NECK & SHOULDER PAIN? 👇

When your neck or shoulders feel tight, stiff or uncomfortable, the area that hurts isn't always the only area worth looking at.
During an assessment, I may look at things such as:

- Neck movement and range of motion
- Shoulder movement and function
- Posture
- Areas of muscular tension or restriction
- What movements or activities aggravate your symptoms

Depending on what I find, hands-on treatment may involve areas such as the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, scalenes, pectoral muscles and upper back.

Rather than simply massaging where it hurts, treatment is tailored to your individual presentation and what I find during the assessment.

LOWER BACK PAIN? I’VE GOT YOUR BACK! 👇

The muscles around your lower back, pelvis and hips all work together during everyday movement.
Depending on the individual, assessment may involve looking at areas such as:
- QL & erector spinae
- Glutes
- Hip flexors
- Hamstrings
- Quadriceps & adductors

Why?
Because your lower back doesn't work in isolation. The way the hips, pelvis and surrounding muscles move and manage load can all form part of the wider picture.
That doesn't mean one “tight” muscle is automatically causing your lower back pain.

It means that when someone comes to me with lower back pain, I don't want to simply massage the painful area.

My approach is assessment-led. I want to understand:

- Where are your symptoms?
- How are you moving?
- Which movements aggravate or ease it?
- Are there relevant restrictions or differences around the hips and pelvis?
- What is the problem stopping you from doing?

Then treatment can be tailored to what the assessment actually finds.

Neck pain or stiffness?

Tension around the base of the skull can contribute to discomfort, restricted movement and a feeling of tightness through the neck.
The suboccipital muscles are a small group of muscles located at the base of the skull. During treatment, I may assess and work with this area alongside other relevant structures of the neck and shoulders, depending on what I find.
Treatment is always tailored to the individual, with movement reassessed where appropriate.

Level 5: Weekend 5, Day 1 complete! 📚💪

Another great practical day continuing my Level 5 Clinical Sports & Remedial Massage training.

Today we focused on Muscle Energy Techniques (MET), specifically Reciprocal Inhibition (RI): learning how controlled muscle contractions can be used to help reduce muscular tension and improve movement.
Plenty of hands-on practice, assessment and clinical reasoning throughout the day, with more to come tomorrow.

Every weekend is another step towards developing a more clinical and purposeful approach to treatment.
