Multiple Sclerosis - Former Champion Learns To RUN Again 🏆

Bec used to be the fastest in her county but MS decline prevented her from running - until now.

Followers might recognise Bec from previous videos, showing the first steps we took towards achieving this huge goal. After significantly improving her walking, gait and balance, Bec returned to APEX NEURO for a one-off session (a sort of “top up”) and ended up achieving a whole lot more again.

After assessing her walking, Luke could see that Bec had been working hard at home (she’s a good student!) and had shown such an improvement that it was time for the next challenge - one that Bec might make look easy in this video, but for someone who previously found it challenging to walk, and hasn’t run for years with MS is an AMAZING accomplishment: running.

Luke first breaks the individual steps down, essentially how to take hopping from side-to-side can to eventually become streamlined into running.

Bec isn’t the first client we’ve taught to run again, but she has some serious speed that is a first (and takes all of us, including Bec, by surprise!)

Beforehand, when she tried it, it was like she was running in slow-motion or through water. But here, through hard work and coaching, she’s getting some good mph up and down the corridor. This is a big step towards Bec getting to the life she had before Multiple Sclerosis.

Paralympics in LA 2028, maybe? 👀

Multiple Sclerosis - First Time Lifting His Foot in 5 years! (Improving Drop Foot)

For people who’ve not experienced a loss of muscle control or don’t live with neurodegenerative conditions, it’s difficult to understand what a big, emotional moment this is. After years of decline and not being able to move his foot, this is the moment Connor begins to regain control in his foot - a huge achievement!

Connor’s progressive MS means his leg muscles have spent with limited movement, and there was a possibility that gaining a response could have taken time. However, during his first visit, we were able to achievement movement, which is so exciting. The electrical current helps generate a both sensation in the foot, which has been dormant for a long time. Laura throws out a “shot in the dark” - let’s see if Connor can do the movement after 5 years of not being able to…

And he could!

This is a mindset our whole team adopts - “let’s see” rather than an assumption of “can’t” which is the traditional narrative for Multiple Sclerosis. And moments like this prove why that mindset is so important. You can see how much it means to all of us, and especially Connor.

But the best part is that it wasn’t just once - it was several times. Being able to do it once after a long period of rest is great, but being able to replicate it and do it multiple times more means a greater step forward to being able to do this voluntarily - the foundations for walking.

They may joke that the session is done, but they’re just getting started.

Multiple Sclerosis - 5-Day Progress (international intensive rehab)

Nicola travelled from the Netherlands to the UK to work with Erin after seeing our results with Multiple Sclerosis. Nicola has noticed reduced control and feeling in her muscles, which had begun to affect her walking, especially at long distances.

Erin begins the week by working on improving contraction and voluntary control in specific muscles. This forms the foundation of improved walking.
They are then able to start implementing these changes into walking - focusing on the mechanics to improve fluidity and stability. There is a lot going on here — making sure the foot clears the ground to prevent tripping, making sure that she’s solid while balancing on one leg, making sure the step is wide enough.

As you can see, with practice, Nicola gets better and better. Alongside walking, they also achieve improving the movement required when putting shoes on/taking them off. When Nicola returns to the Netherlands she’s walking with better stability, faster and clearing the ground.

The moment that Ben realises the steps he’s taken - literally - after a long time reliant on crutches due to Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

Rob and Ben spent 5 days working on mobility and speech - in Ben’s case these symptoms were linked, which we have seen previously with other FND cases. After some initial work improving brain-body communication and muscle control, Rob and Ben reached a point where they were able to practice walking.

When Ben is able to walk well with the crutches, it’s time to walk without them. Rob holds onto Ben as he starts to practice, coaching and amending Ben’s movements. With practice, Ben becomes ready to walk without Rob — a huge and emotional moment. There is often a huge sigh of relief that comes with making progress when other interventions have failed.

The more Ben’s mobility improves, the more his speech improves. Ben has a stop-start pattern to his speech and often his words would fade off mid-sentence, and found it specifically hard to make “h” sounds. As they walk, his ability to produce the “h” gets better. One of the challenges for traditional interventions is FND doesn’t fit into a neat box - there are so many crossovers in symptoms that require a team that can allow room for symptoms to be linked in unexpected ways.

Luke is working with Catherine to help her improve balance and stability which is affected when she looks around. This is important as the eyes move a lot during walking and assessing the environment, so we need to be able to look in all directions without our balance being impacted.

Catherine is standing in water with an electrical current — the water disperses the electrical current, allowing it to cover a larger surface area and stimulate the vast network of nerves in her feet to enhance sensory feedback. This improves her proprioception, providing a more stable foundation for walking.

As Catherine starts to look side-to-side, Luke notices how this impacts her posture, especially her knees. While looking up and down shows quick improvement, looking to the back-right presents the biggest challenge. Luke has an amazing ability to get to the root of a problem, and to understand the issue so that he can try to solve it. Catherine mentions that she struggles with keeping her eyes closed. This is a common problem we deal with, and Catherine finds that from the little work her and Luke have already done, she’s able to close them a lot longer.

Motor Neurone Disease - Standing Again

The emotional moment that Christian’s partner sees him standing ❤️

Christian travelled to the UK to APEX NEURO following a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease.

With a goal of improving Christian’s sit-to-stand, Laura began by working on muscles in Christian’s legs. As is often the case with MND, Christian has better control in some muscles than others. By improving the contraction in the muscle, they were able to start practicing standing.

Laura encourages Christian to focus on using his glutes to help him stand, concentrating on ‘driving-through’ rather than standing up. A lot of clients we see will rely on other muscles when the control in specific areas is reduced, so we need to work on improving the contraction in the affected muscles and coaching clients on their form/movement.

Christian’s partner joins him during the session, and there are a few happy tears when Christian achieves the goal of standing — this is all part of the process (and Laura is ready with tissues!)

Multiple Sclerosis - First Time in the Gym in 6 Years

Getting back into the gym after some time away can be daunting, but improving muscle strength and mass can be incredibly important for progress with Multiple Sclerosis, so it’s a bridge our clients and practitioners often cross together. This is Dan’s first time using the gym in 6 years. Using the gym can be an intimidating experience, especially if it’s the first time, or the first time in a long time. Erin’s job is to coach Dan through the movements to make sure he’s making the most out of his time when training, and also feels confident to continue without Erin.

Dan had been progressing with Erin through weekly sessions for some time now, building up more control of his muscles and beginning to walk unaided. They reach a stage he is ready to go to the gym so Erin can teach him the process and techniques to rebuild muscle and improve strength. This is hard work, but you can see how happy both Dan and Erin are with these achievements, and it’s a really strong start. Armed with knowledge and confidence, Dan can continue the work without Erin (muscle and strength takes time and repetition!)

Multiple Sclerosis - Athlete Learning to Walk Again

Paul travelled from Belgium to work with APEX NEURO with a primary goal (to stand longer independently) - we didn’t just achieve this initial goal, we were able to set another! 🏆

Having spent his younger years playing basketball, Paul is used to living a very active life. However, progression of Multiple Sclerosis symptoms means he now uses a wheelchair full time.

Using e-stim to improve the communication between his brain and body, Paul was able to progress to standing unaided for 16 minutes. With practice, he becomes more comfortable, making adjustments to keep himself stood steadily, even able to hold a conversation with Rob - and some dancing! With this progress, it was clear they needed to reassess his goals.

Rob starts by breaking down the mechanics of walking for Paul. When a client has reduced or lost the voluntary control of their muscles, providing this information is an important step. Rob then works on the specific areas of weakness that will be contributing to the difficulties when walking, coaching Paul so he understands why those muscles are needed and the overarching plan. They continue to work on the standing throughout - Paul being able to stand comfortably and confidently will greatly contribute to his walking. An exciting step forward!

Multiple Sclerosis - Spasticity, Reflexes & Dorsiflexion

We love being able to capture the moments where we see the change people have been hoping for - sometimes for years. (A small note - filming is not a mandatory part of working with us — but all the moments we do get to capture means a lot to our team and all the people who watch our videos and find hope in seeing these changes and achievements!)

During her first visit, Lorraine wasn’t able to achieve dorsiflexion and her ankle and foot were stuck in a position that made walking incredibly difficult. Luke was determined to get to the bottom of this.

Using an electrically-conductive glove, Luke is stimulating nerves in Lorraine’s foot which previously had very limited response. Most often, there was a spasticity reflex (this also happened when touched without electric) but Lorraine had very limited voluntary control in her toes. This time, as they’re working on her feet, Lorraine starts being able to bend and extend her big toe. They also start to see a marked reduction in the spasticity reflex. Finally, they are able to achieve dorsiflexion - a huge step towards improved walking as Lorraine needs to be able to independently lift her foot to take steps.
Patience and expertise go hand-in-hand, especially when there has been significant progression in MS symptoms — change takes time! However, big moments like this are exciting for all of us, and who knows - maybe Lorraine will be able to start getting pedicures again…?!
