This September, consultant surgeon and experienced long-distance runner Muntzer Mughal is taking on the 190-mile Coast to Coast walk in memory of his dear friend Colin, while raising awareness and funds for Heart Valve Voice.
Muntzer and Colin had been friends for 30 years and had planned to complete the challenge together. Sadly, Colin passed away unexpectedly in June following a short illness.
Colin underwent a successful heart valve replacement 11 years ago and went on to enjoy many more years of good health — a powerful reminder of the difference timely diagnosis and successful heart valve treatment can make.
On 4 September, Muntzer will set off from St Bees, carrying two pebbles from the Irish Sea — one for himself and one for Colin. After 12 days and 190 miles, he’ll place them in the North Sea at Robin Hood’s Bay, where he plans to finish during Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week. For the final mile, Muntzer will be joined by his wife, Shameela, and Colin’s widow, Themis, bringing this incredibly personal journey to a fitting close.
