ITāS NEVER āJUSTā A MASSAGE
Sometimes itās a chance to offload, to breathe, to let go. As therapists, we might be engaging in your conversation but do not underestimate our abilities to multi-task š
We are always noticing, observing, feeling and working on how you present to us. Weāre constantly mentally making notes of areas needing attention and our touch.
Recently Iāve noticed more and more of what we would refer to as global muscular guarding. This shows up as globally resistant tissue with very limited movement. Almost as if the body is braced for impact, like youāre wearing armour with tissues that are resistant to yielding.
Your back feels solid from top to bottom. Your muscles are braced.
Even gentle rocking creates almost no movement.
And sometimes it can take 30, 40, even 45 minutes or longer before we begin to feel that body soften beneath our hands.
Thatās why, for me, massage has never been just about muscles.
Itās safety.
Itās warmth.
Stillness.
Safe, predictable touch.
A slower breath.
A space where nothing is being asked of you.
Gradually, something changes.
Your shoulders lower.
Your breathing deepens.
Your body becomes heavier against the couch.
Your tissues begin to yield.
Not because weāve forced them to relax.
But because weāve given them the time and conditions in which relaxation can happen.
We canāt know from touch alone why somebodyās body is holding tension. There can be many physical, lifestyle and emotional contributors.
But we can listen to what is beneath our hands.
Because your body is always talking.
And sometimes massage gives it the space to finally exhale. šæ
