Prevent Foot Pain Before It Starts: The Simple Shoe Fit Check 👟🦶

Did you know most corns are caused simply by hidden pressure and friction from our everyday shoes? When shoes press continuously against your toes, your skin protects itself by building up thick layers of hard skin.

Here is a quick 3-step check to make sure your shoes are looking after your feet:
Check while standing: Feet expand under body weight, so always check your fit while standing up.

The thumb rule: Aim for a full thumb's width between your longest toe and the end of your shoe.

Give your toes room: A narrow toe box pinches toes together, causing painful friction spots between them or over the joints.

💡 Quick Safety Tip: If a tender spot is starting to form, avoid medicated corn plasters—the acid in them can damage the healthy skin around the corn! Instead, opt for a non-medicated protective pad and moisturise daily with a urea-based cream to keep skin soft.

If foot pain is holding you back, professional care can safely clear corns and keep you stepping comfortably

🌊 Why Filing with Moisture Works

Softer Skin Surface: Soaking or applying a drop of oil/lotion softens rigid calluses, making them easier to file down with less friction and effort.

Less Dust: Filing dry skin creates fine keratin dust. Adding moisture or filing in the shower keeps everything neat and dust-free.
Gentler on Sensitive Feet: For thinner skin or areas prone to cracking, gentle damp filing with a fine-grit stone can feel much smoother and less harsh than dry friction.

🛠️ How to Do It Right

If you prefer using moisture, keeping these two tips in mind keeps skin safe:
Don't over-soak: Limit foot soaks to 5–10 minutes. Skin that becomes too saturated or "wrinkly" expands and tears easily, making it tricky to tell where dead skin stops and healthy skin begins.

Use the right tool: A traditional pumice stone or a smooth foot file works best on damp skin. Avoid sharp rasp-style "cheese grater" tools on wet skin, as they can pull and snag soft tissue.

Lock it in after: Always follow up with a thick moisturiser (like one with urea) immediately after patting dry to hold onto all that hydration!

Tip of the Week: Footwear Check

When was the last time you checked the inside of your everyday shoes? Over time, inner linings can wear down, seams can burst, and insoles can lose their cushioning leading to hidden pressure points, friction, and avoidable blisters or calluses.

Quick Weekly Action:

Run your hand along the inside of your shoes before putting them on to feel for worn spots, rough seams, or trapped debris.

Remove loose insoles and air them out overnight to reduce moisture build-up and keep bacteria at bay.

Replace worn-out insoles or shoes once the cushioning no longer springs back.
Small checks keep your feet comfortable, protected, and pain-free all week long!

🦶 Tip of the Week: Thinking of Going Barefoot? Read This First!

"Grass is forgiving. Concrete is not!"

With barefoot trends back in the spotlight, it’s easy to think shedding your shoes is the key to natural foot health. While walking barefoot on sand or soil can strengthen intrinsic foot muscles, modern hard surfaces demand real support and protection.

3 Rules for Healthy Feet This Season:

Mind the Surface: Save barefoot walking for soft, natural environments like beach sand or lush grass. Concrete and hardwood floors offer zero shock absorption.

Watch for Warning Signs: Sharp heel pain in the morning, arch fatigue, or tight calves are signs your feet are crying out for proper arch support—not less of it!

Transition Wisely: Jumping straight into minimalist shoes or barefoot living after years in supportive footwear is a fast track to strain and injury.

The Bottom Line: Your feet are your foundation... give them the custom care and structure they need to keep you moving comfortably!

TIP OF THE WEEK: The "Toe-Gap" Dry:

After every shower, bath, or swim, make sure you completely and thoroughly dry the skin between your toes before putting on socks or shoes. Use tissue instead of a towel!!

Why the Swap Matters

• The Thickness Trap: Thick bath towels are too bulky for the tight gaps between toes. Instead of drying the skin, they just mash the toes together, trapping moisture inside.

• The Hygiene Edge: Using a fresh tissue for each foot and binning it immediately ensures any potential fungal spores or bacteria are disposed of, rather than being left on a damp towel hanging in your bathroom.

How to Use It Right

1. Dab, Don't Scrub: Because toilet tissue is thin and highly absorbent, you don't need to rub. Simply wrap a square around your finger and gently dab each toe gap.

2. Moisture Check: The paper will instantly wick away hidden moisture. If the paper tears or feels damp, grab a fresh square and repeat until it stays completely dry.

3. The "Air Time" Rule: After using the tissue, give your feet a minute or two of "air time" before putting on socks. This ensures any final micro-moisture evaporates completely.

Quick Rule of Thumb: If the tissue paper dampens or tears when you press it into the gap, your feet aren't dry enough for socks yet!

🪞 TIP OF THE WEEK: The 30-Second Mirror Test 🪞

When was the last time you actually looked at the bottoms of your feet?

Because we stand on them all day, it’s incredibly easy to miss the early warning signs of a foot problem until it starts to hurt. But for many people—especially those with limited mobility or conditions like diabetes—catching a small issue early is vital.
If you struggle to bend down or see the soles of your feet, here is a brilliant 30-second trick:

The Mirror Test.
Place a hand mirror or a small freestanding mirror securely on the floor.
Hold your foot over it, or sit comfortably in a chair and lift your foot above the glass.
Tilt the mirror until you can clearly see the reflection of your entire sole and the tips of your toes.

What are you looking for?
Early signs of friction or pressure (like redness or hard skin callus building up).
Tiny breaks in the skin, hidden blisters, or splinters.
Any changes in skin color or unexpected bruising.

Taking just half a minute once a week to check the reflections can catch a tiny blister before it turns into a painful wound or ulcer. Prevention is always better than cure!
