts onto my blog.

How do you direct your energy when you are creating with essential oils? How do you ensure that the intention your pour into them is pure? If it is pure...what kind of pure...peacefully pure? Focused pure? Resilient pure?

What if there were a way to pour into the powers of the great Egyptian goddess Sekhmet, ruler of all disease, healing and war, to create an elixir of pure love?

I'd like to introduce you to using essential oils with Egyptian Sekhem. Fellow aromatherapist Annie Day is a reki master and Master Egyptian Sekhem healer and she speaks of the unique skills of this discipline.

Our five week course with Annie Day begins on Monday evening 6pm GMT.

I imagine that some of my aroma-friends may have been surprised at my ferocity in fighting for what I’ve believed in through this election. Most might associate me with a rather gentler disposition, since this is not the side I often choose for social media to reveal! One who knows me better however, remarked with a wink emoji, that it’s the Cancerian side the oils people know, but it really is often my Aries rising that’s running the show.
Despite that astute perception, this moon child grows weary of playing host to Eris, the goddess of strife.

This morning, as I sip my chamomile, I vacillate from being she, who agrees that commotion might be rather unsavoury behaviour for someone calling themself a healer, to feeling Artemis’ bow still weigh heavy in my hand.

I’d argue that activism is sometimes what separates “insta-priestesses” from “guard bees”. I believe that my arrows have been used justly, and I am comfortable that trying to maintain NAHA as a place of community and love is something worth fighting for. Rage does need a channel since incandescence has the power to spark fire into the crucible of change.

Rebuttal notwithstanding, my muscles are knotted, my breathing shallow and my head aches.

Further, as this portal for change looms closer, indignation is eroding my calm, undermining my centre and I sense my balance beginning to falter.

Because, of course, while novelty probably is warranted, (and could even be welcome at a push), the anxiety of what that might look like looms shadowy before me.

Perhaps this, then, should be the moment to pause and take stock.

To reflect and to remind ourselves of what we, as aromatherapists, maybe know better than most.

That strong spirits are bound by corporeal fragility, and that strong spirits also need peace.

Moments to check that mind body bridge and quieten the cortisol load.

Moments that scent-er us together, as the very community that we might inadvertently fracture if we do not proceed with care.

I am sure each of us has been sympathetic to different arguments about where NAHA should be headed next. But now, I wonder if this might not be an appropriate time to be parasympathetic together.

To rest, recharge and reset.

And so, at Raghda’s urging, I have written a short Aromythology ceremony with some lovely music and a couple of poems to help centre us as we move forward in stewardship, in serenity and scent.

It is a small informal gathering that is open to all current NAHA members.

The entrance fee is “nuffink” as Dexter would say, but there is an option to make a voluntary donation should you wish to.

Please feel turn up empty handed, but if you would like to join us, you might find it entertaining to fill your medicine pouch with some of all of the following items.

Geranium, Myrrh and Lemon oils. A little bread and honey, some pebbles or small rocks (13 if you can), and a set of headphones.

However, not of those things are mandatory and all you need to be able to attend is an open heart and a smile.

I am happy to send an unedited link for the recording for those unable to attend in person who would still like to enjoy a little aromasentience of healing.

I think of one of the most important skills you can have currently is to be able to ground someone. The nature of so much electrical connectivity, the drive to push people's attention this way then that all encourages the energy out of the body to unground them.
Terrifying to think we are being deliberately uncentred in that way, but here we are.

When I have been selecting courses to host at the Aromatic The Secret Healer's Aromatic Mystery School this year, I wanted to select things that made people feel like they can step back into their power.

This is the first of those courses.

Sekhem is a uniquely grounding and fierce expression of unconditional love. I find such truth is combining it with my essential oils and I love the idea that channelling the energies of Sekhmet, the Goddess of Medicine, Disease and Wars is exactly how healing oils would have been used all those thousands of years before.

I'd love to introduce you to a fellow Black Country gal, Annie Day of Heaven Scent Bliss, one of the funniest women I know and honestly the one seeing more clients than any therapist I have ever met.
Annie and I will focus on six oils including Blue Lotus and Myrrh, more details in the video.

If this course appeals, you can find the link to book in the comments.

Last week you may have heard the election pitch by Jade Shutes on how she plans to reallocate NAHA's research budget if she secures the post of President.

Over recent years a large portion of research spending has been spent with one company who have, in her words achieved "phenomenal" results.

She would like to see spending allocated across several providers, which seems to be a reasonable suggestion to me.

But just how easy would that be to do?
I decided to ask Dr. Jessie Cavanaugh what a clinical trial costs, where that money goes and just what NAHA and aromatherapy have secured through that spending.

What does NAHA aromatherapy research actually achieve — and what do...

Fellow NAHA members please read and share.

Dear NAHA Members,

It has come to our attention that recent social media posts and videos regarding NAHA may have caused some confusion and raised questions within our community. Our members deserve clear information directly from their Board.

• Attorney General Complaint and Resolution

In June 2026, allegations regarding NAHA’s governance were brought before the Idaho Office of Attorney General through a formal complaint by a former NAHA President. NAHA took the complaint seriously and fully cooperated with the Attorney General’s extensive audit.

On July 31, 2026, the Attorney General’s Office notified NAHA that, based on the information it received and reviewed, the complaint was closed without further action. Members who would like additional information regarding the complaint or its closure are welcome to contact the Board directly. Supporting documentation is available upon request.

• NAHA Bylaws and Governance

There has also been discussion regarding NAHA’s Bylaws. NAHA has operated under its current Bylaws for 19 years; from our 4th President’s term to present (https://naha.org/about/our-history). As with any longstanding organization, there is always opportunity to review and evolve, and the Board welcomes thoughtful suggestions from our memberships regarding any potential updates.

• Financial Stewardship and Member Resources

It is also important for us to let our members know that we take the stewardship of NAHA’s finances very seriously. Membership dollars are carefully invested in member benefits, research, sustainability initiatives, education, and the responsible day-to-day operation of the organization. Our Board has never employed an outside management company. Expenses are directly related to the growth of the organization. NAHA’s work is carried out with careful consideration of both our mission and our responsibility to our members.

Those of us who serve on the NAHA Board take all our responsibilities to the organization and its members seriously. We welcome questions and healthy discussion. At the same time, we believe our members deserve information that is complete, accurate and presented in the proper context.

Particularly during an election period, our members deserve a respectful exchange of information that allows them to make their own informed decisions.

If you have questions regarding any of these matters, we encourage you to contact us directly at [email protected]. We are very happy to respond.

With gratitude,
Your NAHA Board of Directors

This afternoon make some space to watch Raghda Abdel Maksoud talk about what she does best.

This is who has my vote for NAHA presidency.

A brilliant aromatherapist, her background is in supply chain and ensuring the very best quality essential oils.

This video is about the work she did in Albania looking at her favourite essential oil - one that I'm not a fan of at all - Sage essential oil.

A fascinating exploration into so many aspects of what it takes to make a superlative oil, with really lovely pictures of a country I knew nothing about.

If you don't yet know what Raghda is capable of, grab yourself a cup of tea, come sit a while to meet the woman whom I believe should lead us in 2027.

Incidentally if you are a member of NAHA, please ensure you are registered to vote. Election is September 1st.

Sometimes you can know someone for years and realise you perhaps never knew them at all. That's what happened when I sat down with Sharon Chapman to talk about the poetry she has written to help her to process the after effects of leaving her abusive marriage and the place scent played in her healing.
