⚡️ Electroacupuncture for Overactive Bladder?

There’s growing evidence that this modern take on an ancient technique may help reduce symptoms like urgency, frequency, and incontinence.
By stimulating key acupuncture points with targeted electrical pulses, electroacupuncture may help regulate bladder function through the nervous system — offering relief without the side effects associated with pharmaceutical treatments.

🎉 This weekend's Notting Hill Carnival is a joyful celebration, yet it has much in common with the peaceful practice of acupuncture — each is deeply rooted in time-honoured tradition, but continues to evolve and thrive within contemporary life.

They share a dramatic duality: they’re at once historical and progressive. Whether it’s needles for neuromodulation or sequins stitched to reflect identity, both practices enhance modern life — preserving ritual while embracing innovation.

At BMAS, we honour this beautiful balance in every needle we place.
🌍 Celebrating culture. Celebrating healing.

🐱 The cat's whiskers

It’s International Cat Day and looking like the cat's whiskers makes you the best of the best. Or perhaps it means you're having acupuncture treatment to treat hay fever or facial pain. Acupuncture: elegant, precise, and sometimes... accidentally cat-like.

Want to be the cat that got the cream?

"Acupuncture in Medicine" is at the sharp end when it comes to publishing research into medical acupuncture.

The most-read paper in the journal right now is a randomised controlled trial comparing trigger point (TrP) dry needling, TrP electroacupuncture and motor point electroacupuncture of the trapezius muscle for the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome.

The evidence base continues to grow — and we’re proud to support science-backed practice at the British Medical Acupuncture Society. Our journal is available to all members of the Society, or subscribe now at https://journals.sagepub.com/home/AIM Journals

Psoriasis awareness month

We often consider psoriasis to be a skin condition but joints can be affected in the same way, causing pain and swelling. Acupuncture may relieve psoriatic arthritis symptoms by stimulating peripheral nerves at specific points, triggering a cascade of neurochemical responses. Insertion of the needle activates sensory nerve fibres that project to the spinal cord and brain, leading to the release of endogenous opioids, serotonin, and other neuromodulators that dampen down pain signalling.

We know that acupuncture can modulate the immune system by influencing cytokine profiles— shifting the balance away from pro-inflammatory mediators toward anti-inflammatory factors. So patients can benefit from reduction in both inflammation and pain.

Learn more about acupuncture by visiting the BMAS website, where you can find an acupuncture practitioner, book on a course, read the latest research, and much more. The British Medical Acupuncture Society provides acupuncture training and support to regulated health professionals.
