I've just posted my first Substack piece and wanted to share it here because most of you are the people I wrote it for.

It's about that moment before class when a student discloses something complex and then saunters off to their mat and waits. And what it's like to stand at the front of the room not knowing what to do with that.

I'm writing for yoga teachers who've been in that moment.

Osteopath, yoga teacher, and clinic director. I write about the gap between what 200-hour training produces and what real students need. And quietly building something for teachers who want to go deeper. Click to read Aimee Osteo Yoga on Substack. Launched 19 days ago.

Hi Lovely Teachers, I am just setting up a new substack account and would love for you to subscribe, I plan on using it to write some thoughts about teaching yoga beyond doing a 200 hours teacher training course and my experience as a Yoga teacher who became an Osteopath

STRIKING STATISTIC: 80% of adults will experience back pain during their lifetime.

The WHO reports that low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide. That means in your yoga class of 15 students, 12 will likely deal with back pain at some point.

As yoga teachers, we have a powerful opportunity to help—if we have the right knowledge.

My "Demystifying Low Back Pain" workshop (April 27th) bridges the gap between anatomy and practical teaching:

• Learn the tiered instruction method that works for ALL bodies
• Master specific modifications for common back conditions
• Build confidence in helping, not harming, your students

With 20 years as both an osteopath and yoga teacher, I've developed approaches that actually work.

I've spent two decades exploring the intersection of evidence-based care and yoga philosophy. What I've discovered is remarkable - they're actually speaking the same truth in different languages. This insight completely transformed how I approach teaching students with back pain.

In our April 27th "Demystifying Low Back Pain" workshop, you'll experience this powerful integration:

- How ahimsa (non-harming) perfectly aligns with modern pain science to reduce fear and create appropriate modifications

- Why satya (truthfulness) helps us move beyond outdated cues like "flatten your spine" or "push through it"

- The way svadhyaya (self-study) creates the same mindful awareness that evidence-based assessment requires

- How santosha (contentment) supports finding the optimal challenge level – not too much, not too little

This isn't philosophy OR science – it's the beautiful integration of both traditions to create truly effective teaching. Throughout Sunday's workshop, we'll explore numerous fascinating intersections between these seemingly opposite approaches, discovering how they complement and reinforce each other to form the bedrock of intelligent, compassionate yoga instruction for back pain.

Beyond "Magic Poses": The Reality of Teaching Yoga for Back Pain

Common Misconception Alert!
Many yoga teachers believe there's a specific set of "magic poses" that treat particular back issues. The reality is far more nuanced and powerful.

Effective yoga application for back pain isn't about memorising which poses to use for which conditions. It's about understanding the *purpose* behind each pose and skillfully adapting it to meet your student's pain level and capabilities in that moment.

In our workshop, you'll learn:

• How to assess what a student needs today (which might be different from last week)
• The biomechanical purpose behind key poses so you can modify them effectively
• Techniques for managing multiple adaptations simultaneously in a group setting
• Building a teaching mindset that prioritizes function over form

This approach gives you sustainable teaching skills that work across conditions and student populations - far more valuable than a list of "poses for diagnoses."

The workshop equips you with a flexible clinical reasoning framework that allows you to make real-time decisions with confidence.

Highlight Workshop Module: "Spinal Anatomy & Biomechanics"

Wouldn't we all want to feel as comfortable, as this version of downward dog looks?

How often have you taught Downward Dog without understanding its potential impact on the lower back?

Many yoga teachers don't realise that this common pose can actually compress the L4/L5 vertebrae for certain students, especially those with existing back issues.

When students with tight hamstrings push their heels toward the floor, they often compensate by flexing from the lower back instead of the hips. This creates a "hinge point" that can concentrates force around the L4/L5 junction - already the most common site for disc herniations.

Add strained pelvic positioning and improper weight distribution by pushing through your arms, and you have a recipe for potentially worsening common lumbar spine issues wuch as disc bulges, herniations, or facet joint irritation.

In our workshop, Aimee draws on her osteopathic expertise to teach you:

▪️ The biomechanics of how common poses affect spinal structures
▪️ How to identify when students are compensating in harmful ways
▪️ Specific modifications that maintain space in the lumbar spine
▪️ Which conditions may require avoiding certain poses entirely

This isn't abstract theory—it's practical knowledge that transforms how you teach all students, not just those with diagnosed back pain.

Learn to adapt for all students - LAST SPACE LEFT!
