A small shift in language can make communication feel a lot less pressured. 💛

For someone with selective mutism, repeated questions can sometimes make it harder to respond. Try replacing some questions with simple, supportive comments that keep the interaction going without requiring an immediate answer.

Creating more space and less pressure can help communication feel safer over time.

Feature Friday: Meet Cove Therapies – Cullercoats

Helping children find their voice.

Based in Cullercoats, Cove Therapies is an independent paediatric speech and language therapy clinic supporting pre-school and primary-aged children and their families, with a growing focus on neurodivergent children.

After more than 15 years working in the NHS, the impact of Covid gave the founder, Lisa Slater the opportunity and ultimately the confidence to take the leap into independent practice.

Building the business hasn’t always been easy. Alongside growing Cove Therapies, she has navigated significant family responsibilities, including becoming her Mum’s sole carer and home-educating her son.

Through it all, her focus has remained the same: providing high-quality, individualised support in a warm, welcoming environment.

For Cove Therapies, strong relationships, transparency and trust are at the heart of the work.

The most rewarding part? Seeing children make incredible progress, from using no spoken words to becoming confident chatterboxes. 💙

Her advice to anyone starting their own business?

“Go slower.”

🎃💚 HELP US MAKE HALLOWEEN EXTRA SPECIAL! 💚🎃

This Halloween, Jamesie’s Mission would love to give three families a fun-filled day out at Brockbushes Pumpkin Picking Experience. 🦖🎃

We’re looking for families who may be going through an incredibly difficult time — whether they’re experiencing financial hardship while their child is receiving ongoing hospital care, or they have recently experienced the loss of a loved one, leaving siblings who could really use something special to look forward to. 💚

Each family will receive:
🎃 A family pass to the Pumpkin Picking Experience
🍬 A £50 voucher to enjoy food or sweet treats in the café
👻 A Halloween Boo Basket filled with treats

💌 NOMINATE A FAMILY
If there’s a family you think would really benefit from this, you can nominate them by tagging them in the comments, sending us a private message on Facebook, or emailing us at: [email protected]

Please make sure you can provide us with contact details for the family, as we’ll need to contact them directly if they’re selected and a little bit about why you’re nominating them. You’re also very welcome to nominate your own family. 💚

We’ll be choosing the three families at the beginning of October, so there’s plenty of time to share this post, have a think about someone who may need a little lift, and get your nominations to us.

Sometimes a day out is more than just a day out. It’s something to look forward to, a chance to make memories together and, for a little while, simply have some fun. 🥹💚

Please share far and wide so we can reach the families who might need this most.

🎃 3 families. One spooky day out. Lots of memories to be made. 👻💚

For anyone needing a bit of support starting high school

Starting secondary school can be a time of uncertainty. It’s normal for children to go from feeling happy and confident one minute, to feeling nervous or anxious the next.

As a parent or carer, here are just a few things you may be able to do to help your child to find their feet during this transition.

Here are just a few things to remember when supporting your child:

🩷 Exploring

Encourage your child to explore their thoughts and feelings. Let them know they can talk openly about their feelings, both positive and negative.

"What are you looking forward to?"

"Are you worried about anything?"

🩷 Empowering your child

Building your child’s independence and confidence will help them with the transition.

Give your child lots of praise when you notice things they're doing well. The greatest source of strength for any child going through change is knowing that they can fall back on the love and support of their loved ones.

🩷 You don't have to have all the answers

Find out what the school is doing to support the transition to secondary.

Ask if there is school counselling if your child is struggling, or other support in your area.

And be there for yourself, too. There are more resources for parents and carers on our Mentally Healthy Schools website.

What do you think can be helpful from parents - or any trusted adults?

👏🏼 Great to see Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice flying the flag for independent speech & language therapists 👏🏼

We’re in The Guardian today 👀

ASLTIP is featured in The Guardian’s special Families supplement, helping more people find trusted independent Speech and Language Therapists across the UK.

This kind of national visibility matters. It helps raise awareness of independent practice, promotes the value of finding an experienced therapist directly, and supports more families to discover the ASLTIP directory.

A lovely moment to see ASLTIP out there, representing our members and the independent profession.
