I’m a midwife, so when I was writing my birth plan I had a really good idea of what kinds of births there are and what I really didn’t want.
I planned a homebirth and hoped I would labour by myself, avoiding all interventions.
However, after an induction of labour at 41 weeks + 6 days, hyperstimulation, an epidural that wore off and a cervix stubbornly hanging out at 4cm but no further... I asked for a C Section.
A relaxed, no drama, happy belly birth on my own terms.
In theatre I laughed and cried and cry-laughed when I saw my baby’s face for the first time. What a fu***ng magical, cosmic moment.

It wasn’t the birth I planned. But I knew where my line was and what I wasn’t willing to do. I didn’t want synthetic oxytocin, or an instrumental birth. I didn’t want to be labouring for days on no sleep, with an epidural either too heavy or too light.
What is right for one person is wrong for another. No judgement. Birth is personal.

In the end I chose to meet my boy in an operating theatre, surrounded by colleagues, best friends and my husband Jack. The love in that room was a wonder drug. I felt safe, supported, and in control. I felt like a superhuman. That’s how it should be.
And I have a thin white scar line on my body to remind me.
