Coping can look different for everyone and sometimes we might use one strategy for one experience and another strategy for something else.

Over the next week, we are exploring a variety of coping strategies. Some you may be familiar with and others you may like to consider trying if you feel they'll be helpful to you.

Theres no right or wrong way to cope. What's important is that when we are coping with difficult experiences, we do what we need to feel safe and survive, and accept with compassion, that it might not always be the way we would choose to cope if our circumstances were different 💞

We've all experienced times when our inner critic pops up to tell us we didn't do well or that we're not good enough. When we notice that part of ourselves popping up in our thoughts or speech it is a great time to be curious about self-love and self-soothing. These are skills we are rarely taught and yet can have a profound impact on our ability to cope with the challenges life throws in our direction. I wonder what self-soothing techniques you have found to be most helpful and whether others might value hearing from you? ❤️

Theres no right or wrong way to cope. What's important is that when we are coping with difficult experiences, we do what we need to feel safe and survive, and accept with compassion, that it might not always be the way we would choose to cope if our circumstances were different 💞

Most of us have been taught not to express our emotions. Instead we were told to keep a stiff upper lip. Whilst this is a successful coping strategy to help us survive some situations, what we might find is our emotions find other ways to express ourselves. This might be physical health related or perhaps we suddenly burst into tears at the most unexpected and inconvenient of moments.

Processing our emotions through expression in a safe space can help us to validate how we feel and hold compassion for ourselves. 💞

Grounding and mindfulness can feel like something out of reach for many people. However, we often already incorporate mindfulness into our lives without realising. For example, when we play a game or follow a recipe during cooking. I wonder what other activities you carry out that leave you realising you've had a break from feeling anxious or overwhelmed? Some may surprise you 🥰

Distraction can be really helpful when we need a break from intense emotions and thoughts. I wonder if there are other ideas you use that others may find helpful to know about?

You don't need to struggle alone 🌿

Human biology is deeply social, our immune systems, autonomic nervous systems, and overall mental well-being are physically regulated by the presence of caring, supportive connections. When we get disconnected, we suffer.

I am absolutely thrilled to share a personal update: I have almost completed my doctorate in counselling psychology! 🎉🎓 No more university lectures, No more placements, no more assignments, no more thesis, just one final assessment in September.

With this milestone, I am expanding my private practice working days and have new availability opening up for clients.

My practice is gently integrative, bringing together cognitive behavioral skills with the profound, de-shaming principles of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), creative relational therapy, and even solution focused hypnotherapy, plus so much more.

If you are ready to explore transitioning from a mind that is constantly at war with itself to one that is more accepting, courageous, and wise, I would be honored to walk alongside you.

💞 Gift yourself the time to grow 🌱

Growth is not always loud or obvious. Sometimes it looks like placing one small step in front of the other, showing yourself compassion when you have noticed you being critical about yourself, or choosing to keep going when life feels challenging.

Be gentle with yourself as you heal, learn and grow, you are doing the best you can and that can look different on different days 🌸

Do you believe that if you stop being hard on yourself, you’ll lose your edge and/or fail? 🥊
This is one of the most common blocks to self-compassion. Many of us use an "inner bully" or "inner critic" to drive ourselves forward.

But neuroimaging studies confirm that hostile self-criticism stimulates the exact same threat networks in your brain as if you were being physically attacked by someone else! It floods your body with stress hormones and actually reduces your motivation and resilience.

Compassionate self-correction is like a wise, encouraging teacher. It doesn't ignore your mistakes or let you "off the hook." Instead, it looks at your failures with extreme honesty, but asks with kindness: "What went wrong, and how can I support you to do better next time?"

You deserve an inner guide, not an inner attacker.

My private practice offers an integrative approach to help you soften self-criticism and build compassionate strength. Click the link in my bio to check my current weekly openings 💬
