Motherhood, particularly for a first-time mother, can be extremely demanding.

Motherhood is not like any other job, it is 24 hours a day. You may be in constant pain or suffering from lack of sleep and there is rarely enough time to recuperate from the strenuous process of giving birth. Mothers often feel disappointed that the birth was not the birth they hoped for or that they want to do everything possible for her baby but feel too exhausted, drained, and confused.

Cranio-Sacral Integration can be very beneficial in providing rest, peace and quiet, support and recuperation with an appropriately informed and experienced therapist who can provide physical re-integration, emotional support and reassurance, and practical advice.

As with all Cranio-Sacral integration, it is also helpful to work with informed awareness, understanding the specific effects of childbirth. This includes:
- addressing the shock effects of such an intense experience on the system as a whole
- settling the overstimulation of the autonomic nervous system
- emphasising the need for rest and reintegration
- addressing the effects of prolonged and intense pushing on the mother’s pelvis, abdomen, diaphragm, thorax, back, shoulders, neck, subocciput, cranium, and throughout the body
- enhancing the healing of scars, tears, and fascial strains
- addressing the effects of medication
- and above all, since this is often the most neglected area, providing emotional support and allowing emotional expression – tears, fears, anxieties, disappointment, guilt, confusion, relief, joy – acknowledging and voicing their needs.

Mothers may often find it difficult to make time for an appointment, or feel guilty about taking any time for themselves. One valuable message to convey to mothers is:
“Look after yourself for your baby’s sake because in order to look after your baby most effectively, you need to look after yourself.”

A note from me - To the wonderful people I have worked with, would you be willing to spend a couple of minutes to give some feedback if you feel cranio-sacral therapy has in some way helped you or your child? It would be much appreciated. With thanks as always, Hannah

Thank you!

The College of Medicine and Integrated Health Integrated Medical Alliance are carrying out a survey to to gather some ‘grassroots’ data – direct from clients/patients themselves - about the positive impact that complementary therapy is having on their health and wellbeing. This will then be presented to the media, government and health and care agencies, to demonstrate (among other things) how complementary therapies can be used, alongside conventional medicine, to not only help address the needs of the individual, but to also take pressure off the health and care system. Unlike some other surveys, this one is completed by the client/patient themselves. We think it’s time to let the public have their say about what helps to improve their physical, mental and emotional health. The information provided in the survey is completely anonymous and doesn’t require you to share any personal information that would make them identifiable. The survey closes on the 31st of July.

To think about whether to complete the survey, please consider the following.

As a result of having treatments with you, have your clients...

• Noticed an improvement in the problem they were seeking help for?
• Noticed other improvements in their health and wellbeing, that they weren’t expecting?
• Reduced the number of times they have needed to see their GP or other health professional?
• Reduced the amount of prescribed or over-the-counter medication they were taking?
• Reduced the amount of care they have needed from another person?
• Been able to return to work, or activities and hobbies that they previously enjoyed?
• Felt motivated to make other changes to their lifestyle, such as improving their diet or taking more exercise?
If the answer is ‘yes’ to one or more of these questions, then the College of Medicine's Integrated Medicine Alliance would like to invite you to share a short new survey with your clients.

Great visual aid and understanding.

Thank you to for this post.
Sensory integration "issues" might not make sense from the outside, but from the inside they're perfectly logical.
Any stimulus, no matter how pleasant, activates the nervous system. That activation might not be tolerable if other stressors are also causing activation.
Giving ourselves permission to take breaks and rest is important!

And why cranio-sacral therapy in children is so important in maintaining a healthy nervous system for healthy adulthood. Thank you CCST.

Emotion is clearly a major factor in creating disturbance in the ANS and consequent discomfort and disease in the body. This is not just stress, every emotion affects us - joy, love and happiness create ease, fluency and harmony in the body and coherence in the cells and molecules and subatomic particles that make up our bodies.

We all carry the scars and emotional patterns of the past. Much of this, especially the unresolved difficult emotions tends to be suppressed, hidden away under the surface, creating underlying tension and disruption. Unsuppressed emotion accumulating under the surface plays a part in causing autonomic nervous system dysfunction and disease.

From an early age, habit patterns leading to autonomic disturbance can become deeply ingrained in the system, leading to constant sympathetic stimulation, with the parasympathetic nervous system overworking in order to compensate for the excessive sympathetic stimulation, potentially leading to exhaustion of both divisions of the ANS manifesting in a vast array of possible disturbances. The results can be persistent ill-health or perhaps the sudden breakdown of the system as a whole with a wide variety of symptoms as in ME or post-viral syndrome where the system under increasing pressure has eventually given way and broken down.

Many of us allow the pressure in our lives to accumulate excessively until eventually a point is reached where the system bursts or breaks and it is not easy to return to a manageable state. Cranio-Sacral therapy can help relieve the physical and physiological patterns of discomfort and disturbance, help the patient towards a better understanding of their situation so they can develop a more harmonious interaction with their environment and integrate the whole body-mind system.

What a beautiful quote? As cranio-sacral therapists we listen to the emotions, tensions and restrictions in the body through our hands, using very light touch. Children can read, listen to a story or even play a game with their parent whilst the therapy is taking place and because it makes them feel good (the wind drops and the sand settles) they often ask to come back. Thank you CCST.

Cranio-sacral therapy helps release the physical and physiological accumulations of tension and disturbance in the body and enhances health, strength and vitality at the very core of our being.

Have you tried this wonderful therapy?

A guide to anxiety in children thanks to Child Mind Institute.

A guide to anxiety in children thanks to Child Mind Institute.

Sometimes anxiety is easy to identify — when a child is too nervous to read aloud or make a presentation in class. Other times anxiety in the classroom can look like something else entirely — an upset stomach, disruptive or angry classroom behavior, ADHD or even a learning disorder.

When kids have behavior and attention issues the first explanation that comes to mind is often ADHD. But exposure to trauma can also cause symptoms that look like ADHD. And trauma is often overlooked when kids are misdiagnosed with ADHD.
