The South London Diabetic Eye Screening Programme and Merton Integrated Learning Disability Team recently hosted our first joint Learning Disability Diabetic Eye Screening event at Nelson Health Centre.

The session enabled valuable collaboration to provide tailored support for people with learning disabilities, with strong engagement from carers throughout. It fostered learning, community connection, and meaningful feedback to help improve service accessibility.

Thank you to the Merton Integrated Learning Disability Team for their vital contribution, our screener Bartholomew for his expertise, and our Communications Officer, Programme Manager, and Clinical Lead for delivering an insightful and engaging presentation.

Eight in ten people living with diabetes report experiencing negative perceptions ranging from judgemental attitudes and generalisations to blame and shame.

This is known as diabetes stigma, and it has significant and harmful consequences for millions of individuals.

We are therefore committed to a ‘Strike Out Stigma’ initiative. Our objective is to reinforce that diabetes is not a personal choice, nor is it an individual failing.

Testimonial Tuesday is here! 🎉

The feedback speaks for itself!

'Thanks again to the team at Nelson Medical Centre for carrying out this important screening so efficiently - Nelson Health Centre (14/05)

'The screener was very professional and spoke very softly and was very polite. She gave an excellent service – Cricket Green (23/05)

A huge thank-you to everyone who takes the time to share their feedback after their appointment. Your input truly means the world to us and helps us continue delivering the best care possible.

Since October 2023, the screening interval for diabetic eye screening in England has changed for people at lower risk. If your last two screenings (Routine Digital Screening pathway only) have shown no signs of diabetic retinopathy, you may be invited for screening every 2 years instead of every year, in line with expert guidance confirming this is safe.

However, there are some exceptions. You may still need annual screening if you:

• Are taking GLP-1 medication for weight loss
• Are using an insulin pump

If this applies to you and you would like your screening interval reviewed, please contact us at:

8 days to go!

We’re just 8 days away from our first Learning Disability Diabetic Eye Screening event an important step in improving access to vital screening services and supporting better health outcomes within our communities.

This initial event is focused on supporting specialist service users in the Merton community, with the ambition to expand and deliver similar tailored screening opportunities across all the boroughs we serve.

The countdown is on! 🙌
We look forward to welcoming our service users, carers, and community nursing partners for a meaningful day of collaboration, learning, and connection.
