The Summer Solstice is often spoken about as a celebration of light.
But I’ve been wondering whether its real gift is illumination.
Not the kind that arrives as certainty. The kind that reveals. The kind that shines into the corners of a life and says “look!”.
Look how far you’ve come.
Look at what you’ve survived.
Look at what has softened.
Look at how you’ve grown.
This year has reminded me that a human heart is far more spacious than we give it credit for.
It can hold grief and joy at the same time.
Longing and contentment.
Heartbreak and expansion.
Exhaustion and wonder.
We often imagine life moving neatly from darkness into light, from challenge into ease.
Nature tells a different story.
The rose blooms beside the thorn.
The caterpillar completely dissolves itself to transform into the butterfly.
The brightest day of the year also marks the moment the light begins its slow return towards darkness.
Nothing is separate. It all belongs side by side.
Perhaps these life lessons are learning how to welcome in all the experiences...To let joy and grief break your heart wide open... To allow yourself to be fully touched by this fragile and fleeting experience of being alive.
Today, as the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, I am thinking about acceptance. Not pretending all is well, not giving up... Simply surrendering to what was, and choosing to see the beauty anyway.
The Solstice asks nothing of us. It does not ask us for huge intentions. It does not ask us to transform or to become more. It only reminds us to stand in the light for a moment and witness. Witness the life that has shaped you... The losses that have carved new, unexpected, exciting and equally terrifying paths... And each time I think I can’t get through this... There is always so much love that remains.
Witness the courage it took to keep going. Witness the person you are today. The light illuminates all of it. Not only the beautiful parts. All of it.
And somehow, when everything is welcomed to the table, there is a profound kind of freedom... That we were never here to be one thing... We were here to be whole and true ❤️🔥.
Happy Solstice 🌞🌼🧡
