September is World Alzheimer’s Month 💚

A time to raise awareness, encourage understanding, and remind ourselves that small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

When we take the time to listen, be patient and show compassion, we can help people living with dementia feel supported, valued and understood.

Together, let’s create a more dementia-friendly world one small action at a time. 🌿

September always feels like a fresh start. A new school year, new routines, new beginnings and, hopefully, new opportunities to connect with the people around us.

I recently heard a question: “If you could have one superpower, what would it be?”

It made me think.

Not the ability to fly. Not unlimited money. Not anything material.

I think I would choose patience.

The patience to really listen to another person, even when their view is different from mine. To try to understand before reacting. To forgive. To give someone another chance.

We often think of strength as being able to fix things. But sometimes there is enormous strength in simply being present — listening without rushing, showing kindness and giving someone the time they need.

Perhaps that really is a kind of superpower.

It is something I think about a lot in my work within the community, particularly when talking about dementia. Communication may change, situations can become challenging, and there isn’t always a quick solution. But patience, understanding and compassion can completely change how that moment feels for another person.

This September, I’ll continue delivering free Dementia Awareness sessions for local community groups and organisations across Northampton. The sessions are friendly, practical and designed to help people feel more confident in understanding and supporting someone living with dementia.

And as children across our community begin another school year, I’d also like to wish them — and all the parents, grandparents, teachers and carers supporting them — a happy and positive start to September.

Maybe we don’t need extraordinary powers to make a difference. Sometimes listening, understanding and being a little more patient is enough. 💚

🌿 Please meet Emma B!

Emma’s journey into care was inspired by someone very special — her great-aunt Vivian, who was a nurse. Seeing her compassion and dedication to others helped shape Emma’s own path into care.

Emma started working in care at just 15 years old, later working in hospitals and becoming a Practice Nurse before joining Home Instead Northampton in 2019 as a Care Professional. Since then, her journey has taken her into her current role as our Training & Compliance Manager.

Today, Emma plays a huge part in supporting and developing our Care Professionals. She delivers training, carries out competency support and, as our Dementia Champion, shares her passion and knowledge to help our team provide truly person-centred dementia care.

From the example set by Aunt Vivian to inspiring the next generation of Care Professionals — Emma’s story shows how one person’s compassion can have a lasting ripple effect. 💚

This is Emma’s journey into care. And it all started with inspiration.

Our very own Home Instead models! 📸😄

Yesterday, some of our wonderful Care Professionals came together for one of our regular Care Professional meet-ups – time to catch up, share experiences, support one another and enjoy being together as a team.

And what a team! 💚

Our Care Professionals are at the heart of what we do. They bring experience, kindness, reliability and, most importantly, genuine care to the people and families they support every day.

Also pictured are our Senior Care Professionals, Sarah and Anna, who play an important role in supporting and encouraging our wider Care Professional team.

These regular meet-ups are about more than just coffee and conversation. They help keep our team connected, give everyone an opportunity to share what's happening out in the community and remind us that great care starts with a strong, supported team.

Different personalities, different experiences, one Dream Team. 💚

Although judging by this photo, we may have also found the models for our next Home Instead campaign! 😄📸

Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining the Forget-Me-Nots Social Group at The Priory – and somehow, two hours disappeared in what felt like minutes.

I met so many wonderful people, each with their own story, experiences and perspective to share. There was conversation, laughter, support and, most importantly, a real sense of belonging.

The Forget-Me-Nots have been bringing people together for 13 years, creating a welcoming and non-judgemental space for people living with dementia, their partners, carers and families.

Groups like this are so important. Dementia awareness isn't simply about understanding a diagnosis. It's about understanding the person behind it, challenging misconceptions, reducing isolation and making sure people affected by dementia remain connected and valued within their communities.

That is something very close to our ethos at Home Instead Northampton. We believe that living with dementia should never mean losing your identity, independence or place within the community. Through education, awareness and strong community connections, we can all play a part in making Northamptonshire more dementia-friendly.

A huge thank you to Professor Jaqueline Parkes and the Forget-Me-Nots team for such a warm welcome. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and I'm already looking forward to the next one!

📅 Next Forget-Me-Nots meeting:
Tuesday 29th September | 5pm–7pm
📍 Overstone Manor, Ecton Lane, Sywell, Northampton, NN6 0BB

New members are welcome, whether you are living with dementia yourself or attending as a partner, carer or family member. 💚
