💜 National Volunteers' Week | 1st–7th June 💜

This week marks the start of National Volunteers' Week, and we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible people who make The Glowsticks Project possible.

What many people don't see is that behind every support session, every coffee served, every funding application, every safeguarding concern, every event, every social media post, every repair, every piece of paperwork, and every young person's success story... there are volunteers.

Our Senior Leadership Team and Trustees remain 100% voluntary, giving hundreds — and in reality, thousands — of hours each year to ensure autistic and neurodivergent children, young people and adults have opportunities to learn, grow and belong.

Alongside them are our amazing volunteers, support workers, chefs, parents, community champions and supporters who regularly go above and beyond, often giving their time freely because they believe in what we do.

From a small idea to an award-winning charity supporting hundreds of families, Glowsticks has been built on kindness, dedication and people who care.

To every single person who has volunteered with us over the years:

✨ Thank you for your time. ✨ Thank you for your energy. ✨ Thank you for your belief in our mission. ✨ Thank you for helping us create a world where neurodivergent people can thrive.
This week, we celebrate you. 💜

💚 A Little Reminder About Autism Acceptance 💚

Today I was out shopping with my son when something happened that has stayed with me all day.

My son is autistic. Like many autistic people, he stims. At the moment, one of his stims is repeatedly licking his lips and the skin just underneath them.

I spotted a melon lip balm in a shop and asked if he'd like to try it. Before he even had chance to answer, a member of staff pointed at him and loudly said:
"So you'll stop doing THAT!"

I explained that he is autistic and that it's a stim. The response was a tut and a walk away.
What upset me wasn't that someone didn't understand autism. Not everyone does.

What upset me was watching my son immediately look down at his shoes, his confidence disappearing in an instant, looking as though he was trying not to cry.

Here's the thing about stimming:

For autistic people, stimming isn't "bad behaviour". It isn't being naughty. It isn't something done to annoy others.

Stimming can help with anxiety, sensory regulation, concentration, excitement, stress, communication and emotional regulation. It helps many autistic people feel safe in a world that often feels overwhelming.

Before commenting on a child's behaviour, please remember that you may not know the reason behind it.

A few words that seem insignificant to an adult can stay with a child for a very long time.

At The Glowsticks Project, we spend every day supporting autistic and ADHD children, young people and adults. We know that true acceptance isn't just about awareness days and social media posts.

It's found in the everyday moments.
The moment you choose kindness over judgement.
The moment you choose understanding over criticism.
The moment you remember that being different is not something to be ashamed of.

🌟 WE'RE HIRING 🌟

**Support & Skills Development Worker**

📍 Middlesbrough
🕒 24 Hours Per Week
📅 Closing Date: 15th June 2026

The Glowsticks Project is looking for a passionate, motivated and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant or experienced Support Worker to join our growing team.

We support autistic young people and adults, and individuals with ADHD and co-occurring learning disabilities, to develop confidence, independence, employability skills and brighter futures.

Before you apply, it's important to understand that this is not a traditional support worker role.

Our young people and adults aren't sitting in a classroom completing worksheets all day, and they aren't passive recipients of support.

This is a fast-paced catering and community environment where staff are expected to work on a 4:1 support ratio while supporting people to serve real customers, prepare real food, achieve real qualifications and work towards meaningful employment opportunities.

It's rewarding, inspiring and often brilliant fun.

It's also hard work.

Our entire catering team is neurodivergent and has additional needs. They run the show - not us.

We are not recruiting catering assistants - we are recruiting people who can teach, coach, encourage, support and empower others to succeed.

# # # Essential Requirements

✅ A minimum of 1 year's experience supporting autistic individuals in either a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, SEND, education or support work setting.

✅ A strong understanding of autism and neurodiversity.

✅ The ability to adapt your communication and support style to meet individual needs.

✅ A positive, proactive and solution-focused attitude.

✅ A trauma-informed approach to support.

Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants and SEND Practitioners are strongly encouraged to apply.

**Experienced Support Workers will also be considered based on their skills, experience and knowledge**, particularly where they can demonstrate a strong track record of supporting autistic individuals and people with ADHD and learning disabilities.

We're looking for someone who:

⭐ Believes in high expectations and genuine inclusion

⭐ Is patient, kind, reliable and resilient

⭐ Can build confidence, independence and life skills

⭐ Communicates effectively and works well as part of a team

⭐ Understands that support is about enabling people to do things for themselves, not doing things for them

⭐ Wants to make a genuine difference in people's lives

# # # Our Recruitment Process

Successful applicants will first be invited to an interview with our Senior Leadership Team, including our Founder, Rebecca, and our volunteer HR Manager, Phill.

Applicants who are successful at interview will then be invited to complete a 4-hour trial shift, consisting of:

☕ 2 hours within our busy charity café

🥖 2 hours within our bakery

During this time, you will shadow one of our experienced Support Workers and gain a genuine insight into what life at Glowsticks is really like.

This is a vital part of our recruitment process. It allows us to assess whether you are the right fit for our team, but equally importantly, it allows you to decide whether Glowsticks is the right environment for you.

The role can be challenging, fast-paced and unpredictable - however, it is also exceptionally rewarding.

Our young people and adults are some of the most incredible people you will ever meet. They will make you laugh, challenge your thinking, celebrate their achievements with you and continually remind you why this work matters.

If you're looking for a role where you'll help people discover what they are capable of, celebrate achievements and be part of something truly special, we'd love to hear from you.

📧 To apply, please email your CV and a covering letter to:

[email protected]

📅 **Closing Date: 15th June 2026**

Enhanced DBS checks and references will be required.

💚 Because at Glowsticks, support isn't about doing things for people.

It's about helping people realise they can do them for themselves.

Support Worker Bobby: "So what's the plan today then?"

Anthony: "Well firstly, we're going to make some incredible food..."

Bobby: 👍

Anthony: "...then I'm going to become an Apprentice Commis Chef."

Bobby: 👍👍

Anthony: "...and eventually take over the world."

Support Worker Bobby: 🤔

Huge congratulations to Anthony, who is officially starting his Apprentice Commis Chef journey with Middlesbrough College! 👨‍🍳✨

We're incredibly proud of him and excited to see what comes next. From volunteering at Glowsticks to taking this huge step into professional catering, Anthony continues to prove that with the right opportunities, support and determination, amazing things can happen. ❤️

Here he is chatting with Support Worker Bobby, who has been supporting and encouraging him on his journey.

And if you'd like to support Anthony too, why not pop into Breadsticks Bakery today and treat yourself to some of his incredible bakes? 🥧🍞✨

Just don't encourage the world domination plans... we're still discussing those.

Just a friendly reminder that the benefit drop-in will be held at the Cafe tomorrow with Cheryl between 12 and 4 pm. Feel free to come by, say hello, and ask any questions you may have. Since it's a drop-in session, it won't be suitable for completing benefit application forms, as these require a longer appointment and the cafe may be busy as it is half term.

However, we can arrange a dedicated appointment for that tomorrow if needed. Thank you!
