This bright yellow biofluorescence comes from a mustard lichen (Pyxine sorediata). A lichen with an incredible distribution it can be found lighting up trees in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas.

One final before and after landscape shot to sign off from the Valdivian Rainforests of Chile.

A truly magical place that warrants a lot more exploration, and is very much in need of some serious protection.

Logging and plantations of exotic trees (like pine and eucalyptus) have replaced much of the native forest.

Chile is home to roughly 10% of the world’s bryophyte species, yet many of them remain poorly known or undocumented. It is likely that many species will become extinct before they are even discovered.

At the heart of one of the world's best locations for streetfood lies an ancient rainforest. A UNESCO Biosphere reserve, with an estimated age of 130 million years.

Where else can you feast on delicious streetfood by day, and explore ancient glowing forests at night. The perfect location for writing a book about biofluorescence.

Biofluorescence can help reveal some of the hidden chemistry going on inside plants.

This non fluorescent aloe Vera leaf transforms bright orange when snapped in half. All thanks to a compound called aloin. A chemical that tastes very bitter and acts as a potent laxative.

For anyone wanting to consume aloe Vera gel this could be a handy trick to help make sure you are consuming just the gel, without any aloin along with it.

The Valdivian temperate rainforest was once a part of the vast continent of Gondwana. Something that can be seen in its many biofluorescent similarities with Australia and New Zealand.

If you ever come across them and find a patch that are glowing green you have a chance for a cruel trick. Ask someone to pick one up and watch as their hand slips into a very goey mess of melting mushroom.
