Happy June 1st everyone.

Bank holiday weekends mean different things to different people.

For some, it’s time to rest. For others, it’s time to enjoy the outdoors, feel supported, try something fun, and make memories in a safe and caring environment.

At Oakwoods Care Group, our support does not stop because it’s a weekend or a holiday. From residential respite to day services, we create opportunities for the people we support to enjoy meaningful experiences, build confidence, and feel included in everyday life.

Sometimes care is found in the smallest moments: encouragement, laughter, reassurance, fresh air, and simply being present.

A huge thank you to our team for continuing to show compassion, patience, and dedication every day.

Recovery takes time.
Meltdowns are not bad behaviour — they are signs of distress.

For autistic people and people with complex needs, recovery does not happen the moment the noise stops. They may need space, reduced demands, calm support, and time to feel safe again.

The role of care staff is not to control the moment, but to understand it, reduce the pressure, and protect the person’s dignity while they recover.

At Oakwoods Care Group, we believe compassionate support begins with recognising distress before it becomes crisis.

We believe every space can become an opportunity for joy, regulation and connection.

Today, our reception was transformed into a fun sensory playground — creating a space where movement, laughter and sensory exploration can come together in the best way.

And of course… even Louisa couldn’t resist having a swing. 💚

In PMVA training, one of the most important lessons is knowing when not to use force.

In this scenario, a resident did not feel ready to leave his room. There was no immediate risk of harm, so staff made the right decision: they gave him time, space, reassurance, and the opportunity to process the request.

Legally, restraint must only be used when it is necessary, proportionate, and the least restrictive option to prevent harm. It should never be used simply to gain compliance.

Ethically, this approach protects dignity, autonomy, trust, and emotional safety. For autistic and disabled people, processing time is not refusal or “challenging behaviour”; it can be a necessary part of feeling safe and understood.

The staff response showed calm, respect, and good practice.

No immediate risk = no force.
Support, wait, reassess.

Autistic traits don’t always look like the stereotypes.

Sometimes they look like over-preparing, needing quiet time after social events, copying others to fit in, deep focus, perfectionism, sensory sensitivity, or burnout that others mistake for laziness.

Many autistic people go unseen because they’ve learned to mask, adapt, and push through environments that were not built with them in mind.

Recognition matters. Understanding matters. Inclusion starts when we stop expecting autism to look only one way.

Save this as a reminder. Share it to help someone feel seen.

Our team recently came together for an impactful Violence Prevention Training Day focused on strengthening awareness, communication, safety, and support within our workplace and community.

Through open discussions, collaborative learning, and shared experiences, staff members engaged in meaningful conversations about prevention strategies, conflict resolution, and creating safer environments for everyone.

This training reflects our ongoing commitment to professional development, teamwork, and fostering a culture built on respect, empathy, and accountability. We are proud of our staff for their participation, dedication, and willingness to continue learning together.

Together, we grow stronger, safer, and more connected.
