🍂 AUTUMN RESET 🍂

A morning to pause, breathe and reconnect as the season begins to change.

As summer starts to soften into autumn, we’re invited to shift our pace too.

On Saturday 3rd October, I’m joining forces with Chelsie Chelsie for a nourishing morning of yoga, breathwork, sauna and cold-water contrast therapy.

We’ll begin with a gently invigorating yoga practice, using movement to wake up the body and create a sense of grounded presence.

Then Chelsie will guide us through functional breathwork, exploring simple practices that can support regulation, resilience and everyday wellbeing.

And finally, we’ll head into an hour of hot and cold contrast therapy, with time to enjoy the panoramic sauna overlooking Manchester and beyond.

WHY MANTRA?

What happens when we stop talking about the practice and start listening to it?

Mantra is often described as a practice for focusing the mind. Through repetition, rhythm and sound, it gives our attention somewhere to rest.

But chanting is also a very physical practice.

We feel the breath moving through the body.

We feel the vibration of the voice.

We hear the sound around us.

We listen.

We repeat.

We become more present.

The slower rhythm of chanting and the extended exhalations that can accompany it may support the body’s shift towards a calmer, more settled state, while the repetition of mantra gives the busy mind something steady to follow.

And then there is the simple pleasure of sound.

Sound can uplift us. Move us. Connect us. Change the atmosphere of a room. Bring us out of our heads and back into our bodies.

You don’t need to be a singer.
You don’t need to know Sanskrit.
You don’t need any experience of chanting.

You just need to be willing to listen.

On 17 September, I’ll be joined by Marple-based musician Taylor Giacoma for an evening of gentle movement, posture inquiry, sound, mantra and chanting.

We’ll explore a chant connected to santosha – contentment, and practice mantra as a doorway into some of the deeper dimensions of yoga.

A chance to broaden the practice beyond the physical postures and discover what happens when sound becomes part of the yoga.

🌿 Thursday 17 September
🌿 7–9pm
🌿 £40

Suitable for complete beginners and anyone curious to explore mantra and sound more deeply.

Mum’s been going through the family photo albums - there are decades worth of printed photographs in there. Not many of my dad on his own - we don’t have many portraits of him - but we do have lots of photographs with his top off whilst on holiday!

He was a former international standard discuss thrower and spent most if his spare time coaching and developing strength and conditioning programs for athletes - including me!

My parents were a huge source of inspiration to me as an aspiring athlete - I only ever wanted to go to the Olympic Games! That was my biggest dream!!

I didn’t make it - but I’ve made peace with that. I think what I want to say here is that their support was fundamental to everything I was able to achieve on the track and in the field (I played with pole vault for a little while) both sprinting and pole vault got me to compete at at an international level from the age of 15 to 22! I’m so grateful for everything they provided me with and shared with me.

So, back to this photograph - I remember getting my first pair of Oakley’s when I was about 17-18…so I reckon this is the year before I went to Loughborough (1999ish).

Every year - sometimes more than once we would go warm weather training Club La Santa to prepare for the racing season - get faster, stronger and recover well. Lots of chill time in between hard training sessions.

These were incredible opportunities and experiences that I shared with them both.
Along with all the other athletes who joined us! Karlene Palmer-Mcleod .thomas.3939 Dani Halsall

On a very practical level I can really thank my dad for his intuition and knowledge of human anatomy and biomechanics - from skill to strength to performance!

And I always thought of him when I was younger as a wise owl 🦉 and a big bear. 🐻 very intelligent and very huggable!

It’s thanks to both of my parents that I have such an interest in movement and have been able to share a more mindful approach with them both over the years.

Thanks to them I still absolutely love athletics and it’s always been a solid, passionate talking point!

This September… 🌟

Broaden Your Horizons 🌅

I’m co-hosting another beautiful evening with the lovely Taylor Giacoma exploring yoga and mantra.

We’ll be drawing upon yoga philosophy from the yoga sutra as we explore movement, gesture, sound, mantra and stillness with samtosha (contentment) at the heart of the practice.

Expect gentle postural exploration designed to help ease tensions, build stamina and deepen self-awareness. The mantra will accessible and taught in a way that is invitational and uplifting.

Some movement will include the mantra - layering the practice as we go.

At times there will be moments of pause - useful for interoception and reflection.

We will conclude the evening with a herbal tea preparing you for a restful night with special thanks to The Teapot Leaf Teas 🫂

This event is open to anyone who is curious about yoga, sound work, breath and meditation. We’d love you to join us! You don’t need any prior experience of chanting or even yoga to attend - just an open mind and a curiosity for what else there may be for you to be able to resource yourself with mindful practices in your daily life. 🫂 💓

Two weeks ago today we threw ourselves whole heartedly into the Cantabrian sea knowing that our return home would be full of trepidation.

The day before I was looking at flights home so that I could spend time with my dad who was very poorly in hospital. But that day with his permission we stayed on and fulfilled our incredible summer holiday which ended here on the beach in Isla.

I have so many memories like this one shared with him from my childhood, I knew in my heart that he wanted me to keep on enjoying these precious moments with my own beautiful family.

I’m grateful to have enjoyed this joyful experience with them during a time that was really quite sad and scary within. It gave me the energy I needed to be able to spend his last few days with him.

Missing my strong dad every day.

Breathing in - I welcome the autumn air

Breathing out - I smile to the autumn air

Last night we lost my Dad. He was everything he needed to be and more. With us to the very end. His last breath. His last beat of a very tired heart.

It was so sad and yet so beautiful, the love her shared with us.

Thanks for your patience, thoughts and love.

I smile to my Dad as he smiled and showed me how much he loved me.
