Celebrating Success and Maintaining Motivation | Life After Surgery 🩵

In the first 6 to 12 months following bariatric surgery, often referred to as the honeymoon period, patients typically experience rapid, significant weight loss. However, long-term success requires transitioning from momentum to sustained behavioral modification.

A common challenge during this phase is the tendency to overlook substantial milestones and focus entirely on remaining targets. In our latest video, consultant bariatric surgeon Mr. Bilal Alkhaffaf discusses the clinical importance of celebrating psychological, behavioral, and metabolic achievements to maintain long-term motivation.

Robotic surgery is often misunderstood.

Despite the name, the robot never operates independently — every movement is fully controlled by the surgeon.

In upper GI and weight loss surgery, robotic platforms can improve visualisation and precision in selected procedures, but technology is only one part of good surgical care.

Choosing the right operation, for the right patient, at the right time remains the most important factor.

Understanding and Preventing Weight Regain After Bariatric Surgery

The post-operative journey following weight loss surgery involves natural fluctuations. While surgery serves as a highly effective tool, long-term weight maintenance relies on structured behavioral strategies.

Consultant bariatric surgeon Mr. Bilal Alkhaffaf outlines the essential steps to remain on track and mitigate the risk of weight regain:

Having a comprehensive clinical support network available, particularly during the first two years, is vital for addressing challenges early. Weight management depends heavily on your individual circumstances. Identifying the specific environments or scenarios that lead to poor dietary choices allows for better preventative planning. True physical hunger builds gradually. Head or emotional hunger strikes abruptly, often driven by boredom, sadness, or environmental prompts. Recognising the underlying emotion is crucial to halting the behaviors that drive weight regain.
