Fun cactus tattoo by ✾ ༶ 𝔏𝔬𝔲𝔦𝔰𝔢 𝔅𝔬𝔱𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔦𝔩𝔩 𝔗𝔞𝔱𝔱𝔬𝔬 ༶ ✾ - last minute booking I was happy to fit in, after his daughter had put a 🌵💕sticker tattoo on him at her birthday party and he quite liked it so joked to everyone that he was going to get a real one. No one believed him but he came and got his first tattoo done secretly yesterday to surprise everyone. 🙂 What an awesome and fun way to remember a happy time 🙂 ☀️

A lack of pyro commissions has given me time to think a bit.

When I started my crafts business back in 2007, there was only ever going to be one name for it... Wood Tattoos. There was a massive similarity in my eyes between the work of a tattoo artist and a pyrographer. We choose tattoos to reflect our likes, our loves and our personality, and the tattoo artists uses their creativity and skill to indelibly decorate our skin as the canvas. That was also how I saw my role as a pyrographer... burning designs on wood with the heat of the nib as my 'ink', to create meaningful art that would be treasured by the owner forever.

Last summer, I got my latest tattoo... this fantastic design by Louise Botterill, Tattoo Artist of Black Dragon Tattoo Studio in Newton Abbot, Devon. I presented her with some ideas for the sort of mandala design I wanted, and explained the personal significance of various elements to her... the dragonfly for my wife, the bee for my daughter and the oak leaves that they rest on to represent myself. She used her own artistry and skill to combine these separate parts into a design that means the world to me.

When people come to me for a pyrography design, I work closely with them to create a design that fits the loose ideas floating around in their head and turn it into something real that they will love. This can mean hours and hours of communicating back and forward, tweaking individual sections to make them as perfect as possible. The feedback that I get when the customer receives the item and sees it physically for the first time shows why all of that effort and dedication is worthwhile.

You don't get that amount of talent, passion and artistry by typing some ideas into AI... what you are paying for may feel expensive initially but you are investing in the experience of an artist or craftsperson that had built their skills up over a lifetime.

Take your time and research the artist that can make your dreams a reality.

If you want a special gift for a special person in your life... support an independent artist. Support a real person. Every penny that you spend with them will be truly appreciated and will buy you something magical that would not have existed without the meeting of two individual minds.

Buy something unique.

Buy local.

Buy handmade.

Go get a tattoo... or a Wood Tattoo for that matter.
