More than 100 SAS doctors and dentists from across Wales came together at the HEIW SAS Doctors’ and Dentists’ Conference for a day of learning, collaboration and professional development.

The event provided opportunities to hear from expert speakers, explore the latest developments in healthcare, and share experiences with colleagues from a wide range of specialties.

Sessions focused on leadership, wellbeing, career development and clinical practice, helping delegates develop practical skills and insights that can be applied within their own teams and services.

By investing in the development of the SAS workforce, we are helping to strengthen healthcare teams, supporting professional growth to improve experiences and outcomes for patients across Wales.

Following the success of this year’s event, a further online conference is planned later this year, with another in-person event expected next year.

🤖 Did you know that colleagues across NHS Wales can learn about AI by using AI?

At 2026 this week, we were proud to showcase some of the exciting work taking place in Wales.

Working with colleagues from Cardiff University, we explored how artificial intelligence (AI) could support learning and development across health and care and demonstrated HALI, our AI-powered learning mentor, and GWEN, our genomics AI mentor.

Visitors to our stand had the opportunity to try the tools for themselves and join conversations about how technology can help equip the workforce with the skills and confidence needed for the future.
A huge thank you to everyone who visited the stand, joined the discussion and shared their ideas and experiences.

If you have an NHS Wales email address, you can access HALI free of charge through Y TĹ· Dysgu, HEIW's national learning platform.

Have you tried HALI yet? We'd love to hear what you think.

Pleased to share that the “Building a Multi-Professional Radiotherapy Workforce” collaboration has won the Working Together Achievement Award at the Moondance Awards Wales 🎉

Announced at the awards ceremony on 11 June 2026, this recognition celebrates a truly national effort across NHS Wales to strengthen the radiotherapy workforce and improve access to timely cancer treatment.

This work brings together partners from Velindre University NHS Trust, HEIW, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Swansea Bay NHS University Health Board, alongside Advancing Radiotherapy Cymru and the Velindre Oncology Academy. It’s a fantastic example of what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared purpose -pooling expertise, redesigning ways of working, and building a more flexible, sustainable workforce for the future.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved. This award reflects the strength of collaboration and the positive impact this work is having on patient care across Wales 👏

Everyone is talking about AI in healthcare.

But as Dr Alex Aubrey points out, the real challenge is helping the workforce use it safely, confidently and effectively in day-to-day practice.

“At NHS ConfedExpo 2026, we’ll be sharing practical examples of AI-enabled learning tools already being used across NHS Wales - including AI mentors, scenario-based learning and workforce support approaches designed around real clinical need.

This session is about practical implementation, honest learning and ideas organisations can take back to their own teams.”

Wednesday 10 June | 2pm
AI Theatre

After the session, Alex and the team will also be at HEIW Stand G68 for live demos and conversations.
