Earwax and Heat 👂☀️

Have you noticed your ears feeling more blocked when it’s hot? 🌡️👂
You’re not imagining it—heat can make earwax softer and more likely to cause that “blocked” feeling. Stay cool and keep your ears happy this summer!

• Heat and humidity can stimulate the glands in your ear canal, causing them to produce more
wax.

• Increased sweating can soften existing wax, causing it to clump together or become impacted.

• More frequent use of earphones, earplugs or hearing aids - common during travel or outdoor activities can push wax deeper into the ear canal.

• Swimming or water exposure can cause wax to swell and block the ear, especially if it’s already partially built up.

If you feel your ears are blocked, pain, itchy, reduced hearing, ring or buzzing in the ears you can book and Earwax removal or Ear health check

Dont forget your ear prep before running 👂🏃

Most people before they participate in a marathon prep they bodies and minds but forget about their ears.

Running can cause earwax to shift, build up, or harden, leading to temporary muffled hearing, discomfort, or blockage. Increased sweat production, which mixes with earwax, and the physical vibration of running can push wax against the eardrum. Using earbuds while running often aggravates this, pushing wax deeper into the canal.

👂Why Running Affects Earwax:

✨Sweat Production: The ear contains sweat glands that, along with oil glands, produce cerumen (earwax). Increased sweating from running can increase the amount of wax.

✨Vibration and Movement: The motion of running can cause existing, loose earwax to move and consolidate, creating a plug, especially if the ear canal is narrow.

✨Earbud Use: Wearing earplugs or earphones while running can push wax deeper into the ear canal, causing compaction.

✨Temporary Swelling/Eustachian Tubes: Running can cause temporary swelling of the Eustachian tubes, which, combined with wax, can lead to a feeling of fullness or “plugged” ears.

👂Management and Tips:

✨Avoid Cotton Swabs: Do not use cotton buds/swabs, as they push earwax deeper and can cause impaction.

✨Let It Be: Normal earwax will fall out on its own.
Use Ear Drops: If you have frequent build-up, use olive or almond oil drops (3-4 times a day for 3-5 days) to soften the wax.

✨See a Professional: If you experience significant, persistent, or painful blockage

If you experience pain, dizziness, or severe muffled hearing or ringing or buzzing that lasts for more than a day, it is recommended to see a professional, as it could indicate an infection or a severe wax impaction.

GOOD LUCK 🍀 to everyone that is competing next week

👂Smallest bone in the Human Body👂

The smallest individual bone is the stapes, which measures only 2-3 mm, roughly the size of a grain rice.
Even though they are very small the malleus, incus, and stapes play an important role in hearing.
They are located in the middle ear and are known as the ossicles.
The malleus receives sound vibrations from the eardrum.
The incus passes these vibrations to the stapes.
The stapes then sends the vibrations into the inner ear, allowing us to hear sounds clearly.

👂 Healthy Ears are Happy Ears 👂

Maintaining healthy ears is essential for overall well being, as they serve as the primary sensory organ for hearing and balance.

Here is why it is important to have healthy ears:

COMMUNICATION and SOCIAL CONNECTION

✨ Preventing isolation: Good hearing is the foundation of effective conversations. Untreated hearing loss can lead to communication frustration, social withdrawal and loneliness.

✨ Cognitive Health: Healthy hearing keeps the brain engaged. When hearing declines the brain must work harder to process sound, which can lead to cognitive decline, memory loss and a higher risk of dementia.

✨ Mental Well Being: There is a strong link between poor ear health and mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

SAFETY AND AWARENESS

✨ Environment Awareness: Ears help you detect crucial sounds, such as traffic, alarms or sirens.

✨Balance and Stability: The inner ear contains the vestibular system, which is critical for maintaining balance. Healthy ears reduce the risk of dizziness, vertigo and dangerous falls.

👂Simple Tips For Healthy Ears 👂

• NEVER use cotton buds: These push wax deeper, causing blockages and potential damage

• Use 60/60 Rule: Listen to music at no more than 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes

• Wear ear protection: Use earplugs in loud environments such as concerts or when using power tools

• Get regular check ups: Adults should have their
ears checked especially at the age of 50 and above.
