Early labour? Don’t overthink it.

Seriously, one of the best things you can do is ignore it for as long as possible.

The more you analyse, time, and obsess over every little twinge, the more you’re up in your thinking brain and out of your body. And that can slow things right down.

Go for a walk. Have a nap. Eat something nice. Watch crap telly. Whatever helps you relax and not focus on every little sensation.

And yes, obviously if timing contractions feels helpful for you, do it. For some people there are specific circumstances where monitoring things more closely might feel important or be recommended. This isn’t a hard rule.

We just see so many people get stuck in “is this labour?!” mode for hours and hours, staring at contraction timer apps instead of letting their body crack on with the job.

Trust your body. Tune in later. You’ll know when it’s time.

Want birth prep that actually helps? Our online hypnobirthing course is here for you. Link’s in the bio.

Labour slowed down or feeling a bit stuck
The Miles Circuit is the first thing we recommend. Every time.
It helps baby wiggle into a better position and gives your body the space it needs to get things moving again.
You don’t have to do it perfectly and you don’t have to do all three steps in one go.
Just start.
And check the official Miles Circuit website if you want the full breakdown.
We love biomechanics for birth and it works brilliantly along hypnobirthing.

thebirthuprising Vaginal exams during labour are often treated like a standard step but there’s nothing “standard” about putting hands inside your body without a clear reason.

They can be helpful in some situations.
But routine ones? Without explanation? Without consent?
That’s a no from us.

You deserve to know your options and make the call.

That white creamy stuff all over a newborn baby?

📸 by the amazing

That’s called vernix, and it really is amazing.

Vernix is a protective coating made during pregnancy that helps protect your baby’s skin while they’re in the womb. It helps with temperature regulation after birth, keeps their skin moisturised, and contains antimicrobial properties that help protect against infection. It’s also thought to support the development of your baby’s microbiome.

Some babies are born absolutely covered in vernix, while others have barely any at all. Both are completely normal. Babies born earlier often tend to have more of it, while babies born later may have less because it’s already started absorbing into the skin before birth.

A lot of vernix gets wiped away straight after birth because people think it looks messy or dirty, but leaving it to absorb naturally into your baby’s skin can actually have loads of benefits.

When you’re upright or moving, you’re working with your body.

Gravity helps your baby move down.
Your pelvis has more space to open.
Your baby can rotate more easily into a position that works for birth.
When you’re on your back, all of that can become harder.

Your sacrum can’t move as freely.
The weight of your baby is distributed differently.
And your body is working against gravity instead of with it.

This is why things like:

* leaning forward
* being on all fours
* using a birth ball
* standing, swaying, lunging
* getting in the shower or bath

can make a difference.

Not because they’re magic positions.
Just because they give your body space to do what it’s already trying to do.

You might have heard of Spinning Babies. Their whole approach is based on how positioning and movement can help your baby get into a more optimal position for birth.

It’s not about forcing anything.
It’s about creating the conditions for things to work more easily.

And then there’s intuitive movement.

This is the bit people don’t talk about enough.
In labour, your body will often guide you.
You might feel like you want to move, sway, lean, shift position.

That’s not random.
That’s your body responding to what’s happening and helping your baby move.
And if your body tells you to lie on your back at some point?
That’s fine. Listen to it.

This isn’t about banning any position.
It’s about not being put on your back just because it’s routine or convenient.

A lot of people end up on their backs because:

* it’s standard practice
* it’s easier for monitoring
* or no one’s told them they’ve got other options

You don’t need to memorise loads of positions.
You just need to know you’re allowed to move.

That alone can change a lot.

You don’t need to wait until labour to start using this.

These mats are for pregnancy too.
Resting. Stretching. Getting into positions that actually feel good on your body instead of fighting it.

Alix is using it here for upright and forward-leaning positions because they support baby’s positioning, take pressure off your back, and give your body space to do its thing.

But also... sometimes you just want to lie down without feeling like your hips are being personally attacked by the floor.

These are super practical.
Grippy. Comfortable. Easy to move around. Something you’ll actually use, not shove in a cupboard.

And full transparency... we’ve got a lot of them to shift before we move office and we really can’t be arsed to pack them all up

So they’re currently £20.50 with free shipping.

If you’ve been thinking about one, now’s a good time to grab it.

Use it in pregnancy.
Use it in labour.
Use it postpartum when you’re sat on the floor wondering how your life got this chaotic.
Sit baby on it to play and a toddler on it to nap.

They’re simple. They work. And they make a difference.

You’ll also get a FREE Movement for Pregnancy and Birth course alongside it.

This is a picture of Jade’s placenta that she grew during her pregnancy with River.

And yeah, it was huge. The lovely and .doula can attest to that.

But beyond the size, placentas are doing some serious work.

Your body grows this entire organ from scratch in pregnancy.

It:

* transfers oxygen and nutrients
* removes waste
* produces hormones that keep pregnancy going
* supports your baby’s immune system

And then after your baby is born, you still have the placenta to birth. That’s the third stage of labour, and it’s something a lot of people aren’t properly told about.

There are a few different ways this can happen.

Physiological third stage means you wait for your body to birth the placenta on its own. No routine drugs, just letting your body do its thing. It can take a bit longer than may be wanted by others, but that doesn’t automatically mean soemthing isn’t right.

Active management is where you’re given an injection to help your uterus contract, and the placenta is delivered with support from your care provider. This is often quicker, and it’s what’s routinely offered in hospital.

But routine doesn’t automatically mean necessary.

If you’ve had a straightforward birth and you and your baby are well, it doesn’t mean you have to have active management just because it’s the standard approach. Routine care and normal physiology aren’t always the same thing.

Then there’s a middle ground. You can start off waiting for a physiological third stage, and if things aren’t progressing or you change your mind, you can move to active management.

None of these options are automatically better than the others.

What matters is that you actually know they exist, and that you get to make a decision based on what feels right for you and your situation.

It’s a comb. That’s it.

And yet… it works.

Birth combs use gate control theory, which is just a fancy way of saying your brain can only focus on so much sensation at once. When you squeeze the comb into your hand during a contraction, it gives your brain something else to process. For a lot of people, that takes the edge off the intensity.

They’re simple, portable, and you can use them literally anywhere. At home in early labour, in the car, in hospital corridors, sat waiting for a room, waiting for a pool to fill, waiting for anything. You don’t need the perfect setup to cope with contractions. You can still do something.

We’ve sold thousands of these and the feedback is always the same. People don’t expect much from something so small, and then end up using it constantly.

They’re £5. No big investment, no complicated technique. Just something practical you can have in your hand when things start to ramp up.
