Help with headaches
Who hasn’t had a headache? Headaches are just a part of life for many people. In fact, the World Health Organisation estimates that between half and three-quarters of the world’s population suffers from headaches. Many people need help with headaches.

There are many different causes, including stress, eye-strain, sinusitis, eating something that doesn’t agree with us, dehydration, tiredness, hormones or even too much partying.

Marma therapy offers a range of treatments that can help. First of all, it’s profoundly relaxing – many people say the experience is more relaxing than anything they had tried before [Deep Relaxation] This relaxation reduces stress which in turn reduces headaches. One client reported that a long-standing headache had reduced by 80% after just one treatment.

There is also a specific treatment to relax and enliven the eyes – this is very beneficial for those who spend a lot of time in front of the computer or other screens – and these days, who doesn’t?

Marma Therapy comes from Ayurveda, which provides useful, practical nutritional recommendations that can also help reduce headaches triggered by poor food choices.

There is a treatment for the sinuses, too. This can help with headaches caused by sinusitis. A client was delighted when her sinusitis headache eased after a brief treatment. Her comment: ‘Miraculous!’

Another client said: ‘That was fabulous! I had a headache for 3 weeks and now it’s gone.’

And another said: ‘That was lovely, just wonderful. I feel different now, more settled. The headache has eased’.

And a hangover headache? Well, no promises there, but one client who came for a short treatment said: ‘I had a [hangover] headache when I came here – now it’s gone. Result!’

For more information or to book a treatment, please contact [email protected] or message 07946 386290. I look forward to hearing from you.

Brilliant Marma Therapy Sleep Protocol
Problems Getting To Sleep – Or Staying Asleep?
Or Do You Suffer From Anxiety or Panic Attacks?
This Marma Therapy Sleep Protocol May Help

During the pandemic, Dr Schrott taught us a beautiful and simple Marma Therapy Sleep Protocol (also known as the Nava Marma Mudra) for calming the nervous system, which is perfect for helping with sleep issues, and even strengthening immunity. It takes just 3-5 minutes to practise and anyone can do it.

I have taught it to many people since then, with some wonderful results. People report that they get to sleep more easily and have a better quality of sleep.

One person reported that her FitBit had confirmed the improvement in her sleep pattern, showing deeper sleep after she began practising the technique.

A mother uses it to help her son get to sleep when he is particularly restless (he has ADHD).

Other people have used the technique when experiencing anxiety or panic attacks, and have felt calmer and more settled, as a result.

If you would like to learn this simple technique, instruction is available online and takes just 20-30 minutes, and the cost is just £47. You can book online training here, or you are welcome to come in person to Newhaven.

Client Comments:
‘I’ve been using the new sleep treatment since we learned it and it’s working really well. I still wake in the night but it gets me back to sleep every time. So thanks very much.’

‘Hi Marek, thank you so much for the Marma routine, I used it at bed time and fell asleep in the last position! Then today, when i was really feeling stressed, I locked myself in the bathroom and did it, and it really helped me.’

‘I hope you are well. I wanted to first of all thank you for the Marma Mudra positions you showed me. It really helped me recover from my chest infection and I have continued doing the positions regularly, feel so much better and am pretty much to back to my old healthy self. After a year of feeling very unwell with Covid twice, long covid for 7 months and recurring chest infections, this is the first time I’ve felt healthy and well in a very long time! I can’t thank you enough and so grateful to have these tools, together with the TM to maintain my wellbeing.

‘Yes, definitely helps. Use it quite a bit, when wake up at night, also at work (goes to bathroom).’

‘I do use your sleep technique though, works like a dream. Many blessings.’

As I said, the training takes just 20-30 minutes, and the cost is only £47. You can book online training here, or you are welcome to come in person to Newhaven..

Do you use essential oils in Marma Therapy? The answer is: usually, but not always.

Personally, I have loved wonderful smells all my life. Our home has bottles of essential oils in every room – whether it’s peppermint, vetiver, lavender, orange, or over a hundred others! I remember people as much by their smell as by their appearance. And it’s not just me – I walked down a local high street a week ago and noted there were three shops selling fragrances within 100 yards of each other.

And have you noticed that many restaurants used to (before Covid!) offer you peppermint sweets after a meal? Every wondered why? Yes, obviously they want to impress you with their generosity but why peppermint? Because peppermint has been known for centuries to aid digestion, which also sweetens breath.

Similarly, many cleaning products have a lemon aroma – because lemon has long been known to work as an air disinfectant. And lavender is known to be calming and settling. There are many other examples, but the point is that essential oils have specific effects on the body and the environment, and scientific research has demonstrated this, too.

What has this to do with Marma Therapy? Marma Therapy treatments – generally, but not always! – involve skin contact. It’s a gentle massage treatment of the body’s Ayurvedic vital energy points, or Marmas. Oil is very useful in massage, as it helps the hands slide over the surface of the skin. In addition, we use essential oil blends to enhance the therapeutic effect of the treatment.

Which oil to use?
There is a range of oils to choose from, including a number of Marma oil blends specially developed by my teacher Dr Ernst Schrott. These target the seven principal Marmas or are designed for a specific purpose. There is a wonderful oil blend – Ropana – for scar treatments. Another one – Adiprana – is very good for respiratory issues, including sinusitis. I have also found it helpful for patients who, for one reason or another – not necessarily Covid-related – have lost their sense of taste and smell. After a couple of treatments, some of the sense of taste and smell returned. That was amazing!

There are also some Ayurvedic oils such as Joint Soothe, which needs no explanation. Vata and Pitta oil blends are also popular. So how do we choose the right essential for a treatment? If we need an oil for a scar treatment or respiratory issue, then that’s simple – we just use Ropana or Adiprana oil blends. Otherwise, we let the client sniff two or three oils and see which one they prefer. There is a simple and wonderful principle in Aromatherapy. The oil that you like at a particular time is the oil that is best for you. Your nose doesn’t lie – you either like the smell or you don’t!

So yes, we use essential oils in Marma therapy both to help the hands glide over the skin and for their known therapeutic effects.

Feeling like a cracked pot – how Marma Therapy let light in through the cracks
Letting the light in: last week a client with severe depression came for a Marma treatment. When I spoke of the importance of seeing a doctor, she said that this was almost impossible at present. Only telephone consultations are available. You don’t know when the doctor will phone, and she’s at work during the day. If you miss a doctor’s call, you have to start from the beginning.

She also said that she felt like a broken piece of pottery, in shards, and saw no way to put the pieces together again.

I gave her a Sukshma Marma treatment focused on general wellbeing, plus a couple of areas of specific concern in the neck and shoulder. She left the treatment room smiling.

The next day she wrote to say that she had taken a week off work for self-care, had been able to find a doctor to help her with hormonal issues, and enclosed a picture of a broken pot that had been mended with gold (Japanese art form: Kintsugi https://mymodernmet.com/kintsugi-kintsukuroi/) with the caption ‘Cracks allow the light to get in’.

A teacher friend of mine was telling me how the pressure of work is ‘unrelenting’. She works with children who are being referred for autism and many other problems, particularly mental health issues. And she said that she knows many other front-line workers in the teaching, health and caring professions who struggle with the ever-increasing workloads.

When I look round at our institutions and the financial situation of the country, it’s as if they are cracking. How will people cope with the rise in energy and food prices? How can people deal with sickness if they can’t access healthcare? Not to mention the risks posed by climate change. Or problems with the government. See where this is going? As existing systems crack, they are beginning to let in the light. The knowledge and technologies are already there to solve these problems, they just need to be used.

If you would like to read more about some of the solutions currently available, I recently wrote about problems and solutions.

Sometimes you have a run of similar conditions – this was a week with several leg pain issues.

A client came with pain in her foot and ankle. She had fractured her foot while walking her dog on the Downs. She then had an operation during which a titanium plate, screws and wire were inserted and the break was gradually healing, but she was still experiencing pain. I did a scar and foot treatment, after which she wrote:

‘Thank you so much for the Marma treatment! I felt marvellous during and after the treatment, it was very calming and enjoyable. What I didn’t expect though is what a difference it made to the shooting pains I’ve been experiencing during the evenings. Usually when I get into bed for the night the ankle starts to complain a bit with irritating shooting pains, but on Tuesday there wasn’t any of that at all, and it continued feeling great the following day.

I wish I could come over more often for more treatments!.’

A second client had painful hips. She said it might have been made worse by some weight training she had been doing. After the treatment she said: ‘That was absolutely divine, really lovely.’ Then she bent down to pick up her bag and said: ‘The hips aren’t hurting, I can bend down!’

Relaxing and therapeutic
A third client had landed from a height onto her heel. It hurt a lot so she went to A&E. Fortunately the X-Ray showed there was no fracture but, weeks later, she was still having problems putting weight on the foot. A day after the treatment she wrote: ‘Thank you .. for the ..sublime treatment yesterday. Amazing. I feel so very blessed… My foot is also much better too. Wishing you a beautiful day and look forward to our next session.’

What these comments show, I think, is that Marma Therapy can be very helpful in different types of leg pain, while at the same time being relaxing and enjoyable.

Stories from Kerala
Dr Balraj Maharishi in the Amazon jungle
In 1981, when Maharishi was starting to talk about Ayurveda, he organised for Dr Balraj Maharshi to go to the Amazon to look at plants. He went with a delegation of about 20 people, including Government Ministers, some scientists, and a tribal leader. Security personnel accompanied them as they were going into the jungle and there were potential risks from wild animals and hostile tribes.

As they walked in the jungle, Dr Balraj Maharshi would stop occasionally, point at a plant, and explain how it could be used to help cure some specific disease. As he did this, what he said was translated for the Government ministers and the tribal chief, Raoni Metuktire. After Dr Maharshi had done this a few times, the tribal chief became very angry. He started shouting, saying that this was some kind of a stitch-up, where traditional secret tribal knowledge of the plants was being publicly revealed.

In response, Dr Balraj Maharshi just quietly explained that the plants spoke to him and told him how they could help cure human diseases.

Some years later, Chief Raoni Metuktire travelled round Europe with Sting to raise awareness of the problems facing the Amazon jungle and its indigenous peoples (more about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raoni_Metuktire).

[I had the privilege of hearing Dr Balraj Maharshi speak during the ‘Pioneers of Perfect Health’ course near New Delhi in 1988 – it was extraordinarily liberating hearing about herbs that could help heal many intractable conditions].

Sri Laxmanju
Sri Laxmanju was a great and wonderful saint from the last century. Although he rarely left his ashram, he decided one time to travel to Delhi for a conference on Kashmir Shaivism, focusing on kundalini. He prepared a talk in Sanskrit and, when he arrived at the conference, asked the organisers if he could present it.

The organisers agreed and his talk, based not just on the Vedic texts but also on his personal experiences, inspired a standing ovation. The organisers then invited him to sit on the stage with the other dignitaries. One of them was a Mr Jha, who considered himself to be India’s foremost Kashmir Shaivism scholar. After the conference, Mr Jha wrote to Laxmanju and said that he was the leading expert on the subject and would come to his ashram – and challenged him to a discussion.

Laxmanju agreed, and some weeks later Mr Jha arrived. He wanted to begin the discussion immediately after arriving at the ashram. Laxmanju suggested that, as he had been travelling, they start by drinking tea, which they did, in silence.

At the end of 10 – 15 minutes, with no words spoken, Mr Jha prostrated himself in front of Laxmanju and said ‘you win’ – later becoming one of his most prominent disciples.

Shri Laxmanju – second story
A man came to visit Laxmanju at his ashram to ask him some questions. As they were talking – and also taking tea – Laxmanju leaned forward and poured a couple of drops of tea rose oil into the man’s tea. The man drank it and, as he was leaving, Laxmanju invited him to stay the night in the ashram as it was already late and there was no other accommodation nearby. The man accepted gratefully.

In the morning, when one of the ashram staff went to the guest’s room, he seemed ecstatic. He explained that he’d had a life-long problem with psoriasis. He had tried everything, and the only thing he could do was to cover up. So he always wore long sleeves and trousers. This morning when he had woken up, he found that the psoriasis had completely gone.

Stories from Kerala
Here are some stories I heard the last time I was in Kerala

Guru Dev and the wounded tiger
A tiger had killed over 100 people in northern India over a period of three years. The authorities then arranged for a famous tiger hunter to come from Nepal to track him down and shoot him.

The hunter came with a support team and was told where the latest sighting had been. He followed the spoor, found the tiger, took a shot and wounded the tiger, which limped off. He then followed the tiger, which wasn’t too difficult because of the drops of blood from his wound. Eventually they arrived at a clearing, where they saw the tiger with his head on a yogi’s lap.

The yogi was putting some water on the tiger’s head and talking to him in Hindi. ‘Now you have to stop doing bad things and killing people’. Then, after a while, ‘so now go’. The tiger got up, looked round at the hunter, and then ran off, completely healed.

The special thing about this account is that, according to the story, the yogi was Guru Dev, Maharishi’s teacher. Guru Dev spent many years in forests. The hunter later became President of Nepal and wrote about this experience in a published journal.

Jyotishi / Pandit performs yagya for kidnapped son
A meditator in South America came to her local TM Centre and despairingly reported the kidnapping of her son, aged 16. The kidnappers were demanding a ransom of many millions of dollars. If the kidnappers didn’t get this amount, they would start sending the parents bits of their son, until either they paid or the son died.

The TM teacher, who was also a keen student of Jyotish (Vedic astrology) contacted his Jyotish teacher in India. His teacher said that, provided the boy was still alive, he could do a yagya (traditional Vedic performance to help people at times of difficulty) for him and he would be released unharmed after about 20 days, with no ransom to pay.

The parents decided to go ahead with the yagya and waited. After 20 days nothing had happened so the teacher contacted the Jyotishi again. This time he said that he also needed to see the parents’ birth charts. After looking at the charts, he said that they too would need a yagya.

After the second yagya, news came in about suspicious activity in a house not far from the TM Centre. A lot of police were involved, plus a helicopter. It turned out to be the location where the boy was being held. They stormed the building, arrested the kidnappers and freed the boy.

A Taste of Heaven
A year or two after Annie and I got married, we visited a stationer’s / bookshop in Tring, in Buckinghamshire. There I picked up a book by Paul McKenna and, leafing through it, read a piece of advice that we followed. The advice was to put photos of the things we wanted in a scrap book, and look at them from time to time.

Well, we definitely had things that we wanted! I had been working on a voluntary basis for a charity for many years, so we really didn’t have very much. So we bought a scrap book and put in lots of photos: of kitchen equipment that we needed, also a house by the sea, overlooking a harbour, with a ferry visible – like the house in Cephalonia where we had spent a week on our honeymoon; trips abroad; healthy teeth – I had a lot of dental issues in those years; cash in the bank. And we looked at the photos from time to time. Then we forgot about them.

And a few years later, when we looked again, we found that we had achieved almost all of the goals we had set ourselves: we had plenty of kitchen equipment, we had moved to a (small!) house by the sea with views of the river, the sea, the harbour, the marina, cliffs and – the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry! We had travelled to some wonderful locations around the world; my teeth were healthier – if fewer. One notable exception was cash in the bank – still, four out of five ain’t bad!

What next?
Then, when we thought what pictures we could put in the scrapbook next, i.e. what did we really want now – we couldn’t think of any things. That was weird.

Some time later the thought came up ‘Create Heaven on Earth’ – obviously not by ourselves! I started rolling that idea round the brain. It was a very big idea, and not so easy to define, also what could I do to bring it about?

I had been practising Transcendental Meditation for many years and my teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, had often spoken about Heaven on Earth. But somehow that had been a wonderful and exotic idea from someone else. This time, the thought had come from inside.

So I wondered what to do. I had also been teaching TM for many years, and that certainly improved my life and the lives of my students. .They reported being less worried and anxious, more creative, with more energy. Relationships were more fulfilling. All beautiful improvements in the direction of Heaven on Earth, certainly.

But I wondered if there was something else. And then I heard about Sukshma Marma Therapy, which was being taught by a brilliant German doctor, Ernst Schrott. I’ve written about that separately, but one of the things I noticed on the courses I attended with Dr Schrott was – they felt heavenly! So much so that when I had completed the training, I continued going to all the courses I could. Technically they were repeats of the same three courses but, in practice, they were all different because the course structure kept evolving.

Heavenly!
What they all had in common was – that heavenly feeling. Looking back on it, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly how that was created. Dr Schrott himself was a very special and wonderful person. He was incredibly knowledgeable, but also highly intuitive and also very kind and generous with his time and knowledge. Oh, and he was an amazing therapist / healer. He would invite people with different issues – back problems, frozen shoulders, emotional blockages, whatever – to come to the front of the group. Then, very quietly, gently, kindly, he would perform some miraculous Marma Therapy and they would get better. It was amazing.

And he would insist that we could all do this.

Also, the people that attended the courses contributed to that heavenly feeling. By and large they were either therapists themselves or people who had practised TM for many years. And then, of course, it was the nature of Marma Therapy itself. By reconnecting the individual with their deepest Self, it created a blissful feeling of Heaven.

Then, when I started giving Marma Therapy taster sessions at well-being fairs – the most I ever did in one day was 26! – I noticed that when it was time for the person to open their eyes, they would very often have a beautiful smile on their faces as if they had been somewhere wonderful, even though they were in a busy and often noisy exhibition room.

And it worked for others!
And after treatments, people said things like: ‘Beautiful! Amazing! Very different. Such a gentle touch, so beneficial. I can’t talk now. Heavenly! It felt like the sunshine was shining all the time [even though it was a grey, overcast day].’ Or ‘Bliss – that was heavenly!’ Or ‘It was just heaven, just what the body needed after having a battering. Felt like: ‘Everything’s ok, now’ Or ‘Heaven is in a studio in Newhaven; I did just want to say a massive thank you for my time in Heaven yesterday’

Distance Therapy
Attention without touch is one of many ways in which the Marmas can be treated. While treatments are generally done in person using the gentle massage treatment that is Sukshma Marma Therapy, distance treatments are also available.

Treatments on the level of consciousness can be very helpful, especially if it is difficult to get to a therapist or else to complement other treatments.

If you are interested in a distance treatment for yourself or someone you know, this is how it works: you would first have a brief consultation, which can either be in person or by Skype/WhatsApp etc. so that we can discuss any issues, and then together we can decide the direction to take to try to remedy the situation.

After that, using ‘attention without touch’, treatments are provided on the level of consciousness, and from time to time I ask you for feedback to find out what changes you are experiencing.

Over the past week I received some wonderful Marma experiences.

What was unusual was that they covered not just the usual in person treatments here in the Studio, but also 5-minute Marma taster treatments, Distance Treatments, self Marma treatments (using the daily Marmas of the Moon mailings) and even the results of trainee Marma therapists carrying out case studies on family and friends.

The results are amazing and just highlight the basic principle in Marma Therapy: do the treatment innocently, without any expectations, and this creates a situation where Nature can heal. And when Nature heals, this is the kind of thing that happens:

– following a single one-hour treatment, a client with heart issues reported: ‘I would like you to know that since my treatment with you my heart has been much better and the occurrences of atrial fibrillation have reduced considerably to the extent that I don’t think that I have had one since the middle of December. My heart rate also seems to be much more under control. This is absolutely wonderful for me so thank you and to all those that work with you.’

– after distance treatment, a man with painful knees wrote: ‘I hope you remember me? You did a distance session for my knees. They’re still pain free. It’s delightful and astonishing.’

Taster treatments
– on a recent ‘Introduction to Marma Therapy’ workshop I did 5-minute Marma taster treatments for 2 of the course participants who hadn’t experienced Marma therapy before. Even though the procedure was almost identical for all 2, the experiences were very different:

– the first person, who’d had a fall a week earlier and had cut and bruised her face, said that she could feel the trauma of the fall lifting from her, and that she felt much more connected with herself;

– the second person, who was quite sceptical about Marma therapy and had injured his big toe some time ago and it hadn’t healed said that, after that short treatment, the toe felt much better. A couple of days later when I spoke to him he confirmed that the toe was still pain-free and his partner said that its colour was now the same as the other big toe, no longer looking red and inflamed;

Marmas of the Moon – self-treatment
– the next experience was from Marma self-treatment. After practising self-treatment using the daily Marmas of the Moon mailings, a couple reported: ‘We both find it calming both emotionally and physically. I am not a great morning person; I quite often wake in a dark place and can still feel rough after [morning meditation] and the Marma Therapy has been most helpful in smoothing this out and bringing stillness and peace.’ He added that his wife:’ has found it likewise calming and peaceful and that it’s helpful with her backache.’

So, wherever you are in the world, if you would like to experience Marma therapy for yourself, or would just like to know more about it, please let me know!
