I’m back.
I took a proper break from social media, and somewhere along the way I swapped some of that time for therapy.
Genuinely, one of the best decisions I’ve made in years.
Not because everything was falling apart. Quite the opposite. I wanted to understand myself better, take stock of what was working in my life and what wasn’t, and get an honest perspective from someone who wasn’t personally involved in any of it.
What it’s given me is real clarity. It’s helped me recognise the things that are mine to work on, but equally, the things that aren’t mine to carry.
And I think that’s something more men should be talking about.
We often treat therapy as something you turn to when you’ve reached breaking point. But you don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from talking to somebody. Sometimes you don’t even realise what you’ve been carrying until you actually start talking about it.
We put so much emphasis on training, nutrition, sleep and looking after our bodies. I think looking after our minds deserves exactly the same attention.
Mental health and physical health aren’t two completely separate things. For me, they’re part of the same picture. Looking after both gives us a much better chance of feeling good, functioning well and actually enjoying our lives.
And yes, as BT used to tell us, it’s good to talk.
Whether that’s therapy, a friend, or simply starting a conversation you’ve been avoiding, talking is a pretty good place to start.
