🚨 RIDER MYTH: “If my back hurts, I should just rest.”

Sometimes rest is appropriate — particularly after an injury or when symptoms are severe.

But for many everyday aches and stiffness, complete inactivity isn’t necessarily the answer.

Your body generally benefits from appropriate movement, gradually building strength and addressing the factors contributing to your symptoms.

And importantly…

Pain is worth paying attention to.

If something keeps coming back every time you ride, don’t simply accept it as “part of being a rider.”

Get it assessed so you can understand what’s going on and what your options are.

🐴 Your horse can tell when you’re tense.

Think about what happens when you’re nervous:

Your shoulders rise.
Your grip changes.
Your breathing changes.
Your muscles tighten.
Your movement becomes less fluid.

Your horse responds to those changes.

That’s why rider body awareness is so important.

Improving your own mobility, strength and control isn’t just about avoiding aches and pains — it can help you become a more balanced, confident partner for your horse.

Healthy rider + healthy horse = better partnership. ❤️

🐴 Before you get on your horse, check these 3 things first!

As a chiropractor, I see many riders dealing with aches and pains that start before they even get in the saddle. Take 30 seconds to check:

* Your posture – Stand tall, shoulders relaxed, and make sure you’re not already leaning to one side.
* Your hips – Notice if one hip feels tighter or stiffer than the other. Uneven hips can affect your balance and your horse’s movement.
* Your lower back – Take a gentle bend and twist. If you feel sharp pain, significant stiffness, or discomfort, address it before riding.

A quick body check can help you ride more comfortably, improve balance in the saddle, and reduce the risk of strain for both you and your horse. 🐎✨

Ride straight. Ride balanced. Ride well.

🐴 Core awareness for horse riders

Your core is more than your abs — it’s the support system that helps you stay balanced, move with your horse, and protect your back while riding.

Before you mount, try this quick check:

✨ Stand tall
✨ Gently draw your lower tummy in as if fastening a belt one notch tighter
✨ Breathe normally (don’t hold your breath!)
✨ Notice if your ribs, pelvis, and shoulders feel stacked and balanced

When your core is awake and working, you’re more likely to:

✔ Sit deeper in the saddle
✔ Improve stability through transitions
✔ Reduce tension in the lower back and hips
✔ Communicate more clearly with your horse

A strong rider isn’t the one who grips harder — it’s the one who can stay soft, stable, and connected through the middle.

Take 10 seconds before every ride to switch your core on and feel the difference. 🐎💫

🎒 3 Things to Check Before Going Back to School ✏️📚

Before the school routine starts again, take 2 minutes to check these three things that can make a big difference to your child’s comfort and posture.

1️⃣ Backpack fit

• The bag should sit close to the back
• Use both shoulder straps
• The bottom of the backpack should sit around the waistline, not hanging low
• Aim to keep it as light as possible

2️⃣ Screen setup

Homework, tablets, and laptops often mean extra screen time.

✔️ Screen at eye level
✔️ Sit with feet supported
✔️ Encourage regular movement breaks

3️⃣ Posture check

Ask your child to stand tall.

Look for:
✔️ Head over shoulders
✔️ Shoulders relaxed
✔️ Even weight through both feet

If your child is complaining of neck pain, back pain, headaches, or feeling stiff after school, it may be worth having their posture and movement assessed.

A quick back-to-school check today can help set them up for a healthier, more comfortable school year tomorrow! 🌟

📞 Contact our clinic if you’d like a posture or movement assessment before the new term starts.

⚽🏃‍♀️ SPORTY KIDS NEED CHIRO CARE TOO! 🏀🤸‍♂️

Active kids put a lot of demand on their growing bodies. Whether they play football, dance, swim, rugby, gymnastics, or athletics, training and competition can sometimes lead to aches, tight muscles, and movement imbalances.

Common signs a sporty child may benefit from an assessment include:

✔️ Neck or back discomfort
✔️ Tight hamstrings or shoulders
✔️ Pain after training or matches
✔️ Recurrent sprains or strains
✔️ Reduced flexibility or movement
✔️ Headaches related to tension or posture
✔️ Complaints that they feel “stiff” or sore

Chiropractic care for children is gentle and tailored to their age and activity level. We assess posture, movement, muscle tension, and joint function with the goal of supporting comfortable movement and helping active kids stay active.

💡 We also provide advice on warm-ups, stretching, recovery, posture, backpack use, and healthy movement habits.

Because growing bodies are constantly changing, regular check-ins can be helpful for some active children and teenagers.

🚩 If your child has severe pain, significant swelling, a suspected fracture, weakness, numbness, concussion symptoms, or a serious injury, please seek medical attention promptly.

Strong. Active. Growing. Let’s help keep them moving well! 💪

📱 SCREEN TIME = SPINE TIME 💻

Every hour spent looking down at a phone, tablet, or laptop is also time your child’s neck, shoulders, and spine are working harder.

When we bend our heads forward, the load on the neck increases significantly. Over time, this may contribute to:

• Neck and shoulder tension
• Headaches 🤕
• Rounded shoulders
• Poor posture
• Upper back discomfort

💡 Try the 20-20-20 posture break:
Every 20 minutes, have your child look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and gently sit tall.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

✔️ Hold screens at eye level
✔️ Sit with feet supported
✔️ Take regular movement breaks
✔️ Stretch the neck and shoulders
✔️ Limit long periods of uninterrupted screen use

Healthy screen habits today can help support a healthier spine tomorrow. 🌱

If your child is complaining of neck pain, headaches, or posture-related discomfort, we’re happy to help assess whether spinal or muscle tension may be playing a role.

When might a child see a chiropractor? 👧👦

Many parents are surprised to learn that children can experience aches, pains, and posture-related issues too. Chiropractic care for children is gentle and tailored to their age and stage of development.

Some common reasons parents bring their child for an assessment include:

✔️ Neck or back discomfort
✔️ Poor posture from schoolwork, tablets, phones, or gaming 🎮📱
✔️ Sports-related aches and strains ⚽🏃‍♀️
✔️ Frequent tension headaches 🤕
✔️ Growing pains or general muscle tightness
✔️ Discomfort after a fall or minor injury
✔️ Stiffness or reduced movement in the neck, back, or shoulders

During a visit, we assess posture, movement, muscle tension, and overall function. Our goal is to support comfort, mobility, and healthy movement habits as children grow.

💡 We also spend time discussing simple strategies such as posture, backpack use, stretching, sleep habits, and activity levels that may help keep kids feeling their best.

🚩 Chiropractic care is not a substitute for medical care. If your child has severe pain, fever, unexplained symptoms, significant injury, weakness, numbness, or other concerning signs, please seek medical attention promptly.

How heavy should your child’s school bag be?

The recommendation is that your child should be wearing less that 10-15% of their body weight on their back, but often I see children with super full bags which are weighing them down. Young spines aren’t fully developed and carrying bags which are too heavy on a daily basis can be a recipe for problems.

There are some things that you can do to help, such as removing any unnecessary items and planning the heavy things closer to the body to make them easier to carry. We’ve put together this little checklist which can help to make sure huge child isn’t carrying too much.

We have some printouts in clinic so feel free to pop in or grab one when you’re at your next appointment ❤️
