There is a saying: “two steps forward, three steps back.” Sometimes, shifting the focus can be helpful.
Do you focus on the steps lost, or on the feeling of going backwards? In doing so, it can become easy to forget the progress that has been made. Harsh self-criticism can follow, and we may begin to dismiss what was once going well.
Often, we focus so much on what feels lost that we overlook what has already been gained. But nothing truly goes all the way back to the beginning – it is more often a stumble than a return to zero. We can pause, regain our footing, and continue from where we are.
A setback does not erase the progress that came before it. We never return to the exact same starting point because every experience leaves us with new knowledge, insight, and strength.
Changing this perspective can create space for greater self-compassion, understanding, and grace.
