We wanted to clarify some confusing information that appears to be causing patients to be misinformed regarding ‘Ear Irrigation’.
It appears that the words ‘Ear Irrigation’ and ‘Ear Syringing’ are often used interchangeably and are being deemed by some websites/clinicians/general consensus to be ‘Banned’ or ‘Dangerous’
We would like to clear up a few things with factual information to allow patients to make informed choices.

1 - Using water to remove earwax from the ear canal using an ear irrigation machine is called “ear irrigation”

2 - Using a syringe or any other item to insert water that does not control the pressure of the water is not recommended, this is called ‘ear syringing’

3 - The NICE Guidelines suggest that both microsuction and irrigation are safe methods for ear wax removal once any contraindications have been established

4 - There are always risks with both methods.

5 - It is crucial that whoever is performing the procedure has been trained to an acceptable level, by an accredited establishment. It is also advised that they are indemnified to protect you from any malpractice and negligence

Why are SKIN LESION ASSESSMENTS crucial prior to removal of any skin lesion?
Not all skin lesions are benign. Some are malignant.
Benign means non cancerous
Malignant means cancerous or potentially cancerous.
Without the correct training, experience and equipment it can be difficult to ascertain a diagnosis.
