🌿 A little taste of somewhere warmer… 🌴

There’s something about a Bird of Paradise plant that instantly transports you. The Strelitzia with its huge, architectural leaves and wonderful presence, it brings a touch of the tropics to the glasshouse, sunshine, holidays and warmer places.

On a grey Manchester day, sometimes a wander amongst the tropical plants is all you need for a little escape. 🌴

Another wonderfully weird resident of the Blossom glasshouses…

Meet Huernia variegata, a small succulent with a flower that definitely demands a closer look. Its star-shaped blooms are creamy yellow, heavily mottled and spotted with deep red-brown markings, each one looking almost hand-painted.

🪰 But those dramatic colours aren’t simply for our benefit. The flower is adapted to attract flies as pollinators, using its unusual colouring and scent to imitate something rather less glamorous decaying organic matter. A bit like rotting meat 🤢 Small, strange and incredibly intricate. Sometimes the most fascinating plants are the ones you could easily walk straight past.

🌵 Cacti are full of surprises…

Just when you think you know them, they do something unexpected!

This beautiful Gymnocalycium saglionis has a rather clever little trick. When watered, its spines temporarily change colour, becoming noticeably darker before gradually returning to their usual shade as they dry.

It’s one of those small details you might easily miss, and another reminder of just how fascinating the cactus collection in our glasshouses . The reason is surprisingly simple: the water makes the surface of the spines wet, which changes the way they reflect light, making them look much darker and more colourful. As they dry, they gradually return to their usual colour.

Nothing permanent : just water, light and a rather beautiful cactus doing something unexpected!

A huge thank you to our wonderful Blossom volunteers and fellow BCSS members who have been representing us at the RHS Bridgewater this weekend!

They’ve been sharing their incredible knowledge, experience and enthusiasm with visitors, talking about the plants and collections we care for at the Horticultural Centre in Wythenshawe Park and helping more people discover this very special place.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have volunteers who are so generous with their time and so passionate about plants, conservation and sharing their expertise with others.

Thank you for being such brilliant ambassadors for Blossom and Wythenshawe Park - we really appreciate you!

A lovely visit to Blossom!

A big thank you to the wonderful group from Age UK who joined us for a guided tour of the Horticultural Centre as part of the 100-year celebration of Wythenshawe Park. 💚

It was a pleasure to welcome such an interested and enthusiastic group, sharing some of the history, plants and hidden treasures of the glasshouses.

We were also delighted to receive a fantastic collection of handmade bird boxes, made by members of the group and kindly donated to Blossom. They will be a brilliant addition to the Horticultural Centre, helping us create more places for wildlife to shelter and nest.

Thank you for your generosity, creativity and for spending time with us. We hope you enjoyed your visit as much as we enjoyed welcoming you!

A huge thank you to the fantastic team at DynoRod for another hardworking day supporting Blossom last week!

Corporate volunteering brings such valuable energy, enthusiasm and practical support to small charities like ours. A motivated team can make an incredible difference in just one day, helping us tackle jobs and projects that would otherwise take our volunteers weeks to complete.

But it works both ways. Spending a day volunteering together offers teams the chance to step away from their usual working environment, spend time outdoors and in nature, work alongside colleagues in a completely different way and enjoy that shared sense of achievement and accomplishment at the end of the day.

We love seeing teams arrive ready to get stuck in and leave tired, smiling and able to see exactly what they have achieved!

Thank you, DynoRod, for your hard work, positivity and continued support of Blossom. It really does make a difference to our charity and the community we support.
