What are emotional triggers?

Emotional triggers (or mental health/psychological triggers) are environmental, interpersonal, sensory or cognitive situations that spark sudden, intense negative reactions. These triggers are deeply personal and vary from one person to the next, but they can be as subtle as the smell of a specific perfume or as direct as someone criticizing you for the way you look or act.

“Emotional triggers cause you to experience thoughts and feelings that are often disproportional to the actual event that’s taking place,” explains Dr. Albers. “It’s like a knee-jerk reaction that you’re having, and it’s often as a result of past trauma, pain or a stressful situation.”

Some examples of emotional triggers include:
· A car backfiring might cause a spike of anxiety because it reminds you of a past accident or gunshot experience.
· A romantic partner raising their voice in an argument might trigger intense anger similar to what you may have experienced when your parents yelled at you as a child.
· Repetitive news coverage of traumatic events might cause sudden, intense sadness or grief if it reminds you of a time you were sad or you feel particularly tied to those present-day events.
· High-stress situations that may trigger feelings of self-doubt or shame, inspiring you to people-please as a way to de-escalate the situation, make everyone else happy and increase the safety of your environment.

In a lot of ways, your emotional triggers are often directly related to the needs of your inner child and unprocessed feelings, thoughts or emotions you’ve experienced in the past.
Once you understand what triggers you, it is important to understand why and how as well as methods you can implement to have more of a handle over them.

Managing Triggers

Understanding and identifying your triggers, is important for emotional regulation and mental health. Keeping a trigger journal can help you to track your emotional responses to various situations, allowing you to develop strategies to manage or to avoid those triggers effectively.

Recognising your triggers can also help with therapeutic approaches, by helping you to work through unresolved issues related to past traumas.

Triggers play a significant role in your emotional and psychological responses, often serving as reminders of past experiences. By understanding and managing your triggers can help to improve your emotional well-being and coping strategies

What are triggers.?

Triggers are events or situations which provoke an emotional reaction or certain behaviours. They often relate to past experiences or traumas. They can also range in severity from person to person.
Triggers can be from the environment, interpersonal, sensory or even cognitive.

Emotional triggers: these are situations that trigger emotions such as anger, sadness or anxiety. For example a smell may trigger a past trauma which leads to a raise in anxiety.

Phycological trigger; these triggers can lead to a person reverting to feelings or thoughts of past traumas. These can manifest as knee jerk reactions to current events which remind them of past distressing times.

Behavioural triggers: These triggers can lead to behaviours such as; impulsive actions or compulsive responses, often as a way to cope with emotional distress caused by the trigger.

Environmental Triggers: A loud noise may trigger anxiety in someone who has experienced trauma related to violence or accidents.

Interpersonal Triggers: A partner raising their voice during an argument may evoke feelings of fear or anger, reminiscent of childhood experiences.

Sensory Triggers: Certain smells or sounds can evoke strong memories and emotional responses, such as nostalgia or discomfort.

What Are Psychological Triggers?

A Psychological trigger is any stimulus that creates a specific emotional or behavioural reaction, often bypassing conscious thought and activating an immediate response, which is based on past experiences.

Triggers can be external, such as sights sounds, smells or situations. Or internal, coming from thoughts, memories, or physical sensations. They aren't limited to negative experiences; though triggers can also evoke positive emotions such as joy and nostalgia.
