We are clear that the needs of the patient and citizen are central to the ways in which we deliver our services and support you. Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is responsible for delivering and securing NHS health care services for more than 639,000 people living in the areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. We are currently experiencing exceptional demand across our hospitals due to a combination of increased emergency attendances of sick patients with heat-related symptoms, being unable to safely care for patients in some areas of our hospitals that are not air-conditioned, and the high number of patients who are awaiting discharge, along with staffing difficulties due to school closures over the coming days.

As seen across other areas of Wales, we ask for your support by only attending our Emergency Department if it is life threatening, or you have a very serious injury.

Anyone can become unwell in hot weather, but older people, babies, young children, those who live alone or in a care home are particularly vulnerable in the heat. We would urge our communities to stay as safe as possible and look after each other during this period of extreme heat by keeping hydrated, seeking shade and avoiding overheating wherever possible.

If you need medical help, please think carefully about the services you choose. Choosing the right place to receive advice and care will help us ensure that our hospitals are not overwhelmed and enable us to provide timely treatment for patients most in need.

Please consider visiting your local pharmacy, your GP, visit https://orlo.uk/UGJMP or call NHS 111 for advice. You can also ring 111 if you need to access urgent appointments when your own GP surgery is closed.

You can also find the details of alternative services by visiting our online Gwent Health Guide: Gwent Health Guide - Aneurin Bevan University Health Board

Thank you for your ongoing support in these challenging times for our NHS. We will keep you updated over the coming days.

In this hot weather, please take care of yourself and others. Most of us can enjoy the hot weather safely, but please look out for those who are more vulnerable during the heatwave.

The main risks posed by a heatwave are:
• not drinking enough water (dehydration)
• overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
• heat exhaustion and heatstroke
• sunburn

A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people are older people (especially those over 75) and young children. Please think about:
• those who live on their own or in a care home
• people who have a serious or long term illness – including heart or lung conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson's disease or some mental health conditions
• those who may find it hard to keep cool – babies and the very young, the bed bound, those with drug or alcohol addictions or with Alzheimer's disease
• people who spend a lot of time outside or in hot places – those who live in a top floor flat, the homeless or those whose jobs are outside

Stay safe. ❤️

“Looking back, I realise how much I worried for nothing."

Menna, 27 from Torfaen, was invited for her first cervical screening just before she turned 25, but put it off. “I felt well, had no symptoms or family history, and life got busy, so it didn’t feel urgent.”

Two years later, a friend who’s a nurse spoke to Menna about her own experience and explained how important screening is; “She told me how her mum had abnormal cells picked up through screening, which really stayed with me.”

“I was still nervous. I’d never had an intimate examination before and had built it up in my head as a big ordeal. I worried about being judged and felt anxious about my body looking different.”

“When I finally went for my appointment, the nurse at my GP practice in Pontypool was kind and reassuring. She explained everything clearly and told me that everyone’s cervix looks different. She also explained that cervical screening checks for HPV (human papillomavirus), a very common virus, and helps find changes early.”

“The test was quick, and my results came back within a week. No HPV was found, and everything was normal.”

If you’ve been invited for cervical screening, it’s important to attend. Let your GP practice know if you’re feeling nervous, bring a friend if that helps, and don’t be afraid to ask questions – talking things through can really help.

Happy Father's Day! 💙

Today, we’re celebrating all the amazing dads, grandads, and father figures who give so much to their families and communities.

This week also marks Men’s Health Week - a great reminder for dads everywhere to prioritise their health. Whether it’s booking that overdue check-up, getting active, or simply taking time to recharge, looking after your health helps you keep showing up for the people who matter most.

Let’s make this Father’s Day not just about thanks and appreciation, but also about encouragement - to live well, stay well, and be well.
