Meet the Team⭐
We’re starting off our series of team highlights with our first feature- Elaine!

Elaine joined Breakthrough in 2003 as part of an employment advocacy project supporting disabled people and employers to remove barriers to work.

She moved into policy and engagement in 2010, working closely with former CEOs Lorraine Gradwell and Michele Scattergood, and has since led on community projects around health equity and inclusive employment.

She's an experienced disability inclusion trainer and community researcher, and manages most members of our team.

💬 “I love working with such amazing colleagues and seeing our staff develop… It’s a privilege to work for such a supportive and impactful organisation and I learn lots every day. Thanks to everyone who contributes to our work.”

We realised we've never properly introduced ourselves 👋

We’re Breakthrough UK.

We work alongside disabled people to remove barriers and create more inclusive opportunities- whether that’s through employment support, advocacy, or working with organisations to do better.

Our work includes projects like Manchester Disability Collaborative, Foundations for Change, Equal Edge, DPEG, and DDRG- each focused on creating change in different spaces, from workplaces to communities.

You’ll start to see more from us over the next few weeks, including team highlights so you can get to know the people behind the work.

Disability isn’t something within a person- it’s created by the barriers in society 🌍

The social model of disability helps us shift perspective: instead of asking what’s “wrong” with an individual, we ask what’s getting in the way. That might be physical access, inflexible systems, communication barriers, or attitudes that exclude rather than include 💡

When we remove those barriers, people can participate fully and equally- not because they’ve changed, but because the environment has 🤝

If you’re looking to build a more inclusive workplace, our Social Model of Disability training for employers supports teams to turn understanding into practical action ✨

It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week 💙

This year’s theme is moving from awareness to action- because knowing about neurodiversity isn’t enough on its own. It’s about what we do with that understanding every day.

Neurodivergent people belong- in our workplaces, our communities, and every space in between 🌟
Our brains work different... and that’s something to celebrate.

The Manchester Disability Collaborative (MDC) is looking for a new Administrator and Governance Support!

Are you looking for your next challenge supporting the delivery of a Manchester's landmark forum of disabled people, their organisations and city partners?
Do you have experience of high quality administration and social media delivery?
We'd love to hear from you!

Over recent years, MDC has hosted a variety of events, conducted significant coproduction work and formed workstreams to tackle disabling barriers in various aspects of life in the city. We pride ourselves on our membership, the profile we are establishing as Manchester’s go-to forum for disability-related matters, and the wealth of experience we host.

We are looking for a highly organised and self-motivated individual who is passionate about removing barriers that disabled people face. You will be joining an ambitious organisation with strong social values and business ethics working in a dynamic environment. You will be resourceful and able to work effectively on your own initiative and as a team member contributing to achievement of shared goals as well as individual targets. You will have a ‘can-do’ approach and demonstrable commitment to equality of opportunity.

For details of the job specification, and how to apply, please see the job description at https://breakthrough-uk.co.uk/job-vacancies/ . Please email [email protected], or [email protected] if you require alternative formats or any additional support with your application. Applications close Friday 16th January at 12 noon.
