What is an annual health check?

An annual health check is a free health check for people with a learning disability aged 14 and over, on the learning disability register. If you are not sure if you are on the register, ask your GP practice.

Annual health checks help people stay healthy and find any health problems early.

A doctor or nurse at the GP surgery will talk about:

βœ… Physical health
βœ… Mental health
βœ… Medicines
βœ… Healthy eating and exercise
βœ… Any support the person may need

Why is it important?

βœ… It can find health problems early
βœ… Prevent illnesses from getting worse
βœ… Make sure you get the right support
βœ… Improve your health and wellbeing
βœ… Help you stay healthy and independent

Many people with a learning disability have health conditions that can be missed without regular checks.

How do I get an annual health check?

πŸ“ž Contact your GP surgery.

πŸ—“ Ask to book your annual health check.

🀝 You can bring a family member, carer, or supporter with you if you want.

πŸ“‹ You can also ask for reasonable adjustments to make your appointment easier.

Watch Harshi and her mum talk about how they keep Harshi healthy, and the importance of having an annual health check and health action plan.

πŸ”¦Staff Spotlight: Running for Skills for People

πŸ™ŒWe are so proud of our incredible colleague, Bryn! At 28 years old, Bryn is autistic and has been a fantastic part of the Skills for People team for the past four years. During this time, he has seen first-hand the life-changing impact and opportunities our organisation provides for disabled people and their families.

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈBryn has already been putting in an amazing shift this year, tackling both the Great North 10k and the famous Blaydon Races! Now, he is stepping things up even further to support our mission by taking on the ultimate North East challenge: running the Great North Run 2026!

πŸ‘ŸTraining for 13.1 miles is a huge commitment, and Bryn is pushing himself all the way from Newcastle to South Shields to raise vital funds for our charity.

πŸͺ™Skills for People relies heavily on donations to ensure that disabled people and their families remain in control of their lives, feel strong and confident, and are truly included in their communities.

πŸ₯³Please join us in cheering Bryn on! If you would like to support his fundraising efforts and help us continue this important work, please click the link below to donate or share this post.

You might know us for our expertise in delivering this vital learning across the North East, but did you know we also celebrate with... Jazz Hands?! πŸ™Œ

Bryn and Alina are channeling all the post-training joy after an amazing session with a fantastic group of learners.

Yes, we are professional trainers committed to inclusion, authenticity, and making care better (we even have the lanyards to prove it!). But at the end of the day, we’re just two humans absolutely delighted that it’s gone well!

Massive thank you to everyone who joined us today for your energy, engagement, and for co-creating such a safe, dynamic space. We’re so proud to be part of your journey in making inclusion matter.
