Middle age for women is one of the MOST SIGNIFICANT and MEANINGFUL transitions we will go through.
Driven by a decline in circulating oestrogen and progesterone, the consequences of mid life on our skin are significant!
OESTROGEN 📣
Oestrogen is fundamental in the maintenance of skin integrity, its reduction through mid life causes an acceleration in the ageing appearance of skin.
Less oestrogen means:
- less stimulation of fibroblasts.
- less collagen support and elastin synthesis.
- less hylaroinc acid production.
- less regulated sebaceous gland function.
- a smaller gap between oestrogen and testosterone which means a relative androgen increase.
=
- Increased skin laxity
- more pronounced fine lines and wrinkles
- reduced dermal volume (and increased bone reabsorption, worsening support and volume loss).
- thinning of the skin and atrophic (shrinkage) changes.
- impaired skin barrier, leading to a greater risk of inflammation, and pigmentation changes.
- middle aged acne alongside dry skin.
PROGESTERONE 📣
Progesterone becomes unbalanced and these hormonal changes directly affect sebum production, moisture balance, and skin renewal which can lead to various skin problems.
Less progesterone means:
- reduces sebum production, drying out skin and loosing barrier support, compromising its protective function.
- skin is less able to retain moisture which results in tightness, dullness and dryness.
- alongside the rollercoaster of hormones that are fluctuating and decreasing, they make skin more reactive to environmental changes and products.
😱
Midlife represents a period of CHANGE, and we must change our APPROACH to how we support our bodies through it.
