Breathworks

Breathworks UK charity helping people manage pain, fatigue & long-term conditions through mindfulness & community

Breathworks is a not-for-profit social enterprise and leading international mindfulness organisation co-founded by Vidyamala Burch. The organisation was born out of Vidyamala's personal journey. She first injured her spine at 17 years old and learned to meditate in 1985. In 2001 she started teaching meditation and mindfulness to people living with pain, illness and stress out of a desire to share

what she had learned with others. Vidyamala is now an experienced meditation teacher who works internationally. She offers wise and practical guidance in how to bring mindfulness and kindness to experience - including difficulties such as pain and illness - so one can 'live well' with a free and relaxed mind, whatever the circumstances. Today, Vidyamala is an internationally known author of Living Well with Pain and Illness, BMA award winner Mindfulness for Health co-authored with best-selling writer Danny Penman and her latest book Mindfulness for Women co-authored with award winning editor Claire Irvin. Breathworks mindfulness courses, teacher training programme and products have been developed to meet the needs of everyone living with chronic pain, physical illness and associated stress. They are designed to ensure that regardless of your situation or condition, you can have access to the Breathworks methods. We also provide specialist programmes for organisations and for health, education and social care professionals wishing to incorporate mindfulness into their work. Breathworks programmes and products are a development of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and founded on practice-based research. Our research on the clinical benefits of mindfulness revealed that across all scales measured (mood, pain experience, quality of life and confidence in activity despite pain), the Breathworks approach showed statistically and clinically significant improvement.

New research in press in the journal Health Psychology followed over 1,400 people living with chronic pain across two years, examining the relationship between emotional awareness and how much pain disrupts daily life.

The researchers found that people who struggled to recognise and put words to their own feelings tended to develop higher levels of anxiety and depression over time — and that psychological distress, in turn, made pain harder to live with.

The effect was modest, but the direction was consistent: the difficulty naming feelings seemed to come first, not as a consequence of pain.

The researchers point to practices that build emotional awareness, including mindfulness, as a potential recommendation.

A special evening is fast approaching! 💙

On Monday 23rd March, we welcome Sharon Salzberg — world-renowned meditation and compassion teacher, and New York Times bestselling author.

Sharon will join Breathworks co-founder Vidyamala Burch OBE in conversation, speaking about the tools that helped them navigate significant adversity and find their way to where they are today.

For both speakers, following a spiritual path and adopting a regular meditation and compassion practice were key to coping with unimaginable difficulty. In this open and honest conversation, we'll hear more of their stories.

There will also be space for shared meditation practice and Q&A.

Online via Zoom, 18:30–20:30 UK time. Open to all — no experience needed.

Tickets from £19.50, with all proceeds supporting The Breathworks Foundation's free and affordable mindfulness resources.

New research is shedding light on why chronic pain tends to last longer in women than men — and the answer may lie in the immune system.

A study just published in Science Immunology found that immune cells called monocytes play an active role in resolving pain, and that these cells are more effective in males due to the influence of s*x hormones.

For women, this means pain resolution can be slower — not because of perception or pain tolerance, but because of biology.

🗣As the lead researcher put it: "It's not in your head. It's in your immune system."

For the millions of women living with chronic pain whose experience has been dismissed or minimised, that's a meaningful validation — we hope this study will be an important step towards better, more targeted support.

Chronic pain lasts longer for women than men, and new research suggests differences in hormone-regulated immune cells, called monocytes, may help explain why.

A bit of myth-busting ⤵️

Acceptance is NOT
🚫 Giving up or being passive
🚫 Pretending everything's fine
🚫 Liking or approving of difficult situations

Acceptance is
✅ Seeing things clearly as they are right now, without fighting reality.

Acceptance isn't easy. Sometimes it asks us to sit with a hard truth. Something we wish wasn't the case. But we must ask ourselves -- what good does it do to fight what is already here?

For Tinnitus Week, we spoke to three women about their health journeys. Read more about what mindfulness practices helped (and didn't help!) them manage challenging & persistent symptoms.
