You all got a flavour of Birjoo’s teaching in class last week. It was inspired by a speech given by Guruji on his 95th birthday. And thanks to Katie for transcribing the relevant part to share.

And I look forward to seeing you in class the week after on the 9th and 10th.

I think everyone who attended the full weekend of Iyengar yoga with Birjoo Mehta will have found a depth to effortless practice that they may not quite have experineced before. It may appear esoteric to some but there is science behind it, as he referenced, SCAN:

Published in Nature in May 2023, the Somato-Cognitive Action Network (SCAN) is a groundbreaking discovery that maps how the human brain integrates abstract thought, physiological processes (like heart rate and breathing), and intentional movement.

The Bridge Between Mind and Body: SCAN connects the prefrontal cortex (areas responsible for planning and goal-directed decisions) directly to the effector regions of the motor cortex that control our limbs and face.

Disrupting the "Homunculus": For nearly a century, scientists believed the motor cortex was laid out as a simple, continuous map of the body. The 2023 research proved that effector-specific regions (feet, hands, mouths) are actually interrupted by specialized, non-effector "inter-effector" nodes that make up SCAN.

Integrated Action: SCAN coordinates everything required for voluntary movement, including focusing attention, creating motivation, and preparing the body's physiological state (e.g., increasing muscle tension or arousal) before an action occurs.

Recent neurological research has shown that SCAN is central to understanding movement disorders, with studies demonstrating that functional abnormalities in this network are the root cause of Parkinson's disease.

Functional MRI studies across ages show that the classic homunculus of the motor cortex in humans is in fact discontinuous, alternating with action control-linked regions termed the somato-cognitive action network.

Scotland was again host to the IYUK Convention for 2026.

Nearly 300 yogis gathered in Glasgow over the holiday weekend to learn some of the finer and more sublte ways to work with intelligence and conciousness so eloquently directed by Birjoo Mehta from Mumbai. ...and it was still exhausting!

THE WELL TRAVELLED CAKE

I like to make a sweet treat for all the dedicated yogis that come on retreat with me.

This year was no exception. Carrot cake that was gluten free and dairy free (minus the icing!!)

My big suitcase was full of ropes and planks as well as the usual yoga kit. My rucksack had the precious notes, swimming stuff, yoga kit etc AND the precious cake was carried in this box by hand.

So far so good, it caught the Calmac ferry, it caught the bus to Lamlash but it got forgotten and went on a tour of the island!!

Up to Blackwaterfoot it went, round the north end and back to the bus station, apparently it’s free for cakes. Back in Brodick the nice man on the end of the phone transferred it onto the Lamlash bus.

The lady driver delivered it into my hands and everyone on the wee ferry cheered when it made it just in time for the crossing.
