Really, it’s my pleasure. I have come to the point in life where disappointing someone means I’m finally choosing myself. For me, clearing the expectations of others was the only way to see what I wanted.

I’m no longer putting any effort into being young and thin, as my former partner wished. I’m not living up to the goals I was raised on, with a lot of letters next to my name, a fancy title and hefty paycheck. I’m not even managing to keep the clean house I value, or the practices that I know would elevate me.

I’ve disappointed myself.

And there’s a certain sweetness in that. The world has not ended because I stopped striving. We can, in fact, decide that enough is enough. We don’t need to impress the opposite s*x, our parents, our work colleagues or the masse delusion of strangers on the internet, watching us with a judging eye.

Disappointment doesn’t kill. Instead it slowly becomes acceptance.

We’re all tired of the culture of MORE. Do less. Be less. Let’s go back to living comfortably, and focusing on how we feel.

This year broke me.

After months of work and considerable personal triumphs, I found myself back on the ground again. My entire career being swallowed by AI. A food crisis as my financial wellness dropped cataclysmically. Bombs, broken men, fire, flood. My sacred space sank into the ground. There was no place of safety in my life. And I felt it.

I asked why, and no answers came. I was too tired to find my way to the higher path. Everything crumbled in front of me.

But that’s the work.

Women walk forward when things crumble. We begin again. We strap babies to our backs and turn dust into fields. This is the work that we have done since time time and it remains in our hands now.

We carry civilization forward.

So we leave this reality behind, bit by bit, step by step away from a world that is diseased and contagious. We go back to the world that was balanced. We give. We serve. We heal. We create.

A year of horrors lies behind us, and more likely lie ahead. Step around them as gracefully as you can. Lean on others when you need to. But you need to move forward. You need to help the world begin again.

Happy Birthday to my bestseller baby, SANCTUARY.

One year ago, in this very place, I achieved my longest-held dream and became a published author. I did it while going through a divorce, while homeschooling my son, while giving my daughter a new life. I did it exhausted and grouchy and spent. But I did it because I believed the story that had been given to me was important to someone, somewhere.

It was only by publishing it that I understood.

Because readers told me they saw themselves in Elizabeth. Mothers of special kids who are always, always on guard. Women in wasted marriages, fantasizing of freedom but scared to do it on their own. Lonely introverts who wished they, too, could stumble into a small town in New England and find belonging.

The people who needed Solace Spring. A sanctuary.

SANCTUARY is the first of many books, but she is the first. Thank you to everyone who placed her on your shelf, in a shop or at home, and made a place for my story in yours. 🤍
