Do you know that feeling where everything just feels too much? 🤍

You're snappy for no real reason. Your chest feels tight before the day's even begun. Your thoughts won't slow down. And you can't remember the last time you felt truly okay in your body.

Or maybe it's the other version. Where you go completely flat. Scrolling without really seeing. Nodding along in conversations you're not present for. Carrying a quiet guilt that you can't show up the way you want to.

Both are your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do. Protecting you.

The problem is, when it gets stuck there, it doesn't care about your to do list or the people who need you. What it needs is a signal. Not a pep talk. Not willpower. Something that lands gently in the body and whispers… you can come down now. You are safe.

Here are five things I reach for as a Hypnotherapist and Healer when I feel myself tipping:

Notice what you can see. A picture, a tree, the colour of the sky. Orienting to something real tells your nervous system the environment is safe.

Slow your exhale, longer than your inhale. This activates your vagus nerve and eases you out of defence mode.

Smell something slowly and really notice it.

Put both feet flat on the floor. Feel the ground beneath you. Solid. Steady. You are here.

Hum or sing gently. Sound vibrates through your vagus nerve. You can't hum and stay dysregulated at once.

And place your hand on your heart and breathe. Warmth. Pressure. Presence. Your nervous system reads touch as safety.

Your window of regulation is still there. 🌿 Sometimes you simply need something gentle to help you find your way back.

Did you know that birds only sing when they feel safe? 🤍

No predators nearby.
No threat in the environment.
Just peace.

And when you step outside and hear that gentle birdsong drifting through the trees… something quietly shifts inside you too.

Your nervous system receives the message before your conscious mind even registers it.

Safety.

You naturally orient toward the sound. Not with alarm or urgency. But with curiosity. With softness. With presence.

That is the difference between a sound that dysregulates you and one that brings you home to yourself.

A sudden loud noise sends your body into defence.
But birdsong does something entirely different.
It gently draws you out of your own head and into the present moment.

And for so many of us who carry anxiety, hypervigilance and chronic stress in our bodies… that simple shift is profound.

This is why sound is such a powerful force in nervous system healing.
It is also why overstimulation through noise and chaos so easily unravels us.

That sensitivity is not something to fix.
It is your body doing exactly what it should.

Nature has always known how to heal us.
We simply need to give ourselves permission to receive it.

7 behaviours that feel completely normal… but are actually signs your nervous system is ringing loudly to you for help. 🤍

1. You feel more comfortable when you are busy than when you are still

Rest makes you restless. Stillness feels almost unsafe. So you keep moving. Not because you want to but because your body genuinely does not know what else to do.

2. You snap at the people you love and immediately feel ashamed

It is not really about anger. It is about a system running on empty. When you are completely maxed out even the smallest request can feel like a threat.

3. You cannot answer the question "what do you actually want?"

You have spent so long focused on what others need, what is expected, what is right… that you lost the thread back to yourself.

4. Simple decisions feel impossibly heavy

It is not that you are indecisive. It is that your nervous system is treating every choice as if everything depends on it.
