What an incredible day of collaboration at Citylabs 1.0!

We were thrilled to bring together more than 100 people from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), ABHI, and our local ecosystem partners to explore the future of healthcare.

๐Ÿ’ก Key highlights from the day:
๐—ฉ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐˜€: We opened with a powerful keynote from Sohail Munshi (Joint Chief Medical Officer, MFT) on our shared strategic priorities.

We explored how MFT can help generate essential evidence for HealthTech development with Annie Yarwood PhD and the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Emergency and Acute Care, and examined a realโ€‘world adoption case study through the iTap programme with Aqsa Siddiqui.

๐Ÿค The showcase carousel
The heart of the event was our showcase carousel in the atrium. It was fantastic to see ABHI members engaging directly with MFTโ€™s specialist teams across:
- Clinical trials and real-world evidence
- Data, digital and wearables
- Innovation adoption and procurement
- Office and lab space

๐ŸŒ Strengthening the ecosystem
By connecting with industry, innovators and academic partners, we are fostering the relationships needed to meet the goals of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan.

A huge thank you to all our speakers, colleagues and attendees for making the afternoon so productive ๐Ÿ‘ .

๐ŸŽฅICYMI: Yesterday, BBC Breakfast spoke to Professor Simon Jones about a world-first stem cell gene therapy developed by researchers in Manchester.

Three-year-old Ollie Chu was treated for Hunter syndrome at Royal Manchester Childrenโ€™s Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. This rare condition causes physical, developmental and cognitive issues that can be life-threatening.

Several months on from his treatment, Ollie has now fully recovered and his parents and the Manchester researchers are excited for his future.

A former Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Yasmine Dar has become the 3,000th person in Greater Manchester to take part in a pioneering study aimed at understanding and tackling the higher rates of serious disease in South Asian people. ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿงฌ Genes & Health, supported by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) (NIHR), is being carried out in several parts of England and making major advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

๐Ÿ•Œ Opportunities to take part, in places such as mosques and community events, have been made available by teams working on the study from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), the NIHR Research Delivery Network, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust and Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ The study aims to recruit 100,000 people (16+) living in England by the end of 2028 and has already made important discoveries about the link between a personโ€™s genes and the chance of disease, including identifying genetic factors specific to South Asian people that lead to earlier type 2 diabetes onset.

๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ‘ถ A ground-breaking research study to help identify and treat rare genetic conditions in newborn babies has reached a major milestone with the recruitment of its 1,000th baby at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

The Generation Study, led by Genomics England in partnership with NHS England, offers whole genome sequencing testing for newborn babies to help identify more than 200 rare genetic conditions that can be treated early in life.

๐Ÿ’‰ Three new studies aiming to improve the effectiveness of vaccinations for severe acute respiratory infections have launched in Manchester thanks to support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Greater Manchester Commercial Research Delivery Centre (GM CRDC).

The three studies are the first to be delivered through the GM CRDC, one of 21 CRDCs across the UK, and aim to recruit patients who have been hospitalised with severe acute respiratory infections.

The studies will enable researchers to evaluate how COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus vaccines perform outside of clinical trials and across diverse populations. This will provide essential real-world evidence into the degree of protection vaccines offer against serious respiratory illness, hospitalisation, and healthcare burden.

11/08/2025

A new once-daily cystic fibrosis (CF) treatment trialled in Manchester has been approved for NHS use, following a recommendation made earlier this month by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Clinical trials delivered at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Clinical Research Facility (CRF), part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), have shown the new triple therapy Alyftrekยฎ to be at least as effective as current drug Kaftrioยฎ at improving lung function for people aged over 12 with CF caused by a specific gene (F508del) mutation.

Cystic Fibrosis is a rare genetic condition affecting more than 10,000 people in the UK. It causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive system and other organs causing a wide range of challenging symptoms. The condition is caused by reduced quantity and/or function of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein that regulates levels of sodium and chloride in cells.

Professor Alex Horsley, Consultant at the Manchester Cystic Fibrosis Centre, was the Lead Investigator. Adam Higson, 45, from Rochdale was diagnosed with CF in 1980, when he was 11-months old. He took part in the clinical trial at the NIHR Manchester CRF at Wythenshawe Hospital.
