I’ve been reading Embracing Uncertainty by Susan Jeffers.
Uncertainty is something many of us find challenging, myself included.
Most people think:
* I’ll relax when I know the outcome.
* I’ll feel confident when I know it will work.
* I’ll feel secure when everything is sorted.
This book argues that life never gives us that guarantee. There’s always another uncertainty waiting around the corner. Which we all know really don’t we? Yet the search for certainty show up still through:
Overthinking decisions
Constant reassurance seeking
Difficulty taking action
Perfectionism
Control
People pleasing
Avoidance
Future tripping
Constantly asking:
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“What if I regret it?”
“What if something goes wrong?”
Trying to solve problems that don’t yet exist and difficulty trusting yourself.
Instead, she encourages developing what she calls a deeper trust in yourself and your ability to handle whatever happens.
Uncertainty is not the problem. Our resistance to uncertainty is.
When we stop fighting the fact that life is uncertain, we free up a huge amount of energy.
