We also offer takeaway dal( the best) , seriously good hummus pots and cakes/cookies. We are open Monday to Saturday from 9am -5pm

Made quince jelly this week, loved the process. No coring or peeling , just chop up , cover in water and boil for an hour, mash and hang in a muslin bag to drip overnight. Add sugar (800g per litre of juice), lemon juice and slowly bring to boil. I added lemon geranium leaf as have lots but would be good with cardamon. Mesmerised how the colour changes to this vivid pink whilst boiling.
Btw the sound track is who is playing at this saturday whose lyrics made the whole process a joy 😊.
The beautiful pink jars of jelly are for sale and good with cheese & oatcakes, on top of icecream, granola &yoghurt or just spread on toast & butter 🩷

Happy Diwali from Lakshmi 🪔. She has been busy at home today making snacks for her family (and hopefully us 😉). Photos 2,3,4 are Nimki (or Namak Pura) made with flour, nigella seeds, ghee & cumin. Photo 5 is a snack made with whole sesame seeds and ground pea & rice flour her mum gave to her in the summer when she was home to bring back. Photo 6 is a candle we lit today as a new delivery of our 3 wick candles .

We have the full range in stock and will be doing tasters today and tomorrow too, so make sure you pop down to try some.

This is an African American dish that is traditionally eaten at New Year but instead of bacon, nori is substituted which has a huge amount of health benefits. It’s from an excellent book by Colin Spencer ‘The New Vegetarian’ published in 1986 when I was 16. My mum started cooking it and it also became a family favourite with my children. It is simple to make and utterly delicious 😋

HOPPIN JOHN

150g black eyed beans, pre-soaked overnight
3 tblsp olive oil
5 garlic cloves crushed (I use 3 or 4)
2 large onions, finely sliced
1 red and 1 green pepper, finely sliced
135g brown rice ( I use brown basmati)
2 nori sheets, cut small with scissors
1.2L veg stock
seasoning to taste
generous handful of chopped parsley

Drain the beans. Heat the oil in a casserole & add the onions, peppers & garlic. Cook over a low heat until they soften, then add the beans, rice & nori. Stir and cook for a minute or 2. Pour in the stock, bring to the boil & simmer for 45 mins until the beans & rice are tender. Season well & add the parsley.

Hello October with a beautiful sunrise on
Manningtree beach.
Me, Lakshmi & Jo had such a peaceful day in the shop with the road closed outside. Some space to light candles, eat veg curry for lunch, get the gloves & socks out, give some autumn gifts a new home, welcome in some beautiful veg & honey & make quince jelly.

A very small section of the High St will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday this week. You will still be able to drive into Manningtree all the way to the crossroads by Cafe Rio, up South St and down to the beach and along the walls so it will not affect parking. In fact it’s easier when there’s a road closure than any other time as the signs all the way to the station roundabout and in Mistley imply the whole High St is closed.
