Head to Tail Breathing isn't really something we've invented, it's a core aspect of many ancient Eastern esoteric practices.

Connecting with your breathing musculature should be a crucial part of any health or fitness training plan. From an evolutionary and neurodevelopmental perspective, breathing and respiration are the most fundamental functions of our physiology.

Practicing Head to Tail Breathing can help you build a strong foundation for your health - not just by improving respiration, blood flow, and visceral function, but also at a neuromuscular and biomechanical level, ultimately enhancing your relationship with gravity.

You have a cranial diaphragm, a pelvic diaphragm, and even the heart could be considered a diaphragm when it’s working properly. Depending who you ask, you will get a different answer for how many diaphragms the body has but one thing is for sure, the breathing motion is a global, whole body function, and when things stop moving properly, problems appear.

Here we go, my first attempt at content creation!

Speaking to the camera and articulating my thoughts clearly was definitely a challenge, but hey, progress over perfection!

In this video, I explore the important role your tongue plays in optimising your breathing and how it can improve the physical stability of your organs and interoception (the awareness of internal body sensations).

The tongue and throat complex function much like a diaphragm, and they can be activated, braced, or engaged by suctioning or pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth, a technique mentioned in many ancient traditions.

In the video, I share an alternative tongue position referenced in Daoist and Yogic practices. This position helps to wake up and engage the ventral aspects of the tongue complex, particularly the muscles beneath the lower jaw, which are often disengaged or dormant in many people.

Activating these muscles creates a positive domino effect on the rest of the body’s “midline” or breathing musculature. This allows for better bracing and spinal stabilisation, which in turn helps to relax the belly. Over time, this can help you perceive and “build” your lower Dan Tian, your main energetic centre as described in Daoism.

To practise this position, simply roll your tongue upwards and backwards, pressing the tip against the roof of your mouth and reaching as far back as feels comfortable. Simultaneously, as you start feeling the pull try to suction / brace the throat and the muscles between the lower jaw and feel how that translates downwards into a more stable torso. Be sure to maintain a slow breath while keeping your shoulders and belly relaxed.

I would like to clarify something I said in the video.

When it comes to the biochemical aspect of our breathing, it’s not entirely accurate to say that the haemoglobin in your red blood cells improves its ability to uptake oxygen when CO2 levels increase.

Instead, what actually happens is that as pH and CO2 levels in your bloodstream increase—due to holding your breath after an exhale or eating certain foods, for example—haemoglobin’s affinity for oxygen decreases. This means oxygen is unloaded into tissues more effectively.

This is called the Bohr effect, which describes how haemoglobin's oxygen-binding affinity is inversely related to both acidity and the concentration of carbon dioxide.

As for the rest of the video, it presents a strong generalisation and a highly allopathic view, which is useful for educational purposes but doesn’t directly translate to literal physiological function, as the psychological, biochemical, and biomechanical aspects of your breathing all influence one another.
