Team sports dynamic is foreign/unfamiliar to those outside it.

You spend each day training against your teammates trying to be better than them and then when a match comes around you feel comfort in the fact you’ve pushed each other to new levels and unite to be stronger as a unit

My team is my clients now - Team OBA, and as much as I push them to be better, they equally push me to learn more and figure out new strategies to keep us at our best.

The Player & The Practitioner ⚔️

I used to think and (stupidly) want the two to be separate

For whatever reason I convinced myself that I wouldn’t get the respect in football as a practitioner while still playing and as a player, teammates and manager would imagine my dedication divided

So I worked in other sports to begin with, basketball, water polo, swimming and more

One thing stuck out - I knew my stuff nutritionally but there was something about the communication that was off

Like I was speaking a foreign language and needed to mentally translate from my mother tongue in my head before I spoke

My language was, is and will be football - naturally

Over time I’ve adapted and learned loads about other sports and their quirks and habits you can only learn from the inside

But legs burning holding on to a 1-0 lead for 3 points or to keep your name in the hat for the next round - second nature man I’ve lived that

Where I used to see an obstacle I see a massive strength now

All the experience I built playing didn’t vanish when I retired

It still guides everything I do

And why I see what’s down the road earlier than most - I’ve walked it enough times

Somehow along the way toxic diet culture found its way onto the social media feeds of athletes

That meant that these individuals with much higher demands and therefore necessary intake compared to the average individual started to try and cut things out of their diet

Terrible for performance, recovery and health in these athletes

Typically athletes are under fuelling, so it makes sense that great sport nutrition ADDS to their diet to improve their fuelling

ADDS to their diet some variety to aid recovery and health

ADDS to their performance and career prospects by allowing them to train harder more often

Or you could just take away from your diet, but also from@your performance, recovery, health and career prospects

I know which makes more sense to me

Tennessee Titans head coach has just banned seed oils from the facility

Here we go again - correlation not being causation

The bigger problem is the ultra processed foods high in trans fats, repeatedly overheating and reusing the same oil and massively inadequate omega-3 intake

None of which are solved by banning seed oils

What to take from this: seed oils are fine, don’t overheat them and reuse the same oil. Cold-pressed if you’re concerned about the processing (this is tightly regulated anyway, particularly in the UK)

BIGGEST WIN - eat more omega-3. Oily fish, flaxseeds, walnuts

Don’t think you’ve got all the time in the world!

Came across this earlier today reminded me of a story from earlier in my career that showed how quickly time moves

This was May 12th 2010 and we just won the English Schools County National Championship for Greater Manchester - battered Suffolk 5-1 💪🏾

The point is the game was played at Hillsborough in front of a couple hundred people at a push

Fast forward not much over a year to August 2011 and I was back in that stadium again this time for the first game of the League One season in the squad for Rochdale v Sheffield Wednesday in front of 21000 people

That’s how quickly your career can move and the point is make sure you’re ready - opportunities will come and pass you by if you’re not prepared to grab them

You wouldn’t let your phone battery die but you’d let your fuel tank for training be near-empty

FUEL FOR THE BENCH ⚽️🚨⛽️

Will keep repeating this until the message sinks in!

A common question - what can I have on the bench to keep me ready to go and impact the game with my tank topped up

Things we want:

- quick fuel source (easy digesting carbs)
- light on stomach
- easy transportable
- enjoyable

Really we want it to be like a perfect sub - ready to go and have a big impact in a small amount of time

Season well underway and games thick and fast there’s a good chance you’ll see the bench with rotations
