Back to reality! 🚴➡️💆‍♀️

After a week of cobbles, crashes, rain, chain grease, and pretending I knew what was going on in professional cycling, I’m finally back where I belong.

The riders survived, the ferry made it home, and somehow I managed to keep everyone patched together with only minimal amounts of swearing and sports tape.

I’ve loved supporting the Mule Flanders Tour and spending time in Guernsey, but now it’s time to swap cyclists for clients, massage tables instead of team vans, and get back into clinic.

If you’ve been waiting for an appointment, I’m back and ready to help with all those aches, pains, niggles and injuries that haven’t magically fixed themselves while I’ve been away!

Fingers & Thumbs is officially open for business again.

(Although I may still judge everyone on their ability to ride over cobbles.) 😆🚴‍♂️💆‍♀️

And relax… 😅🍻

All the riders are safely back in Guernsey and enjoying a well-earned evening after an epic week on the road.

As for me, I’m finally enjoying a bit of downtime in Guernsey before heading home tomorrow. After a week of cobbles, crashes, rain, sports therapy, bike loading, hotel hunting and a van that decided gears were entirely optional, it’s nice to sit still for five minutes! 😂

It’s been a fantastic experience supporting the amazing Only Fools & Donkeys Mule Flanders Tour team. We’ve travelled hundreds of miles, met some wonderful people, visited some iconic cycling locations and somehow managed to bring everyone back in one piece.

Now it’s time for a drink, some good company and a chance to reflect on a brilliant week before the journey home begins tomorrow.

Until the next adventure… 🍻🚴‍♂️🇬🇬

Last night in St Malo…

After a week of supporting an incredible bunch of cyclists, carrying enough very expensive bikes to make me nervous every time I parked up, the mighty Guernsey van decided it had finally had enough.

Hundreds of miles travelled from Amiens to St Malo. Towing a trailer. Motorways, cobbles, rain, chaos and French drivers. Not a single complaint.

Then, on the very last night, it absolutely scrambled its gearbox.

No reverse. No 2nd. No 5th.

Clearly it had been holding itself together with sheer determination and a bit of Guernsey stubbornness.

The cyclists are all back in one piece, the tour has been amazing, and the van chose the finish line to retire from active service.

Two years to recover before the next Mule Flanders Tour… although the van may be applying for permanent retirement.

RIP van. You got us to St Malo. 🚐💨😂

Day 6… I think? 🤷‍♀️🚴‍♂️

We’ve made it from Valenciennes to Amiens, although at this point nobody is entirely sure what day it is, what town we’re in, or whether we’ve actually been dry at any point this week! 🌧️😂

The important thing is that all the riders are back in more or less one piece, despite battling endless cobbles, questionable weather, puddles big enough to have their own postcode, and enough kilometres to make their legs file a formal complaint.

As the support crew, it’s been a week of sports therapy, tape, massage, reassurance, finding coffee, finding snacks, finding riders, and occasionally wondering why we thought this was a good idea. 😆

The riders have been absolutely incredible and it’s been a privilege to support them on behalf of Fingers & Thumbs and the amazing Only Fools & Donkeys charity ride.

On a more serious note, one of the most moving moments of the trip was visiting the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry Memorial at Les Rues Vertes. It was lovely to meet local schoolchildren who had come to pay tribute to the Guernsey men who defended the area during the First World War.

The memorial marks the actions of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry during the Battle of Les Rues Vertes in November 1917. The regiment suffered heavy losses while helping hold the line during the Battle of Cambrai, and more than a century later it was humbling to see young people learning about their sacrifice and helping to keep their memory alive.

It’s a reminder that journeys like this aren’t just about the miles ridden, the sore legs, or even the fundraising. They’re also about remembering the history, courage and community that connect places and people across generations.

Tomorrow brings a very well-earned rest day in Saint-Malo before we head for the ferry back to Guernsey on Sunday.

For now, it’s time for food, a beer (or two), and giving those tired legs a chance to remember what normal feels like. 🍺🚴‍♂️💆‍♀️

🚴‍♂️🐴 Day 5 – Roubaix to Valenciennes 🐴🚴‍♂️

The day started in style with a visit to the legendary Roubaix Velodrome – definitely one for the bucket list! From there it was a fairly straightforward ride… well, as straightforward as cycling across northern France can be.

The highlight (or depending on who you ask, the horror show!) was tackling the infamous Arenberg Trench. Those cobbles are hard enough in the dry, but throw in some pretty heavy rain and it quickly became a test of bike handling, determination and occasionally colourful language.

The weather once again decided it wanted to be the star of the show, with another soaking arriving in the afternoon. At this point the rain is becoming an official member of the support team.

A very wet, very cold collection of cyclists eventually rolled into Valenciennes looking slightly less heroic than they had set off. But the spirits remain high, the team continue to be absolutely amazing, and I’m fairly certain a hot shower, a cold beer and some dinner will have everyone ready to do it all again tomorrow.

So that’s another bucket-list ticked off, another day conquered, and hopefully another dry pair of socks located somewhere in France! 🇫🇷🍺🚴‍♂️

Day 4 – Bruges to Roubaix 🚴‍♂️🐴

Today’s route took the Only Fools and Donkeys team from the beautiful streets of Bruges to the legendary cycling city of Roubaix.

What started as another day in the saddle soon turned into one of the most challenging stages yet. The infamous cobbles made their appearance and, as anyone who knows cycling will tell you, they show absolutely no mercy. Bikes rattled, teeth chattered and riders were bounced around like they were in a washing machine.

Unfortunately, the cobbles also led to a few crashes along the way. Thankfully everyone got back up and carried on, although there are definitely a few extra aches, bruises and war stories to add to the collection tonight.

As part of the support crew, it was a busy day of checking riders over, working on sore muscles and helping keep everyone moving forward. The recovery table was certainly more popular than the finish line refreshments!

Despite the spills and the rough roads, the team spirit was outstanding. Every rider dug deep, looked after one another and kept pushing towards Roubaix, proving once again what this challenge is all about.

Today was a proper cycling adventure – tough, muddy in places, occasionally painful, but full of determination, laughter and camaraderie.

Everyone still smiling (mostly) ✔️

🚴‍♂️🇧🇪🇳🇱 Only Fools & Donkeys – Day 3: Bruges Loop 🇳🇱🇧🇪🚴‍♀️

Today’s route took us out of Bruges and into Holland, with the North Sea coast doing its best impression of a washing machine. 🌧️💨

The weather was absolutely character building and a few of our brave cyclists discovered that Belgian and Dutch roads can become surprisingly slippery when soaked. A couple of tumbles, plenty of laughs, and thankfully nothing too serious.

Special mention goes to the rider who somehow managed to electrocute himself during the day. Don’t ask me how… we’re still trying to work that one out. ⚡🚴‍♂️ It wouldn’t be an Only Fools & Donkeys adventure without at least one story nobody will believe when we get home.

As support crew from Fingers & Thumbs, my day involved keeping riders patched up, reassured and moving again while questioning my life choices in the wind and rain.

And after all that excitement, all the photos I managed to get were… a windmill. 🌬️🌾

Which, to be fair, is probably the most Dutch thing possible.

Another day done, another chapter written, and tomorrow we do it all again for a fantastic cause. ❤️🐴

Day 2 – Gosnay to Brugge 🇫🇷➡️🇧🇪

After leaving Gosnay this morning, the Only Fools and Donkeys Charity Cycle Ride headed into the heart of Flanders, following a route steeped in history before arriving in the stunning city of Brugge.

Along the way we visited a number of moving memorials and cemeteries, each telling its own story of sacrifice and courage. From local war memorials honouring those lost in both World Wars to the vast military cemeteries that stretch across the landscape, it was a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict.

One particularly poignant stop was at the graves of members of the Chinese Labour Corps, whose contribution to the war effort is often overlooked. We also paid our respects at the grave of a young British nurse who gave her life while caring for others, a touching reminder that heroism takes many forms.

The route took us through Ypres, where the magnificent Menin Gate stands as a lasting tribute to thousands of soldiers who have no known grave. Seeing the names carved into the stone and reflecting on the significance of the Last Post ceremony was a moment that will stay with many of us.

As always, my role as part of the support team is to help keep the riders moving, easing tired muscles and helping them recover after another challenging day in the saddle. The determination, humour and spirit of this group continue to be inspiring.

By late afternoon, Brugge welcomed us with its beautiful architecture, cobbled streets and picture-postcard scenery. A well-earned end to another memorable day.

🚴‍♂️ Day 2 complete.

🚴🐴 Amiens to Gosnay – Day 1 Complete! 🐴🚴

Day 1 of the Only Fools and Donkeys Charity Ride is in the bag!

The riders have survived the French roads, the kilometres, and my constant reminders to drink water, stretch, and stop pretending they’re twenty years younger than they are. 😂

As the tour sports therapist, I’ve spent the day keeping legs moving, backs happy, and attempting to convince cyclists that recovery is actually part of the ride and not an optional extra!

So far we’ve had:
✅ Plenty of miles covered
✅ Plenty of laughs
✅ No donkeys demanding a massage (yet)
✅ Riders discovering muscles they didn’t know they had

It’s a privilege to be supporting this fantastic group as they pedal their way from Amiens to Gosnay, raising money for the amazing Only Fools and Donkeys charity.

Tonight’s plan? Massage, food, hydration, and a little bit of complaining about sore bottoms before we do it all again tomorrow! 🚴‍♂️💪

Good luck to all the riders for Day 2. You’ve got this!
