Good Afternoon Lovlies☺
I would like to share a very interesting lecture by Dr Aurela Daktera / Sheffield about methylation — one of the fundamental biochemical processes continuously taking place in our bodies.
The lecture also discusses the extremely important subjects of glutathione, oxidative stress, autoimmune disease and the effects that different burdens — including certain medications — can have on our protective mechanisms.
As someone who is passionate about supporting and maintaining a healthy immune system, one part of this lecture particularly caught my attention — the role of glutathione, its relationship with oxidative stress and immune function, and what may happen when the body's demand for this powerful antioxidant increases.

WHY IS GLUTATHIONE SO IMPORTANT? - Glutathione is one of the body's most important intracellular antioxidants and an essential part of our antioxidant defence system.
It helps to:
• neutralise reactive oxygen species (ROS),
• protect cells against oxidative stress,
• support mitochondrial function,
• participate in the metabolism and neutralisation of certain substances,
• maintain cellular redox balance,
• support the regulation of immune function.

WHAT HAPPENS IN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE? - Chronic inflammation involves ongoing immune activity and can be associated with increased production of reactive oxygen species.
This can create a situation such as:
CHRONIC INFLAMMATION
→ ↑ ROS
→ ↑ OXIDATIVE STRESS
→ ↑ DEMAND ON GLUTATHIONE
Disturbances in the balance between oxidants and antioxidant defence systems have been observed in a number of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory conditions. This does not mean that low glutathione causes every autoimmune disease. Autoimmunity is far more complex than that. However, the efficiency of our own antioxidant systems may influence how effectively the body copes with the oxidative burden associated with chronic inflammation.

MEDICATIONS AND GLUTATHIONE -
One of the best understood examples is -
- PARACETAMOL (ACETAMINOPHEN). A proportion of paracetamol is metabolised into the reactive compound NAPQI. The body uses glutathione to neutralise NAPQI. At recommended therapeutic doses, the body can normally manage this process effectively. However, in an overdose, NAPQI production can exceed the body's ability to neutralise it. Hepatic glutathione stores can become severely depleted, potentially resulting in liver-cell injury. It is therefore no coincidence that the antidote used for paracetamol poisoning is:
N-ACETYLCYSTEINE — NAC - NAC provides cysteine, which can be used by the body to restore glutathione.
- CODEINE - Codeine itself does not affect glutathione in the same established way as paracetamol. However, it is very commonly combined with paracetamol — for example, in co-codamol. This is why it is important to look at the complete ingredients of a medication, rather than simply its name.
- STATINS - Here the mechanism is more complex. By inhibiting the mevalonate pathway, statins can influence the production of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and have effects on mitochondrial biology and oxidative-antioxidant balance. However, this does not mean that we can simply say that all statins “destroy glutathione”. Human biochemistry is much more complex.

AND THIS TAKES US BACK TO METHYLATION - For these interconnected pathways to function effectively, the body requires appropriate substrates and cofactors. These include:
B2 • B6 • B9/FOLATE • B12 • METHIONINE • CYSTEINE • GLYCINE
The wider antioxidant system also depends on factors including:
SELENIUM • MAGNESIUM • NADPH
Producing glutathione is only part of the story. The body must also continually regenerate its reduced, active form: GSSG → GSH
This is why, when looking at chronic inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, it can be useful to consider more than a single organ or symptom.

This is not an argument for stopping prescribed medication without medical advice. Nor does it mean that simply “increasing glutathione” will cure autoimmune disease.
It is an argument for understanding our biochemistry, recognising the importance of the body's own protective mechanisms, and looking at the human body as an interconnected system rather than focusing solely on individual symptoms.

As a nurse with a science-based university education, evidence has always mattered to me.
My university research focused on the effects of cigarette smoking on arterial blood pressure, so looking at health through physiology, research and scientific evidence has been part of my professional thinking from the very beginning.
Those who also know me as a therapist will already know my views on cholesterol — and my concerns about what I believe are many cases of unnecessary or overly routine prescribing of statins without sufficiently considering the individual's wider metabolic and cardiovascular picture.
And that is exactly why a documentary like the one below is such fascinating material — for me professionally, and for you to watch, question and think about when considering your own health.
🎬 THE CHOLESTEROL CODE — THIS FILM IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST-WATCH!
The Cholesterol Code challenges the very simplistic way cholesterol is often presented:
HDL = good.
LDL = bad.
High cholesterol = dangerous and must be lowered.
The reality is considerably more complicated.
First of all, LDL and HDL aren't actually two different kinds of cholesterol. They are lipoproteins — particles involved in transporting cholesterol and other lipids around the body.
And cholesterol itself isn't a poison or waste product. It is an essential substance required for cell membranes, steroid hormone production, bile acids and normal brain and nervous-system function.
🧠 CHOLESTEROL, THE BRAIN & MENTAL HEALTH - The documentary explores the relationship between cholesterol, brain function and mental health and questions the idea that cholesterol should simply be regarded as something harmful that needs to be pushed as low as possible.
🍬 DIABETES, INSULIN & METABOLIC HEALTH-
Another major part of the film concerns blood glucose, insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction. Instead of concentrating solely on LDL, it encourages us to consider the whole metabolic picture.
And this is where LOW-CARB and KETOGENIC diets become particularly interesting. 🥩🥚🥑
Reducing carbohydrate intake can profoundly change the way the body obtains and transports energy.
For many people, carbohydrate restriction can be associated with:
⬇️ lower triglycerides
⬆️ higher HDL
⬇️ improved blood glucose control
⬇️ improved insulin resistance
🔥 greater reliance on fat as an energy source
But something particularly fascinating can happen in certain people. Their triglycerides become very low, HDL becomes high and other metabolic markers may look excellent… while their LDL rises dramatically — sometimes to levels that would traditionally cause considerable concern. This phenomenon has attracted particular interest in people described as Lean Mass Hyper-Responders (LMHR).

DOES EXTREMELY HIGH LDL AUTOMATICALLY MEAN CLOGGED ARTERIES?
This is one of the most thought-provoking questions raised in the documentary. Should a metabolically healthy, active person with very high LDL, low triglycerides, high HDL and good glucose control automatically be considered to have exactly the same cardiovascular risk as someone with the same LDL who also has diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertension, smoking exposure and high triglycerides?
And this brings us to another fascinating subject discussed in the film:
CAC — CORONARY ARTERY CALCIUM - This is NOT the calcium level measured in your blood.
A CAC score is obtained from a specialised CT scan that detects calcified plaque within the coronary arteries. CAC = 0 means that no calcified coronary plaque was detected at the time of the scan. The documentary discusses people with remarkably high LDL who nevertheless show little or no detectable coronary calcification and asks what this might tell us about cardiovascular risk.
And this is why assessing what is actually happening within the arteries can potentially provide information that a standard cholesterol result alone simply cannot give us. There is, however, an important distinction: CAC = 0 does not prove that extremely high LDL is harmless. CAC identifies calcified plaque but does not exclude all non-calcified plaque, and a zero result today cannot guarantee what someone's arteries will look like decades from now. So perhaps one of the most important messages I took from this documentary isn't:
❌ “LDL doesn't matter.”
It is:
👉 DON'T LOOK AT LDL IN ISOLATION.
Look at the bigger picture:
🩸 LDL
🩸 HDL
🩸 Triglycerides
🩸 ApoB
🩸 Blood glucose and insulin resistance
🩸 Blood pressure
🩸 Inflammatory and other cardiovascular risk factors
🚭 Smoking
🧬 Family history
❤️ And, where clinically appropriate, direct assessment of coronary atherosclerosis such as CAC.
Perhaps we have made cholesterol too simple by reducing an incredibly complex biological system to “good cholesterol” versus “bad cholesterol.” Not every hypothesis or interpretation presented in The Cholesterol Code is established scientific consensus. Research — particularly concerning people with extremely high LDL while metabolically healthy on low-carb diets — continues.
And as someone who values science, that is precisely what makes this documentary so interesting to me.
Science isn't about being afraid to question an established idea. It's about asking questions, examining evidence, testing hypotheses and being prepared to change our understanding when better evidence emerges.

Whether you agree with everything presented or not, watch it, think about it, investigate further and ask questions.
For anyone interested in cholesterol, cardiovascular health, diabetes, insulin resistance, low-carb/keto nutrition, metabolism, brain function or mental health, this is fascinating material for further thought.

💧 IV INFUSIONS IN ONCOLOGY — WHAT CAN THEY REALISTICALLY SUPPORT?
Cancer can affect much more than the area where the disease develops. Patients may experience fatigue, weakness, nausea, loss of appetite, pain, reduced physical capacity and slower recovery — both because of the illness itself and as a consequence of treatment.
Appropriately selected supportive care may help improve everyday functioning and quality of life during this demanding period.
However, there is no single “cancer IV drip.”
Vitamin C, glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), curcumin, selenium, DCA, DMSO and Solcoseryl have very different mechanisms, purposes and safety considerations.
That is why the first question should not be:
“Which IV infusion should I have?” Instead, we should ask:
✔️ What specific problem are we trying to address?
✔️ What improvement are we expecting?
✔️ How will we assess whether it is helping?
✔️ What do the current blood results show?
✔️ Is the timing appropriate in relation to chemotherapy or radiotherapy?
💧 WHY IV?
Intravenous administration bypasses the digestive system and absorption barriers. This can produce higher and more predictable blood concentrations than oral supplementation. But higher concentrations also mean that appropriate assessment, blood tests, correct dosing and monitoring become even more important.
🍊 HIGH-DOSE IV VITAMIN C
At lower concentrations, vitamin C primarily acts as an antioxidant.
At the high concentrations achievable intravenously, its behaviour can change and it may produce pro-oxidant effects, including the generation of reactive oxygen species that are being investigated for their potential effects within the tumour environment.
From a supportive-care perspective, IV vitamin C has also been investigated for its potential effects on:
• fatigue and energy
• physical and mental wellbeing
• appetite
• nausea and vomiting
• pain and quality of life
Before high-dose IV vitamin C, kidney function, hydration, G6PD status, anaemia and iron metabolism should be considered.
🛡️ GLUTATHIONE
Glutathione is one of the body’s major natural antioxidants. It helps neutralise free radicals and toxic metabolites and plays an important role in liver and cellular antioxidant systems. In oncology supportive care, it has been investigated particularly for its potential role in protecting healthy tissues and reducing some treatment-related toxicities, including neurotoxicity. Timing in relation to chemotherapy is extremely important and should always be discussed with the treating oncology team.
⚡ ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID — ALA
ALA is involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism and antioxidant defence. It can also help regenerate other antioxidants, including:
• vitamin C
• vitamin E
• glutathione
• coenzyme Q10
Potential supportive goals include energy metabolism, oxidative-stress management, liver support and neuropathic symptoms.
When ALA and high-dose vitamin C are used within the same protocol, their sequence and timing require careful consideration.
🌿 CURCUMIN
Curcumin is well known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Research has also examined its effects on biological pathways associated with:
• inflammation
• apoptosis
• angiogenesis
• cell-cycle regulation
• tumour invasion and metastasis
Oral curcumin has relatively poor bioavailability, which is one reason alternative delivery methods have been investigated.
Intravenous curcumin remains a specialised and non-standard approach.
🧬 SELENIUM
Selenium is required for several important antioxidant enzymes and contributes to:
• normal immune function
• thyroid function
• antioxidant defence
• cellular protection
It has also been investigated during chemotherapy and radiotherapy for its potential role in treatment tolerance, recovery and protection of mucous membranes. Selenium should not simply be added because someone wants to “boost the body.” There should be a reason for giving it.
🧫 DCA — DICHLOROACETATE
DCA affects cellular energy metabolism and mitochondrial pathways. It has attracted research interest because cancer cells frequently have altered energy metabolism. Proposed mechanisms include effects on:
• mitochondrial metabolism
• apoptosis
• tumour metabolism
• angiogenesis
• immune responses
⚠️ DCA remains experimental in oncology. Neuropathy is an important concern, so symptoms such as tingling, tremor, numbness or altered sensation require particular attention. Liver function, gastrointestinal symptoms and electrolytes may also require monitoring.
🫧 IV HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
Intravenous hydrogen peroxide is a non-standard and controversial approach based on oxidative mechanisms. It must not be confused with ordinary household or pharmacy hydrogen peroxide intended for external use.
Potential adverse reactions can include:
• vein irritation or phlebitis
• chest discomfort
• chills
• nausea
• headache
• weakness
This approach requires particular caution and should never be attempted independently.
💧 DMSO
DMSO has anti-inflammatory and other biological properties and has been explored experimentally in a number of medical contexts.
Possible adverse reactions may include:
• vein irritation
• discomfort during administration
• headache or dizziness
• reduced blood pressure
• changes in blood glucose
• muscle weakness or cramps
A characteristic skin or breath odour may also occur.
Good hydration and avoiding treatment on an empty stomach may improve general tolerance.
🩹 SOLCOSERYL
Solcoseryl is a deproteinised calf-blood derivative that has historically been used in some countries to support tissue repair and wound healing. Proposed effects relate to cellular metabolism, tissue oxygen utilisation, microcirculation and regeneration. It may therefore be considered where the supportive objective is tissue or mucosal recovery rather than direct anticancer treatment.
Possible adverse reactions include allergy, breathing difficulties, altered taste and bronchospasm. Its use in oncology is not established as standard cancer treatment.

💚 THE MOST IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE
Supportive oncology care should be individualised.
The goal is not to give as many substances as possible.
The goal is to identify:
What does this particular patient need?
What are we trying to improve?
Is it safe at this stage of treatment?
How are we going to measure the response?

Blood results, kidney and liver function, current medication, chemotherapy or radiotherapy schedule, hydration, nutritional status and the patient’s symptoms all matter.

⚠️ Supportive IV therapy is not a replacement for oncology treatment.
When a patient is receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted treatment, any additional intravenous therapy should be considered in the context of their oncology treatment and discussed with the appropriate medical team.

The right support, for the right patient, at the right time. 💚

🍂🌿 THE END OF SUMMER HOLIDAYS… AND THE BEGINNING OF ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SEASONS! 🌿🍂
This summer has been full of trips, beautiful places, adventures, discoveries and time spent with my family and close to nature. 💚 There has been plenty of exploring, walking, foraging and, as always, noticing the little treasures growing all around us.
And now, as summer slowly gives way to autumn, one of my absolute favourite seasons is beginning! 🙌🍁
🌰 AUTUMN FORAGING SEASON!
Nature is opening its pantry once again. Fruits and seeds are ripening, nuts are beginning to fall, mushrooms are appearing, and soon it will also be time to harvest certain roots.
Blackberries, hawthorn berries, rosehips, elderberries, rowan berries, nuts, acorns, wild seeds, mushrooms and many more seasonal treasures are waiting to be discovered. 🌿🍄🌰
This year I’m especially excited to experiment with acorns and Curly Duck — making acorn flour and traditional caffeine-free acorn coffee ☕🌰 — as well as collecting and processing more wild seeds and rediscovering some of the old ways our ancestors used the plants growing around them.
I absolutely love this time of year. ❤️ It feels as though nature’s kitchen, pantry and herbal cabinet all open at the same time. Some of my harvest will be dried, some transformed into tinctures, syrups, herbal teas and infused oils, and some will simply end up on the plate.
🍂 The summer holidays may be coming to an end, but the season of discovering nature certainly isn’t!

Today, 28 August, we have a beautiful Full Moon. 🌕
August’s Full Moon is traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon. The name comes from North American traditions and refers to the time of year when sturgeon were particularly abundant in lakes and rivers.

In many traditions, the Full Moon represents culmination, reflection and letting go of what we no longer need.
Maybe tonight is a good moment to ask yourself:

✨ What deserves more of my energy?
✨ What would I like to carry with me into the next month?

Now on addition I would like to share more inf about Castor Oil Packs - one of my client/friend reminded me ❤ So there you go⬇️

🌿 CASTOR OIL PACKS - Castor oil (Ricinus communis) has a long history of use in traditional health practices, both internally and externally. Its characteristic component is ricinoleic acid, which makes up the majority of the fatty acids found in castor oil.

🌿 Gut Health & Constipation - Oral castor oil has a well-established laxative effect. In the small intestine, ricinoleic acid is released and influences gastrointestinal motility.
For this reason, castor oil packs are used as a supportive practice for abdominal comfort and healthy bowel function.
🦠 IBS, Microorganisms & Parasites - Symptoms such as:
chronic bloating, excessive gas, changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort or pain, a feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation
can have many different causes.
One possibility that may sometimes need to be considered is parasitic infection.
In a study published in 2026, parasites were detected in 58.5% of the studied patients with IBS, while the percentage was considerably lower in the control group. That demonstrates that in certain populations, parasites and intestinal protozoa may be an important consideration when investigating persistent gastrointestinal symptoms.
🔬 Why Can Parasites Sometimes Be Difficult to Detect?
Diagnosing parasitic infections is not always straightforward.
A single stool sample may not be sufficient because the shedding of parasites, cysts or eggs can be intermittent.
Depending on the suspected organism, diagnostic methods may include: Microscopy • Antigen testing • PCR • Serology and several stool samples collected on different days may sometimes be required. Molecular techniques such as PCR can, in some circumstances, identify organisms that are not detected by routine microscopy.
🧬 Biofilm - A biofilm is an organised structure consisting of microorganisms surrounded by a protective extracellular matrix.
Laboratory research indicates that ricinoleic acid and some of its derivatives demonstrate antibacterial activity and affect certain types of biofilm. This represents an interesting area of research into the biological properties of castor oil.
🌿 Castor Oil Packs - In traditional and complementary health practices, castor oil is applied to a cloth that is placed over the abdomen. The traditional method generally involves:
Castor oil + cotton cloth + warmth + prolonged contact with the skin. Castor oil packs are commonly used to support:
🌿 digestive comfort
🌿 bowel regularity
🌿 abdominal relaxation
🌿 local tissue comfort
In natural and complementary health practices, they are also used as part of programmes aimed at supporting the liver, bile flow, lymphatic system and intestinal function. They are many individuals who are recommending and proving is working!
💧 What May Be Noticed When Bowel Function Changes?
Changes in intestinal transit may be accompanied by differences in:
stool consistency, the amount of mucus, frequency of bowel movements, the appearance of material passed in the stool
The intestinal tract naturally produces mucins, which form the protective mucus layer of the gut.

So, Yes - It may be worth trying castor oil packs as a supportive practice to help improve bowel function and regularity, support the body’s natural detoxification processes, and reduce abdominal bloating and discomfort.

Castor oil

The ancient Egyptians already appreciated the wonderful properties of castor oil. They used it to treat skin and eye diseases, hair care and even headaches. Interestingly, this oil is very important in Ayurvedic medicine.

So what does castor oil do?
- wonderfully moisturizes the skin /if used skillfully/
- supports the treatment of respiratory diseases and has an expectorant effect
- stimulates hair follicles and stimulates hair growth
- strengthens the immune system
- relieves inflammation
- eliminates constipation
- cares for eye health

What exactly is castor oil made of? - The raw material for obtaining this valuable oil are castor seeds. The active ingredient is ricin. It is important that the oil is unrefined and cold-pressed. Only then does it retain its valuable properties. I would like to emphasize once again that only such oils are suitable for use, either externally or internally. I often hear opinions that a given oil does not work, and when I ask whether the oil used is unrefined, many people do not even know what oil they use. This is a basic mistake. Cheap, widely available castor oil is a refined product, foreign to the human body and is only suitable for oiling door locks.

Castor oil mainly consists of:
- ricinoleic acid - an unsaturated omega-9 fatty acid and, as we know, these acids have strong anti-inflammatory properties, unrefined olive oil is also a rich source of these acids
- oleic acid
- linolenic acid
- flavonoids
- terpenoids

1. Castor oil for skin - It perfectly moisturizes the skin, soothes, nourishes, heals pimples, pimples and bacterial lesions. It also reduces existing wrinkles. The skin becomes soft, velvety and perfectly moisturized. It penetrates deeply into the skin tissue and soothes inflammation and itching, so it is recommended for skin with eczema and those looking for relief. It retains moisture in the epidermis, penetrates deep into the skin and increases collagen production. Interestingly, the antioxidants contained in the oil help protect the skin against sunburn.

Ricinoleic acid binds to receptors on the intestinal walls, causing them to contract and push stool out. It should not be used too often or for a long time because it may cause dehydration and uterine contractions. To make castor oil swallowable, you can mix it with, for example, milk, plant milk, juice, ginger tea. Cooling the oil also eliminates its unpleasant aftertaste. Adults can take from 1 to a maximum of 4 tablespoons of oil per day depending on body weight. Children, however, up to 1 teaspoon. The oil will begin to have a laxative effect within 1 to 3 hours.

Remember if you are pregnant, do not take castor oil! It may cause premature birth!

Also, do not overdo it with the internal use of oil. If you use it systematically (which I do not recommend), do not exceed 1 teaspoon a day. Remember to drink plenty of water while taking it internally, as castor oil is dehydrating. If you have any doubts about whether you are taking medication, consult your doctor before using the oil.
When it comes to external use, if you do not have allergies, you can safely use it even every day. First, test it on a small area of ​​your skin to check if you are allergic to it.
Do not use old, rancid or expired oil. Keep it in a dry, dark and cool room, maybe a refrigerator.
