Ice lollies to be had by all!
Our lovely carers are delivering care & ice lollies to clients during this heat wave, keeping cool is so important and keeping on top of fluid intake, even if it’s a little ice lolly treat 👒⛱️

Ageing weakens the body's natural cooling mechanisms. We become more susceptible to heat stroke as we get older ☀️

On a day like today, recognising the signs of heat stroke and knowing how to cool someone quickly is crucial 😎

Especially this week, a little bowl of water can help so many 🦔

The next few days are going to be very hot, with red weather warnings in place in various areas across the UK - including the southern border of Leicestershire.

Here are some steps you can take to help wildlife in this heat:

1 - Leave out shallow dishes of clean water. Place these at various heights to allow a range of wildlife access to the water and be sure to add in various rocks and pebbles to the water as it is important that insects are able to have a drink too! Always be sure to wash your bird baths, and water bowls daily to avoid any disease transmission.

2 - Make a muddy puddle! Swifts, swallows and martins will use wet mud to construct their nests. During heatwaves, this mud will quickly dry out and nests can easily collapse. You can help by creating a muddle puddle for them to build & top up their nests with to keep them strong! Clay tends to work best but any is a help to them.

3 - Provide cover from the sun. Create log piles, tall grassy areas and ensure trees and hedges are kept bushy to create shade.

4 - If you see a wild animal suffering during this heatwave, get them some help asap. Hyperthermia affects wildlife and it could be fatal. Give your local wildlife rescue a call if you have even the slightest concern - it is best to ask! If you see any chicks that have 'jumped' the nest due to heat, any hedgehogs laid out in the sun, or any lethargic and wobbly wildlife, they will all need help!

Older adults often don't feel thirsty until they're already dehydrated, which is why telling them to drink more rarely works.

Making it easy, and easy to spot, tends to do more.

Frozen fruit juice in an ice cube tray. Drop a few into a glass of squash through the day, slowly melting, gently topping it up.

Slices of watermelon, cucumber, or orange in a bowl in the fridge. Easier to reach for than a drink, and they count.

A jug on the side, refilled at breakfast. Knowing how much is left by lunchtime tells you more than asking ever will.
