Brain Scan Research Confirms Reflexology Affects Multiple Areas of the Brain

Dr. Stefan Posse, a researcher at the University of New Mexico, presented groundbreaking functional MRI (fMRI) findings on the “Neural Pathways of Applied Reflexology” at the International Society for Medical Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) Annual Meeting in Cape Town on May 12, 2026.

The research maps brain activity during foot reflexology to understand what happens in the brain in real time while reflexology was being applied and neurological impact in patients with stroke. Advanced MRI technology was used.

What They Found in Healthy People

Scans revealed distinctly different activation patterns for different reflex areas. Importantly, the brain responses weren’t limited to just the foot area of the brain — multiple regions were activated. One area that consistently responded was the supramarginal gyrus, a part of the brain packed with “mirror neurons,” which are linked to empathy, learning, and body awareness.

For the first time showed reflexology technique applied to different reflexology reflex areas activates different areas and networks of the brain in healthy controls and stroke patients.

What They Found in Stroke Patients

In people who had suffered a stroke, the brain activation looked different — more one-sided — and varied depending on whether the left or right foot was worked. Following the application of reflex stimuli, patients demonstrated increased two-point discrimination and improved sensorimotor function in their hemiplegic hands.

Who Is Behind the Research

The team is led by Dr. Posse and includes well-known reflexology educators Barbara and Kevin Kunz, graduate student Arthur Schoen, and researchers from the University of Minnesota.

What Comes Next

The team is now expanding the study to better understand the timing of brain responses during reflexology and to identify exactly which brain networks are involved in stroke recovery.

In short: this research is building scientific evidence that reflexology creates specific, measurable responses in the brain — and may play a meaningful role in stroke rehabilitation.

Looking forward to getting back to giving Reflexology treatments soon.

“Some people in this life will cut you open,
just to see what you are made of.
Show them, it is love 💛.”

Finding compassion to forgive an attack on your soft underbelly is never easy.
But we know it is the way.
The way to peace, to growth and to healing.

And whilst our monkey mind will compose countless unsent letters or speeches never spoken, listing all the ways in which we feel misunderstood or misaligned.

It is better, always better,
to simply rise above and send out love.

How to send out love to someone who is clearly hell-bent on bringing you pain?

You look behind the scenes at why they are sad, where their trauma has somewhere become bitter and you wish all of that away for them.
You wish their pain to be processed - and not actively projecting - like a volcano spewing out molten miseries from within.

And you wish them the strength to go back and undo the break that was strapped up so wrongly.

And even if they cannot, or will not, still you wrap them in your love and you offer them a place in your heart.

Because only a heart full of love will ever beat easy.
You cannot hold grudges in there.
Or dislike.
And of course hatred has no place in a heart, this we know.
But indifference can’t breathe there either.

It must all be love (if peace is your aim).

And for me, this task feels impossible much of the time. But given practise and space and of course, more love (the thing that can never run out), it happens.

Some people in this life will cut you open, just to see what you are made of.
Show them, it is LOVE ❤️

"I have written about these three boys twice now and I am not staying quiet on this one. Every time I think about the Court of Appeal looking at the case again, I keep coming back to a part of it nobody in that courtroom will talk about. It is not about the law this time but the body, the physiology of these girls as it’s the part I am trained in. I work with the physiology of trauma and the nervous system and it is the part I sit with survivors on every day so I cannot read this and say nothing.

These three boys filmed themselves r**ing two girls then they went home, slept in their own beds, walked back into the same school. Eleven r**e convictions between them and not one single day taken off their normal lives.

When someone commits a crime and nothing happens to them afterwards, their nervous system learns that it was safe to do it because no consequences happened. Their body files it away as something it can do again…..and again….and again.

These same boys were organised enough to make that girl leave her phone and her AirTag behind, so nobody could find where they were taking her. That is a brain that can plan so do not tell me they were too young to understand how serious r**e is, or why ADHD impaired cognitive functioning. They knew exactly what they were doing.

Now the other side because whilst those boys were learning it was safe, the two girls were learning the complete opposite.

When a girl is attacked, her body takes over to keep her alive. That is not weakness and it is not a choice. If it can fight, it floods her to fight. If it can run, it makes her run but when she is trapped and outnumbered, it does the only thing left. It goes into freeze and shuts down and goes still. That frozen stillness on the footage was not her agreeing to anything. It was her body slamming on the emergency brake to keep her alive. It did an amazing job for her!

But then the body does not switch that off when the danger passes. For months afterwards it stays braced. She checks every room, watches every group of boys, every underpass, every set of footsteps behind her. Her heart races at things that are perfectly safe because her body can no longer tell then from now. She is not being dramatic because her body has been changed by what happened.

Then she walks into that courtroom, after months of waiting for this one day to mean something and the most powerful voice in the room turns to the boys and says he is worried about their futures. Her body hears that as the answer to the question she has carried the whole time. Do I matter? What about me? And the answer she gets is that she matters less than they do. That is a secondary trauma, laid right on top of the first.

This is why we have to bring the body into this conversation. Not instead of justice but right beside it. A sentence is never just a legal thing. It is a message and it sinks into the bodies of everyone watching. The boys learning what they can get away with. The girls learning what they are worth and every young person on their phone tonight, slowly working out which one of those two they will become.

The Court of Appeal can change that message. The pressure is already starting to work so please keep talking about this one and keep sharing it. What did it do to your body when you read that a judge thanked these boys for behaving well, in the same courtroom they made two girls walk into rather than admit what they had done?

Let’s keep his conversation going...!"
