I was back in London today for a conference and could not resist taking a quick trip down memory lane...

It happened to be King's College London's open day, and the campus was full of bright-eyed, enthusiastic prospective students. It was so lovely to see the excitement, optimism and ambition on display. Observing them brought back memories of being in exactly the same position myself and believing that graduation would be the final destination.

I graduated from King's College London in 2012, and I am incredibly proud of that achievement and the many happy memories associated with it. Looking back, though, I have come to realise that graduation was not the end point — it was just the beginning.

The real education came afterwards: through patients, clinical experience, challenges, personal growth and life itself.

Fourteen years on, I am still learning.

✨" Your body is changing. Your worth is not "✨

As women, our bodies are constantly evolving...

Through puberty, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, menopause and beyond, our bodies adapt and change in remarkable ways. Yet, so many of us struggle to accept these changes, often longing to return to the body we once had.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel stronger, healthier or more comfortable in your own skin. But I often remind the women I care for that their bodies are beautiful at every stage of life.

Every stretch mark, scar, wrinkle and change tells a story. A story of growth, resilience, love, strength and survival. Your body may not look the same as it did 10, 20 or 30 years ago, but that does not make it any less worthy of kindness, respect or care.

This is something I have had to learn myself...

So, if you are finding it difficult to make peace with the changes you are experiencing, please give yourself grace and speak to yourself with the same compassion you would give to a loved one.

✨ Struggling With Hot Flushes in This Heatwave? This May Help… ✨

For many women, heatwaves can make menopausal symptoms feel even more intense especially hot flushes, night sweats, and sleep disturbance.

This happens because declining oestrogen levels affect the body’s thermoregulation system essentially your internal thermostat. During menopause, that temperature “comfort zone” becomes much narrower, meaning the body becomes less able to cope with extremes of temperature.

So, if you are struggling more than usual in this weather, you are not imagining it.

☀️ A few simple things that may help:

• Stay well hydrated throughout the day

• Wear loose, breathable fabrics such as cotton

• Reduce or avoid alcohol and caffeine intake

• Reduce or avoid spicy foods

• Keep bedrooms cool at night

• Use a fan or cooling mist spray

• Prioritise rest where possible

☀️ If these measures are not enough, please do not simply ignore your symptoms especially if they are affecting your quality of life...

You are most welcome to book a consultation with our British Menopause Society registered menopause specialist to discuss both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options, tailored to your individual needs. 🤍

✨️ I see women at the brink of despair in every clinic, and I often wonder… why do we do this to ourselves? ✨️

If the warning lights came on in our car, most of us would book it in for a service before the engine failed completely.

Yet, so many women struggle in silence with menopausal symptoms; pushing through exhaustion, low mood, anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, and that feeling of being “not quite themselves” for far too long...

You deserve support before you reach breaking point. ❤️

✨️ Do you have a history of postnatal depression, PMS or PMDD? If so, you need to read this... ✨️

During perimenopause, fluctuating hormone levels can both exacerbate pre-existing mental health conditions and contribute to new symptoms, including:

• Low mood
• Anxiety
• Panic attacks
• Irritability
• Mood swings
• Brain fog
• Loss of confidence
…and more.

Women with a history of hormone-sensitive mental health conditions such as postnatal depression or anxiety, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) may be particularly vulnerable to worsening symptoms during perimenopause.

However, the cognitive and psychological symptoms of perimenopause can also occur in women with no previous history of mental health difficulties or hormone sensitivity.

It can be an incredibly confusing and overwhelming time, with many women feeling as though they are “losing their mind” because they do not realise that hormones may be contributing to the way they feel, especially as these symptoms are not always accompanied by the more “tell-tale” signs such as hot flushes or night sweats.

It is also important to remember that perimenopause can begin as early as the mid-to-late thirties or early forties. If you are in this age group and experiencing new-onset mental health symptoms, it is worth considering whether hormonal changes could be playing a role.

If this resonates with you, or if you know someone who may be struggling with this, please encourage them to seek support from their GP or a British Menopause Society-registered menopause specialist. 💚

✨️ Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are often treated as isolated episodes but are we just addressing the 'symptom' rather than the underlying cause? ✨️

In older women, recurrent UTIs can be a manifestation of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM), driven by reduced oestrogen levels affecting the urinary, vulval and vaginal tissues. Despite this, many women are repeatedly prescribed antibiotics without tackling the root cause...

This really matters because recurrent UTIs are not just uncomfortable - they can contribute to delirium, functional decline, and, in some cases, lead to serious complications such as sepsis and hospital admissions.

In my role as an NHS GP supporting a large care home, I saw how a proactive approach could make a meaningful difference. During weekly ward rounds, I would routinely ask female residents about symptoms of GSM (e.g. vaginal dryness, recurrent UTIs, and recurrent thrush).

Identifying these symptoms early and considering localised oestrogen therapy where appropriate often helped reduce recurrent genitourinary infections and, importantly, prevented avoidable hospital admissions; which was especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Localised oestrogen is available as vaginal pessaries, creams, gels and the Estring. These treatments are simple, safe and effective, with minimal systemic absorption. In fact, using localised oestrogen for a year is roughly equivalent to taking a single 1mg oral oestrogen tablet — making it a very safe option for preventing recurrent UTIs.

If you are experiencing recurrent UTIs or have an elderly mother, sister, or aunt who is, it is worth starting this conversation. Consider asking your/their clinician: "could localised oestrogen be an option?" It may simply help to plant the idea, as it is not always routinely considered.

A simple conversation can make a significant difference...
