MAT is pleased to share that we have a defined and measurable Carbon Reduction Strategy (CRS) in place, in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.

We all have a responsibility to operate in an environmentally-responsible manner. The GHG Protocol provides a standardised framework for companies to measure, manage, and reduce their total carbon footprint across direct operations and entire supply chain.

A base year of 2023 has been selected. We have a business-wide commitment to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by28% by 2030 and reach Net Zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035. Scope 1 covers direct greenhouse gases from company-owned sources, such as cars and factory machinery. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity.

We are also currently underway with our Scope 3 Net Zero review and are actively engaging our key supply chain partners in defining objectives and pathways to achieving Scope 3 Net Zero by 2040. Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions up and down the supply and value chain, for example goods and services bought from suppliers, and is usually the largest part of a company's footprint.

👷 We’d like to introduce our Year in Industry student, Liv McCarthy, who has been out and about this week with Contracts Director Adrian Parkin, visiting client sites to learn more about our business. Liv is studying Business Management with Psychology at Sheffield Hallam University.

Adrian says, “It’s great to have Liv with us. It’s really important to support students by giving them practical experience, but we have no doubt that we’ll get as much out of it as she does, benefitting from her fresh approach to the way we operate. Over the year, Liv will have the opportunity to work with different departments across the company – and she’ll be able to say hi to her dad, MAT Project Support Engineer Mick McCarthy, when they pass on the stairs!”

As these photos show, the new CL3 laboratories within the MRC Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine are progressing well, from demolition to the current phase – the application of specialist internal finishes.

When completed, as in the artist impression, they will be part of the leading health research facility in West Africa, helping to save lives and improve research and evaluation of interventions for disease control among populations in sub-Saharan Africa.

We are very proud to have designed, specified and procured the ventilation, mechanical and electrical installations that will ensure the containment laboratories operate to UK ACDP and HSE standards.

Hard to believe it's ten years this summer since we were at The McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead, completing the first stage of the hospital's new ultraclean ventilation (UCV) operating theatre suite.

The design of the ECO-flow canopy has evolved since then, with the introduction of the flush-to-ceiling Stealth model, but the core principle - the reduction of bioburden and airborne bacteria for safer surgery - remains the same, in line with the requirements of HTM 03-01 (2021). This supports hospitals in the fight against surgical site infection, one of the most frequently reported types of healthcare-associated infection.

⚙️ Often, 50% or more of the value of our installations is hidden from view, but the plantroom, an example of which is shown below, is the beating heart of the project, whether serving an operating theatre, cleanroom, containment laboratory, or any other environment using a critical ventilation system. The plantroom houses the heavy mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment needed to run the new facility.
