Day 6… I think? 🤷♀️🚴♂️
We’ve made it from Valenciennes to Amiens, although at this point nobody is entirely sure what day it is, what town we’re in, or whether we’ve actually been dry at any point this week! 🌧️😂
The important thing is that all the riders are back in more or less one piece, despite battling endless cobbles, questionable weather, puddles big enough to have their own postcode, and enough kilometres to make their legs file a formal complaint.
As the support crew, it’s been a week of sports therapy, tape, massage, reassurance, finding coffee, finding snacks, finding riders, and occasionally wondering why we thought this was a good idea. 😆
The riders have been absolutely incredible and it’s been a privilege to support them on behalf of Fingers & Thumbs and the amazing Only Fools & Donkeys charity ride.
On a more serious note, one of the most moving moments of the trip was visiting the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry Memorial at Les Rues Vertes. It was lovely to meet local schoolchildren who had come to pay tribute to the Guernsey men who defended the area during the First World War.
The memorial marks the actions of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry during the Battle of Les Rues Vertes in November 1917. The regiment suffered heavy losses while helping hold the line during the Battle of Cambrai, and more than a century later it was humbling to see young people learning about their sacrifice and helping to keep their memory alive.
It’s a reminder that journeys like this aren’t just about the miles ridden, the sore legs, or even the fundraising. They’re also about remembering the history, courage and community that connect places and people across generations.
Tomorrow brings a very well-earned rest day in Saint-Malo before we head for the ferry back to Guernsey on Sunday.
For now, it’s time for food, a beer (or two), and giving those tired legs a chance to remember what normal feels like. 🍺🚴♂️💆♀️
